About Shirley Cooney
We live in Marin County which is just north of San Francisco. My husband and I are semi-retired. We have 2 grown children and have been blessed with 2 grandsons. We come to Kauai twice a year to relax and do maintenance on the condo.
Shirley Cooney purchased this Condo in 2001
Why Shirley Cooney chose Kapaa
The first time we came to Kauai was in 1971. We toured 4 of the islands and fell in love with the 'Garden Isle'. We had friends who owned a condo at the Pono Kai Resort. We started renting their unit and spending many of our family vacations on Kauai. We always hoped one day to buy a little piece of paradise. In 2001, our wish came true.
What makes this Condo unique
The Pono Kai is centrally located on the east side of the island. This location is great for people who want to explore the island. The resort is conveniently located in the historical town of Kapaa. The condo is in walking distance to many shops and restaurants. The beach and a 5 mile multi-use coastal path is right out front of our condo.
Pono Kai Resort is a non-smoking property

Minimum age of primary renter:21

Great Location, Great Owner
The Pono Kai Resort is an older development having been built in 1975 and is a mixture of timeshare units and others that are privately owned. The grounds have been well maintained over the years.
This particular unit that we enjoyed is owned and managed by Shirley and Tony. It has been renovated and the owners have added their personal touch to the beautiful decorum throughout the suite. We felt as though we were staying at their home while Shirley and Tony were away. Their unit is the best that my wife and I have stayed at in our 20 years of coming to the Pono Kai.
The town of Kapaa is an ideal place to stay as it is a midpoint location between Hanalei to the north and Poipu to the south. And Kapaa itself has so many things to offer visitors from the many quaint shops and restaurants to the beautiful scenery nearby. Beauty that starts with the gorgeous coastal sunrise you can witness every day from the property, the 4 mile coastal trail that is right next to the buildings and the nearby Sleeping Giant and Kuilau Ridge Trails for hikers of all levels.
Thank you Shirley and Tony for the fond memories that you helped create on our most recent trip to paradise.
Better than advertised!
This was a wonderful place to stay, it was clean and had a great view of the ocean. The owner was really nice and was great at communicating and dealing with my phone's snorkeling adventure (not recommended).
Heaven in paradise
We had such a wonderful stay. The sunrises are stunning! Just a short walk to the beach which was pretty secluded every time we went. The condo was fully stocked and well maintained. Lots to do at the resort and just a short walk to the town. Shirley was a wonderful host! She was very good at communicating before and during our trip. We were celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary and we were welcomed with a beautiful bouquet of tropical flowers and a card... nice personal touch! We would love to come back again, hopefully sooner rather than later!
Mahalo for sharing your feedback and rating, we are glad to hear you enjoyed your vacation and we hope to see you again soon. Maybe for your 3rd wedding anniversary.
Great place if we go back to Kauai we will stay there again
Very nice place, had everything you could need and more
We're happy you found it a nice experience!
We hope you return in the not to distant future.
Perfect Kauai Getaway
We had a fantastic experience at this property! The unit is exactly as described and as shown in the pictures - but our experience still exceeded our expectations.
The owner did a super job of communicating both before and during our stay. Everything in the condo was perfect and ready for our arrival. We found beach chairs, beach towels, boogie boards, and a cooler that all made our stay just that much more convenient.
Although the unit is exactly as pictured, pictures simply can’t capture the beauty and peace you will experience while sitting on the lanai sipping your morning coffee as you watch the sun come up.
We did not find the lack of central air conditioning to be an issue - opening the windows during the day provided a pleasant breeze in the living area and the A/C unit in the bedroom made for perfect sleeping conditions.
We really enjoyed the Kapaa area - great restaurants and local culture. Good beaches are nearby and the 7 mile walking / jogging path in-between the unit and the ocean was perfect for our morning runs. Kapaa is also very convenient to get to the Princeville and Hanalei areas on the north side, as well as Poipu on the south.
We are planning to make this our preferred stay location WHEN we return.
Thank you for choosing our condo to be your home away from home as you celebrated 24 years of marriage & also a birthday while on the “Garden Isle”. Tony & I are so happy to hear that you both felt comfortable and cared for during your stay. Would love to say “Aloha” to you for yet another celebratory getaway as there’s still so much for you to see and enjoy here in paradise. Until next time! Mahalo
Pona Kai F204
Great condo: beachfront view was gorgeous; nice shower; A/C in bedroom made nights very comfortable; owner is super attentive and reachable for anything you need; and NO bugs of any kind (that is an accomplishment in the tropics!).
We are pleased you enjoyed our condo and took the time to review your stay so others can feel comfortable when they book our place.. Hopefully, you will be back in the not too distant future. Mahalo!
You will find our condominium at the Pono Kai Resort, on a 12 acre beachfront property centrally located on the east shore in the historic town of Kapaa. We are only 15 minutes (8 miles) from Lihue Airport. Boutique shops and many good restaurants are within walking distance. The north, south & west shore are approximately 35-45 minutes away from our location.
Other Activities: Lydgate Park, boogie boarding, restaurants, boating, kite surfing, rafting, shuffleboard, shopping, kayaking, paragliding, fishing, hiking and golf.
Golf: There are 10 golf courses on Kauai. The closest one to the Pono Kai is the municipal Wailua Golf Course.
