About Dr Darrall Higson

Medical doctor. I have retired to a village on the edge of the beautiful Cotswolds, so this is our home when in London. We enjoy making it available to guests for a few weeks in the year. I endeavour to come into town to greet guests or, if that is not possible, I can leave the keys for you in a key safe.

Dr Darrall Higson purchased this apartment in 1999

Why Dr Darrall Higson chose South Bank

I am sure you will tell people how lucky you were to find such an oasis of tranquillity within walking distance of the bustling heart of London.

I do not use agencies but manage the property myself. This is how we have achieved 46x5-star reviews over this and another website ( by June 2018).

What makes this apartment unique

In the safe, lively area of the South Bank yet tucked away in a small, peaceful development. After a tiring day of sight seeing relax on your own spacious garden terrace.

As the South Bank London website says:

"The South Bank is home to an astoundingly diverse selection of events and attractions that take place in and around the iconic theatres, galleries and museums that line the riverside of the city centre. The area is buzzing with things to see and do all year round; from music, film, dance and theatre to exhibitions, debates and festivals, including many free and family oriented events.

It isn’t hard to see why the South Bank is considered by so many to be the cultural heart of the capital."

charming, comfortable and convenient

  • 5 of 5

We were in this apartment for two weeks and thinking what we would say to our friends when they asked how we liked it.

You get used to situations quickly and adapt your behaviour accordingly. For example, my initial reaction concerned the size; but Judith took the top floor, and I, with my knee and later rib pains, took the lower floor. This eliminated most stair climbing for me; I could use the garden exit, then take the elevator (or lift) to the ground floor and outside.

There was a lot of thought and care put into this apartment; the visitor will find all of the material comforts of home. As a cook, I appreciated the fully equipped kitchen: plenty of small appliances, tools and necessities for comfortable food preparation. If you get lost, Dr Higson backs you up with a binder full of relevant information. The television was easy enough to understand, but getting the stove working challenged us until we poured through the manuals. We didn't bother with the dishwasher or the sound system. We have stayed in many apartments in London, but this was easily

the best furnished in general. Everything worked, there was plenty of hot water, supplies, etc, and all the other amenities you expect, but rarely get in a rental property. This is probably because Dr Higson spends part of his time there himself.

What a pleasant surprise was the garden right outside the main lower room. There are common and shared spaces, and we had no problems with the quiet neighbours, nor did they with us. Most of the time we felt we were living there by ourselves.

We found the location excellent for our needs.

A two minute walk took us to the river, with all its familiar sights, then we discovered the exciting surprises at the Oxo Tower, where we found artisans and craft people showing sophisticated and quality works: no tat there. A six minute walk gave us the convenience of a Waitrose store, which carried almost everything we needed. Other foods we bought at the Borough Market, a short bus ride away on the RV 1. We filled up our Oyster cards to get around easily.

Would we stay there again? That's usually the last question asked. In a word: yes.

great location & flat

  • 5 of 5

Dr. Higson could not have been a better host for our flat. He greeted us for check in, explained how everything worked & was available via email throughout our stay for any questions we had. The beds were comfortable & the unit was well stocked. Paper products, kitchen products (dish soap, dishwasher soap, laundry soap, etc), bathroom products (TP, shampoo, conditioner, soap, even air freshener spray) were all there with plenty for the week we stayed. The location was fabulous, walking distance to everything. It was a quiet retreat, even in the heart of Southwerk, just steps from the south bank of the River Thames. The only problem we had, was trying to work the washer/dryer. He explained how to use it, we had the manual for it, but if you've never used a single w/d combo unit, it is challenging. There were tons of USB outlets for charging. 2 hairdryers so no need for an adapter, plenty of mirrors (you cannot use hairdryer in bathroom due to "shaver only" outlet, so mirrors in the bedrooms were appreciated.

We had 2 couples, so having 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms was perfect.

Owner's Response: So glad you all enjoyed your stay and appreciated the lengths to which we go to make guests comfortable. You correctly observed that mains voltage (240V) sockets are not allowed in bathrooms in the UK, in order to prevent accidents when appliances fall into baths. That is why the hairdryers are in the bedrooms. Hope to welcome you again when I'll give you a longer training course on how to use the washer/dryer.

Wonderful, well located apartment

  • 5 of 5

For a party of four adults, this apartment had everything we were looking for. We were in London for just a week and the location was perfect for accessing the tube and bus routes. It is in easy walking distance to restaurants and pubs as well as Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury Express shops. The RV1 bus a very short walk from the front door took us to Covent garden and back. Fantastic!

Cozy, well-situated, and thoughtful!

  • 5 of 5

Dr. Higson has created a truly welcoming, comfortable, and quiet oasis in the midst of the glorious mayhem that is London. From our first communication, Dr. Higson demonstrated the highest level of care for our comfort and convenience. My husband and I were traveling to London to meet our daughter, who had been studying abroad in Paris, for a Christmas through New Year's getaway. Not only was everything exactly as advertised, Dr. Higson set up a Christmas tree, and left a lovely bottle of wine to add to our joy. And joy there was. The flat is quite and comfortable, and is perfectly situated -- easy walks to Waterloo and Southwark tube stations, or you can walk across any of several bridges in minutes to be in the heart of the city. There are food markets close by, and many restaurants, plus the National Theatre, the Tate Modern museum, The Old and Young Vic theatres, and more. Plus, Dr. Higson has labelled EVERYTHING and left a comprehensive guide to the apartment so you can relax and enjoy a real home-away-from-home. Probably our favorite rental ever!

Location and Comfort

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay in this well located apartment. Two couples shared and we both had our own bathroom and entrance. Our host was very generous with information about the area. He also left us well supplied with all the items you need for a short stay. The apartment was surrounded by offices, so it was quiet night and day. Having a garden in inner London was a bonus.
