Views of the countryside and plenty of outdoor activities for all ages

Finca Flores Amarillas is 5-acre piece of land in south-west Spain, a beautiful and largely unspoiled area. It is surrounded with fig and olive groves, soft-rolling hills and pasture land, and everywhere you look, you'll want to rest your eyes on the scenery in front of you.

IMPORTANT: It can be rented as a whole (this listing) or on a B&B basis (for prices per room, please, go to Homeaway listing #1934400).

The house is a typically white Mediterranean house, with shaded balconies, terraces and porches, plenty of flowers and pleasant aromatic plants, and local architectural elements. The house is newly-built and has all mod cons, but it also incorporates typical arquitectural elements of Spanish countryside homes and has a rustic feel to it, mixed with some modern features. There are plenty of spaces for outdoor fun.

To an extent, its design is a combination of passive-solar architecture and alternative energy sources. We have our own bore hole to provide us with clean, fresh water and our geothermal installation provides underfloor heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. However, we also enjoy the luxury of being connected to the national grid, so our electricity supply is not dependant on weather.

There are five double en-suite bedrooms, two communal areas and three terraces on the top floor, all offering spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. One of the communal areas doubles as an informal classroom for our residential immersion language courses.

The downstairs has a big, open-plan living room cum dining area that opens onto a porch, and a spacious kitchen.

There are several outdoor areas to relax and have a drink (or a siesta), and we have lots of outdoor games to keep our guests entertained when they are not walking in the sierra, birdwatching, stargazing or otherwise keeping themselves busy.

Travellers visiting in winter can experience a true winter atmosphere. There is an open fireplace in the living room, a wood burner in the kitchen and another one upstairs in the classroom.

About Paul

I am a British expat living in Spain since 2000. My wife Iva and I manage a B&B place in the province of Extremadura, southwest Spain. We have three children aged 8, 6 and 2, a dog and two cats, with plans to have chicken and a couple of donkeys in the near future.

Since moving here from Madrid in 2008 (where Iva and I met), we have abandoned the rat race but also all the good stuff a city has to offer (we do miss some of the things), and basically tried to make our lives simpler and more in sync with nature. We buy locally grown organic produce (fruit and vegetables, meat and free-range chicken and eggs), and we harvest our own olives and figs. We spend most of our free time outdoors. Or cooking.

We enjoy living in the countryside and being a part of a small, closely-knit community. Our nearest village only has 2000 inhabitants and it's a great feeling running into people you know when you are out and about (something that never happened in Madrid).

With three 'free-range' children, most of the nights we can't wait to go to bed, but on those rare nights when we feel we've still got some energy left, we like to sit on the porch, watch the sunset and talk, or stay inside and watch a film or an episode or two of our favourite series of the moment, or simply read a book. And we always enjoy having guests (paying and non-paying) and sharing our rural experience with them.

Now, I know it all sounds very idyllic, and in many ways it is, but with three small children it can get a bit stressful too. Having said that, we have never regretted our decision to abandon a cosmopolitan and multi-cultural Madrid and start a new life on a finca (Spanish for a piece of land, usually cultivated and sometimes with a house on it), and we are sure most people who come here come for the same reason - to briefly get away from it all and enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside.

Why Paul chose Montanchez - Tamuja

Seeing this finca back in 2007 was love at first sight, and although we continued looking, we always came back to it. We decided to buy it while on our honeymoon and have worked on our project ever since. It's been a long journey designing the house, getting all the licences, having it built and furnished, but we have finally made it and never looked back.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Finca Flores Amarillas is a newly-built country home in the heart of Extremadura, Spain. The house and the adjacent 5-acre land lie on the sunny side of the Sierra de Montanchez and boast spectacular views all around.

The house has 5 double rooms with en-suite bathrooms, two sitting rooms and three terraces (two are shaded) on the upper floor, with the living-cum-dining room, the kitchen and shaded outdoor spaces all downstairs.

The house is on the grid for electricity, water supply is our own (borehole) and there is a geothermal installation with underfloor heating/cooling, making it possible to enjoy your stay any time of the year.

There are several play areas scattered around the finca, with plenty of sports equipment to keep everyone busy (table tennis, badminton, petanque, sand pit, trampoline...). The fig and olive trees provide shade and cold refreshments are a welcome companion on a hot summer's day.

When renting a whole house, guests have access to all of the upstairs (5 bedrooms, 2 sitting rooms and 3 terraces) and the downstairs (1 bedroom, a spacious living room and dining room, a kitchen, and all of the outdoor spaces (porch, etc.). Only our small private area is locked away.

We are also a registered B&B with five double en-suite bedrooms. B&B guests, who rent rooms, will have access to all of the upstairs, but are always welcome to join us downstairs.
