"Absolutely beautiful cottage in a stunning location" September 2015

Bleak House Cottage was no less than a dream! We had a wonderful shortbreak in this amazing cottage. The views are breathtaking, Bleak House Cottage is located in a beautiful part of the Peak District. Close to the Roaches and close to picture perfect Longnor. There was a fire burning. We loved everything. It's sort of a healing place, away from busy life... I would live there forever if I could! :) - November 2015

About Maria Killoran

I was born in Manchester but spent many years abroad. Returning back to the UK I worked in my families interior design business until an I had unexpected move into television. I worked for both ITV and BBC for almost ten years when upon the death of my mother I decided for a complete change. I have three horses - two who have competed at Horse of the Year and three dogs which was the driving force behind my 'relocation to the country'.

Maria Killoran purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Maria Killoran chose Staffordshire

When I decided on my move to the country I had no particular area in mind, it just had to feel right. My daughter and I traveled the country from north to south and east to west. We heard about Bleak House by accident just two days before it was due to go to auction. We came had a look and fell in love. It was ramshackle and in need of much work but I was philosophical and if I we were meant to have the house we would. On the night of the auction we went along and waited until everyone seemed to have stopped bidding and we put in one bid. Nobody came back and we won the house on that one bid.

What makes this cottage unique

I love Bleak House, it is a house with much history set in a small hamlet dating back to the 12th century. In recent years, I have researched the families who lived here and in the area since the 1600s. The newly restored Bleak House Cottage is the original stonemasons home. The location is magical throughout the year and every day has its own special beauty. I never tire of driving into Leek or Buxton, just a short distance, and seeing the majestic Roaches, the autumn mists flooding across the valley like a sea, spectacular wildlife from stags, curlews, owls, kestrels and so many more. We are set in natures paradise where the seasons of the year are still clearly defined, from the first snowdrop announcing the end of winter to the nesting swallows departing marking summers end. If you love the countryside, you too will love Bleak House Cottage. The cottage has been a labour of love, I have sought to create a beautiful environment without destroying its heritage.

Fabulous quaint little cottage

  • 5 of 5

Wow, where to start. Maria met us upon our arrival who is just a fantastic host. The cottage is perfect. It is cosy, homely, very quiet and just amazing. We took our 2 shih tzu's with us who loved laying by the log burner. The outside space is perfect for them and knowing they was safe was great. I would recommend this cottage and Maria as a host 100%. Just the perfect little break. Thank you.

Lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cottage in beautiful surroundings. Maria made us feel very welcome. Lots of walks from the cottage door and lots of information in the cottage for walks and other things to do. Nearby Leek is a wonderful town for a wander and we ate in two pubs close by recommended by Maria which were great. A lovely break.

Lovely, peaceful cottage

  • 5 of 5

The Bleak House cottage was exactly what we had hoped for. It was cozy and peaceful with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. The last day we were there it snowed so we ended up leaving a bit earlier than we had planned since we needed to be back in London and didn't know how far the snow extended. Wish we could have stayed longer. It was the perfect place to come home to after days spent exploring. The little wood burning stove in the living room just added to the charm, especially on cold evening! Maria was a wonderful hostess and did so much to make our stay so enjoyable. We heartily recommend Bleak House and would love to come back for another visit.

The village of Longnor was a great place to have tea and scones and the fish and chips were wonderful. We also went to the farmers market in Bakewell which takes place every Monday and enjoyed just strolling through the streets. Especially enjoyed the "locks of love" on the bridge. The entire Peak District was beautiful. Wish we had more time to explore.

One other place we recommend is stopping at Brownspit Farm to get fresh eggs and homemade sausages. They also sell firewood and it's only about a mile from the cottage.
