By the sea and surrounded by fields, ideal for those who want to escape reality

Overview

About the property

A comfortable holiday home, 2/3 bedrooms, all mod cons and no added extras.

Our family have owned Humperdink, our cottage, since 1965 and we have recently brought it into the 21st century, retaining its charm and character while adding some new creature comforts, including gas central heating with radiators and running hot water (which is a first for us never having this luxury at our cottage before!) to make any stay a memorable and pleasurable whatever the weather, or time of year.

We have no hidden extras with our home, bed linen, towels, tea towel and cleaning are all included in the price. All pillows and mattresses have protector covers. Check in is 4 pm and check out is 11 am.

The surrounding area is fields, however the river, sea and beach are just over the sea wall, where you can walk and enjoy the views, swim in the summer or you can stay at our cottage, sit in the front garden watching the sheep in the field opposite or sit on the patio on the comfy rattan chairs at the back of the property and listen to the wildlife right on your doorstep, away from the hustle and bustle of reality.

The cottage has two bedrooms upstairs, one with a wooden Kingsize bed that has views to the sea and a second bedroom with a wooden double bed, as well as a single bed, so this room can actually sleep three. This room has spectacular views across the fields and also to the sea, where you can see the Wind Turbines near Clacton.

There is a room downstairs, at the back of the property, that can either be a bedroom or a playroom. This room has french doors which open out onto a decking area, complete with rattan chairs and a table, all ready for you to enjoy your meal or drink a la fresco. In the summer you wake on a lovely sunny morning with the sun streaming in, encouraging you to open the patio doors and take in the peace and solitude of the area.

Our cottage has a delightful open living space where you can cook, eat and socialize. There is a new fitted, fully equipped kitchen, with a washing machine, electric oven and hob, slow cooker, George Foreman Grill and microwave. In the living space there is a TV/DVD player/ radio in the comfy sitting area and a dining room table and 7 chairs. The bathroom, again, has been completely revamped with a shower over the bath.

There is 4 G connectivity via a dongle, however, this is not suitable for games playing or for downloading films.

The unique location on the Essex coast, which incidentally is one of the driest places in the UK, is adjacent to the Essex Wildlife Trust EWT (www.essexwt.org.uk) reserve on Colne Point which has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) affording habitat for many different birds both resident and migratory. As a guest you are allowed access to the beaches and wildlife reserve, which could be described a very exclusive experience as only members and residents are usually allowed.

London is only 2 hours away by car and there is a main train station at Colchester which is approximately 20 mins away from Humperdink. However, there are smaller train stations at Gt Bentley and Clacton.

The nearest village is St Osyth and it's only about an hour away by foot or ten minutes by car. Clacton, Frinton, Walton, Brightlingsea and Colchester are all, at the most, thirty minutes away by car offering you a variety of amusements and shops or different beaches.

Escape to our comfy and welcoming Cottage and have a holiday you will always remember, away from the hustle and bustle of reality. The sea air will help you to also have a really good night's sleep.

Don't forget your wellies or binoculars!

About Simon Wakefield

This photo shows quite a few members of my family. We're sitting on the sea wall watching a really really high tide, a memorable experience in April and October with the moon and tide cycles.

Simon Wakefield purchased this chalet in 1965

Why Simon Wakefield chose Essex

The Cottage, as we call it or HUMPERDINK to give it its proper name, has been in our family since the sixties. Four generations have enjoyed many a happy summer holiday, or lazy weekend here. The property has a welcoming charm about it and a very homely atmosphere, away from it all just ready for you to turn back the clock, unwind and be together.

What makes this chalet unique

Beautiful countryside teaming with bird and wildlife. Then over the sea wall is a river that at very high tides floods the marshes giving the area a totally different perspective and the sea, which at low tide reveals the mussel beds. You can enjoy views across to Mersea Island or Bradwell, on a clear day, and watch the various boats out on the Blackwater from the upstairs front bedroom. Also, the sunsets are spectacular and the clear night skies are full of stars due to the lack of light pollution.

In the village of St Osyth not only is there the Priory there is now the Curve Wake Park (theteam@curvewakepartk.co.uk) is you are interested in water sports. Out cottage is in unique surroundings and this is not really appreciated until you visit.

Perfect to get away from it all!

  • 5 of 5

Had a marvellous long weekend with family and my daughter's dog Alfie, who loved the deserted beach. House very comfortable and very well equipped. Simon and Diana were accommodating and responsive hosts. All perfect!

A lovely property with a family history, located in a unique landscape.

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a quiet break and were not disappointed. The weather was changeable but this actually added to the experience - huge skies, changing colours of the landscape. We loved it. My Mum is disabled and the downstairs bedroom was a great help for her. The cottage is well equipped and the owners and the neighbours could not have been more helpful.

There's been a lot written about the road to the cottage and I was wondering what to expect! However, it was absolutely fine. We couldn't see what the fuss was about. If you drive it with care, acknowledging that it's a farm track, it's absolutely fine. If you drive it like it's the A12, then you will have problems. It's used daily by local people and it really isn't an issue.

A lovely house in a stunning location

  • 4 of 5

There is something magical about Humperdink and its location. When we arrived I was a bit anxious about the long uneven lane that took us from the main road to the house, it felt as though we were driving into the middle of nowhere, but it was worth the trek.

The house is surrounded on three sides by fields, small winding creeks and wild reed beds. On the fourth side is the seawall. From upstairs, you can see the sea on the other side of the wall. When the tide is high and the wind's in the right direction, you can even hear the waves when you're dropping off to sleep. The house is light and airy with views across the countryside in all directions. The sunsets are especially stunning.

We were away with three generations of our family with great-nanny (88 years old) and great-granddaughter (4 years old). We all loved the house, although the stairs were a bit of a challenge to the oldest and youngest members and the one loo in the bathroom entailed some negotiation. But over all we were enchanted by the place and will have only happy memories of our stay.

Diana and Simon were always prompt in their communications, and helpful and accommodating. The house was spotlessly clean, there was plenty of hot water and the kitchen was well equipped. In the field opposite, we enjoyed watching the four sheep that belonged to the lovely neighbours who made us feel very welcome. All of us enjoyed crabbing by the sea-wall and watching the many wild birds especially the murmurations of starlings at dusk.

We did daytrips to the beaches at St Osyth, Brightlingsea and Mersey Island. We also visited a couple of National Trust properties: Bourne Mill near Colchester and Paycocke's House and Garden at Coggeshall. We also enjoyed the many walks straight from the house.

If you enjoy peace, quiet and the great outdoors, this is the place for you.

Relaxing escape to really quite countryside in a comfortable cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay. The cottage is very cosy and clean with beautiful views! It's a very secluded area and really relaxing. The neighbors are lovely people and they have some sheep and cats, it added to the experience. We'll definitely recommend this cottage and hopefully we will come back!

Beautiful house and surroundings

  • 5 of 5

This property is so well placed for peace and tranquility, it really was an amazing place to stay to get some time out from the 'rat race'!

The neighbours were very helpful and friendly and with the property accepting dogs (with owners prior permission) we and the dogs had a great getaway.

The house is well equipped with everyday appliances and lots of board games for the whole family to enjoy & very comfy beds too!

All in all we will be back :)

Sweet cottage but location quite bleak and difficult access

  • 4 of 5

Lovely house, however we found the location a bit too remote and the access drive is so bad that we burst two tyres and had to call out the AA.

Owner's Response: Glad that you like our cottage. The remoteness is what appeals to those who like to get away from the hustle and bustle of town and city life and we have tried to show, in our photos, that there are just a few properties around and then the beach and surrounding area that lend themselves to some lovely walks. The access to our cottage belongs to the farmer who farms the nearby land and also has a holiday house opposite. It does mean that people drive more carefully and slowly to the properties.

There is a Nisa convenience store located on the road to Point Clear. At the junction of Lee Wick Lane turn left and the store can be found about 500 yards on the left hand side. They sell just about everything and the prices are very keen too. If you need major supermarkets you can find them all in either Clacton or Colchester. Clacton has a safe, sandy beach, Pier, cinema, restaurants and nightlife. Frinton also has a lovely sandy beach and is much quieter. Colchester is more cultural with a Castle, old city wall, theatre, Zoo, swimming complex and Spa as well as shops and nightlife. However, Humperdink and it's surroundings has a lot to offer such as walks, peaceful surroundings for you to unwind in and just enjoy, recharge your batteries and forget about the outside world! Gt Bentley is the best train station to use to reach the Cottage.
