Casa Norinha is a countryside haven, offering you a truly private villa experience. It's ideal for families, groups of adults or couples looking for somewhere away from the resorts yet close enough to easily visit the busier areas of the Algarve. It is an Alojamento Local licensed property, registration number 11144/AL, fully compliant with the Portuguese law on short term lettings.

This detached, secluded villa is set in over an acre of landscaped gardens and is surrounded by fig, almond, olive and carob trees. It is completely private, not overlooked and enjoys far-reaching views across the Algarve countryside.

There is a 10m x 4m Roman-style pool with underwater lighting and a large pool terrace with six sun beds, large parasols and an outdoor shower.

The three bedrooms - one double, two twin - have fitted wardrobes, dressing tables and sliding doors to the outside, fitted with mosquito-proof shutters. The twin beds can be connected to form very comfortable super king beds. There is a cot, high chair and buggy, as well as two additional single futons, suitable for children.

All bedrooms and the sitting room have their own terraces which lead directly to the pool area and gardens.

The villa features a large living room with wood burning stove and dining area, a covered outdoor dining terrace with built in barbecue, a fully equipped kitchen and a roof terrace for secluded sunbathing.

WiFi internet is included in the rental rates. The living room has a flat screen TV with HDMI and USB ports, as well as a DVD player, satellite receiver and Nintendo Wii. The stereo has indoor and outdoor speakers, CD and cassette players and can be connected to MP3 players.

There is air conditioning in all the bedrooms and ceiling fans in the living room and kitchen. In the winter the air conditioners can be set to heating mode, and the wood burning stove makes the living room cosy.

The large gardens have many mature trees and shrubs, a games area, hammock and newly planted orchard. There is also a pergola which we have just planted with grape vines, roses and passion flower.

Games equipment is provided, including a croquet set, cricket set, boules, golf clubs and a volleyball net for the pool. There is also a tipi for the children to play in, made with bamboo from the local river.

There are two mountain bikes available to guests, for a small weekly rental fee plus damage deposit. The bikes are very useful for exploring the local area and for trips into Paderne.

Casa Norinha is ideally situated for exploring the Algarve - just fifteen minutes from the central beaches and Albufeira, and centrally located so that the whole region can be visited in day trips.

There are many lovely walks in the immediate area and a 12C Moorish castle nearby, which is the subject of an ongoing archaeological dig.

The nearby town of Paderne is traditional and peaceful, with friendly locals and some excellent, yet inexpensive, restaurants.

Our house manager, Norbert, is German and also speaks Portuguese and English.

We are happy to negotiate on rates for longer rentals.

About Alex Outhwaite

My family has been visiting Portugal since I was a baby, and Casa Norinha was actually built by my parents, assisted by local contractors from Paderne who are still family friends.

The house is very much a home from home for us and it is managed in Portugal by another great family friend, Norbert, who runs a villa maintenance business in partnership with my aunt!

Everyone involved in managing Casa Norinha is friendly and welcoming, and will do all they can to make your stay a pleasant and memorable one.

Why Alex Outhwaite chose Albufeira

My parents bought the land at Casa Norinha in the early 80s, when we lived in the area for a year. They wanted a rural plot on which to build a holiday home away from the bustle of the coastal resorts.

What makes this villa unique

The villa was designed to make the most of its location - nestled into the hillside so that it is private and secluded, but with lovely views over the countryside. The sun sets behind the hills opposite the terrace, and the stars are so clear at night.

In the driveway there is a huge old carob (alfarroba) tree, and the surrounding land is scattered with numerous fig, olive and almond trees, dramatic agaves and a profusion of wild flowers in the Spring.

There are many birds in the area, and birdsong is a constant backdrop at Casa Norinha. In the evening, swallows come and drink from the pool by swooping down across the terrace. I have also spotted a hoopoe several times in the garden in the early mornings. Swallowtail butterflies are also a common sight in the Spring and early Summer.

The villa has a very large garden with many mature trees and shrubs.

Casa Norinha was designed in the traditional Algarvian style, with Moorish chimneys, terracotta pathways and curving architectural details. The villa is decorated with a nod to the Algarve's unique combination of European and North African influences - painted tiles and ceramics, dark wood, marble and granite. The garden pergola is paved with Portuguese calçada stones.

Sitting room features sliding doors out on to outdoor dining terrace with large dining table and eight comfortable chairs. Maid service is once weekly - additional cleaning on request. There is a tipi for children to play in made of bamboo from the local river. Manager is German and speaks good English and Portuguese. He is extremely friendly and helpful and can generally arrange facilities such as bicycles, airport transfers etc.

Beautifully quiet and well appointed property

Our first trip to Portugal but it won't be our last. The property is secluded and has just about everything you could require. The information provided by the owner and the extremely helpful feedback to our questions made us feel confident that we would enjoy our stay and we weren't disappointed! It is set in a beautiful location (even more beautiful I think before the highway in the distance was built - not a problem though, just an observation). The sunsets were spectacular. With the BBQ lit and beer in hand I was in 7th heaven! A car is definitely a must unless you enjoy hiking to the nearest shop. Everything we needed was provided (even down to a baby buggy and stairgate to the pool for our 11 month old granddaughter). We didn't manage to eat out in any of the restaurants recommended in the visitor comment book (due to aforesaid Granddaughter's sleeping patterns!) but will do next time as we have already booked for next year. Thank you Alex for inviting us into your villa in Paderne and being so helpful. It was brilliant.

Excellent secluded villa

We have just returned from a very restful holiday at the villa. The booking procedure was so easy and personalised by Alex her self. The villa is spacious and very private with lovely grounds to sit in to in or out of the sun at anytime. The pool is a real treat to cool off in the hot Portuguese sun and is very well maintained. Paderne offers a variety of restaurants offering local Portuguese food and wines at very reasonable prices depending on your choice. We found that there is a path over the hill into Paderne that you can walk in about 25 minutes to the centre (so no worries over 'drink and drive'). The path is about 100 yards on the left from the villa entrance.

We found the local shops in Paderne to be just as cheap as the larger supermarkets in the area so we shopped with them most days. They don't stock a large variety of sparkling wines though!

Any minor issues that we had were sorted immediately by Norbert and his team (e.g. the internet went down one day when we were there). All in all it is a villa that we plan to return to. Thank you Alex.

Lovely villa and gardens

again a wonderful holiday

we have been at casa norina for years and absolutely love it, its a home from home the villa is always clean, and the garden this year was wonderful with all the changes, its always a pleasure to book the villa, alex makes it very easy for me. and norbet, what can I say, I want to bring him home with us, there is nothing that man wont do to make your stay a relaxing pleasure, he really is top guy...he goes out of his way to help even though he is always very busy. I would like to say that I would recommend this villa to friends and relatives, but then they would all go, and the villa would be soo booked up, I would never get a holiday. seriously though, I give it 10/10. thanks alex for the wonderful stays we have at casa norina.

Yet again a fabulous holiday

Wonderful escape, pretty villa.

We absolutely loved the villa, so peaceful and quiet and yet not even half an hour to the coast or a few mins into Paderne and there is a big supermarket about 10 mins drive away. Every conceivable thing has been catered for and there is everything you could possibly need including a lovely welcome pack with a bottle of chilled wine. Everything is here to make your stay like home from home. The villa is spotless and well maintained, the dry garden is incredible and a lot of work has gone into it. So nice to sit around the lovely pool area or the veranda and look down onto the gardens. Norbert who is on hand to fix any problems is an absolute love and nothing too much trouble for him, it is so nice to know when you are abroad there is someone you can call on.

We would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this villa to friends or family and we do hope we can return again. Alex the owner provided excellent customer service and prompt replies to any queries we had and it was a pleasure dealing with him. What else can we say, except thank you for sharing your villa with us even if for only a few weeks, wished it could have been longer, perhaps next year!

Paderne is situated about 2km away. Paderne is a typical, unspoilt Portuguese town. There are several good restaurants within and close to the town. There is a health centre, police station, supermarket, post office, bank, pharmacy and various other shops. The friendly population is close knit and very welcoming to visitors.

A larger supermarket is located in Ferreiras, about 7 km from the villa.

Guia, with its shopping mall and famous piri piri restaurants, is a 15 min drive. Albufeira is about 15km from Casa Norinha and has a fabulous beach as well as plenty of shops and restaurants. It is the tourist hub of the Algarve but retains plenty of charm. A short drive along the coastal road takes you to some beautiful beaches - quieter than Albufeira and with amazing cliffs and rock formations.

Being centrally located in the Algarve, Casa Norinha is a great base for exploring the whole region and day trips to Sagres, Lisbon or Seville are highly recommended.

The lovely towns of Boliquieme and Alte are a short drive from Casa Norinha and there are countryside walks to be had right from the front door, including to the 12th century Paderne castle and a roman bridge.
