Down Cottage is part of a magnificent estate built in 1911 for the Jameson whisky family, Down Cottage sleeps four people and offers the perfect mix of luxury and seclusion. Set just outside the pretty Stannary town of Chagford, it’s a great base for walking on Dartmoor and for generally relaxing and getting away from absolutely everything!
About 1½ miles from the centre of Chagford, Down Cottage is set high on a hill with wonderful views towards Meldon Down and the surrounding moor. The cottage overlooks a shared drive to one side of the main house and is attached to an arch that leads to a stable yard. There are no horses now and peace and quiet is assured. The owners live in the main house with their three dogs. Immediately to the front of the house is a small, enclosed lawned garden with a mature copper beech hedge. To the side is a small terrace with garden furniture – a perfect secluded suntrap looking out over glorious countryside.
Guests staying at Down Cottage are welcome to explore the extensive ten-acre gardens and grounds of the main house. As well as the formal gardens and lawns there is an area, almost like a mini-tor, of moss-covered granite boulders, a great place to sit and contemplate, with wonderful views. The grounds extend down to the South Teign River and makes a delightful walk.
The cottage has been renovated with sensitivity and style, using muted Farrow & Ball colours and an eclectic mix of largely antique furniture and quality soft furnishings lovingly sought out and styled by the owners.
On the ground floor there is a lovely sunny breakfast/dining room with an open fire, a well-fitted compact kitchen with slate flooring and a wood burner plus a cloakroom/toilet.
On the first floor is the the lounge which enjoys far-reaching views out across the moor. It has comfy sofas, reading lights and a TV and DVD player. The double bedroom is decorated in Oriental style and has a 6’ four poster bed. There is a flat screen TV and the bedroom’s clothes-hanging space is on its own landing giving plenty of room and privacy. The twin bedroom is elegantly furnished in creams and browns - the beds can be zipped together to make a queen size double bed - and there is plenty of wardrobe space and a wall mounted TV. The views from this room over the surrounding countryside are stunning. The bathroom is elegant and well equipped with a bath, plus bath-shower and washbasin. The WC is separate.
We spent nine nights at Down Cottage. It is absolutely one of the nicest places we have ever rented. Beautifully decorated, well-equipped, beautiful views, just below the moor, close to Chagford village. The weather during our stay was cold and rainy and it was very nice to come back to cozy Down Cottage after venturing out.
The owners were very friendly and invited us to explore the grounds, which they have rescued from many years of neglect. With the North Teign River running below, the landscape is spectacular. We took several walks when the rain abated...
We ate all dinners in the cottage's lovely dining room, provisioning in Chagford, where there is a wonderful botcher (with the most flavorful chicken, locally-raised, we have ever had), a bakery, a dairy, and wonderful wine store. We had outstanding lunch at Gidleigh Park, splurging on the nine course tasting menu. Fabulous from start to finish and in all regards...
Despite the weather, we were able to do the Teign River Gorge walk near Castle Drogo and the Scorhill walk on Dartmoor. We look forward to adding other walks during our next stay at Down Cottage, which we highly recommend!
We have enjoyed another wonderful stay at Down Cottage. After a lovely warm welcome from the owners we enjoyed a week in this beautifully situated and appointed cottage. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
It was exactly as described, very comfortable, clean and well appointed. We chatted with John when we arrived and on leaving, who was charming and made us feel very welcome. We would certainly recommend Down cottage to others. Chagford is a lovely small town, with an excellent choice of eateries. We had an excellent Sunday Lunch at the Three Crowns, and an excellent Saturday breakfast at the Old Forge. There are a number of other good options too. The location is stunning (in the heart of Dartmoor) with plenty to do nearby for us and our 6yr old. Would love to return another time.
My wife and I are in our seventies and appreciate a comfortable quiet cottage. The corsage is surrounded by countryside and has beautiful views. The owners were very friendly and helpful, but left us in perfect peace. An ideal cottage.
Down Cottage enjoys a superb location with fine views. It’s just a short drive to Chagford with its wide range of independent shops, eating places and pubs while in the other direction it’s an equally short drive to the open moorland of Dartmoor. This affords excellent walking and the chance to leave the stresses of everyday life behind. For a picnic we’d particularly recommend the banks of the River Teign, which can be reached by following the boundary wall down from Batworthy Corner. The cottage itself offers every home comfort - high quality, spacious accommodation and excellent facilities, including TV and DVD player in the lounge, a TV in each bedroom and a fully stocked kitchen with everything you need for self-catering, including a ceramic hob, microwave and dishwasher plus a washing machine in the adjacent garage. The living rooms and bedrooms are tastefully furnished giving a style and elegance that is easy to relax in. If you don’t fancy cooking a meal each day then Chagford has four pubs, which between them offer everything from standard ‘pub grub’ to high class dining (we were particularly impressed with the Chagford Arms), two restaurants (one of which is Indian) and some excellent cafes. In addition there is a delightful delicatessan which will serve your every need particularly for packed lunches. Guests at Down Cottage also have the run of the garden and the large expanse of land that extends down to the spectacular, boulder-strewn River Teign. This year was our first visit to Down Cottage and we’re so impressed that we’re booking again for next year.
Love this place. Second stay here and feels like home from home. All immediately relaxed on arrival. Grounds beautiful and perfect enclosed paddock for the dog to run off steam (and the children!). Chagford lovely town with good selection of eateries and cakes, all dog friendly. Fernworthy Reservoir close by, very pretty. Open air swimming pool in Chagford where you can hire wetsuits if the water is too cold for the kids. Loved walks over the moors where the animals roam freely. Dog friendly beaches about an hours drive away. Very warm welcome from owners and very well equipped cottage.
The small Stannary town of Chagford, prettily nestled among the Dartmoor hills, is a great place to visit. At its heart are the two well-known family-run shops of Webbers and Bowdens – a visit to both will take up at least half a day of your time! There are also traditional craft shops and local artists, clothes shops, cafés and pubs, all clustered around a small square with a pretty ‘pepperpot’ building at its centre.
There is an award-winning outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and superb walking in every direction. The River Teign hurries through woods and meadows nearby and on below Castle Drogo (National Trust), an imposing landmark set high on a granite outcrop.
The town of Okehampton and City of Exeter are around half an hour away in opposite directions, or take a stunning drive across the moor to come to the pretty town of Tavistock. The whole expanse of Dartmoor is on the doorstep waiting to be explored.
If you want to travel further afield, Devon has glorious south and north coasts.
