About the property

An authentic eco experience in a traditional Bulgarian village

Our eco holiday cottage is on our small organic farm. Described in the UK Guardian as 'a labour of love and ingenuity' and awarded theTripAdvisor People's Choice Award for no 1 in Bulgaria in 2015 and 2016, you can be assured of a quality holiday. The cottage is a restored farmhouse full of period features and is decorated in rustic style.

There are 2 large double bedrooms, a large twin room and a small single room. Three of the bedrooms, the library and the family bathroom lead onto a wooden verandah overlooking the guest private garden. The second double room and its bathroom are located in an annexe in the garden. Guests can help themselves to organic veg or pre-order a Wild Thyme breakfast hamper with home baked bread, preserves, home-made cheese and yoghurt, fresh goat's milk and fresh eggs. There is an open plan modern kitchen, dining area and living room with exposed beams and finished in natural clay paints.

In the garden there is an open-air barn space, terrace with bbq, hanging bed, firepit and hammock. Eco features include solar panels, solar water, recycling and an extra compost toilet.

Kids love to help feed our chickens, pig and goats or have a bonfire under the stars. We offer tours of our garden and guests can help making cheese, sausages or alcohol. We can arrange a foraging trip, horse and cart ride or a Bulgarian cooking lesson with a villager or join us on an archaeology trip to one of the many wonderful and undiscovered gems of the region.

About Chris Fenton-Thomas

We are Chris and Claire, two archaeologists, who gave up our jobs in England in 2009 to go in search of a simpler life. Chris comes originally from a small village in East Yorkshire and spent a good deal of his life raising three sons and studying for a PhD in archaeology. He worked for many years as an archaeologist and lecturer in the UK. Claire comes originally from Ireland and left in her late teens to study in England. From there, she travelled, studied and worked in many different places, including for long periods in the US, Japan and Australia. In 2004, she returned to the UK and met Chris on an archaeology dig!

Chris Fenton-Thomas purchased this farmhouse in 2010

Why Chris Fenton-Thomas chose Targovishte Province

In 2010 we travelled from the UK via eco projects in France to Bulgaria, where we immediately fell in love with the people and traditional way of life in Palamartsa village. The people immediately welcomed us into their big hearts and shared their skills, knowledge and garden produce with us. When we saw the two houses that now make up Wild Thyme, we knew we'd found what we were looking for. Working with local craftsmen, we renovated the properties using natural building methods of mud plaster, clay paint and limewash. We preserved the original architecture, features and even colour of the eco cottage and created a peaceful garden.

Our aim was to create an ecological experience while maintaining comfort so we installed solar panels, solar water, a composting toilet, rainwater recycling, greywater recycling and waste reuse and recycling.

In our garden, we grow all kinds of vegetables organically and keep chickens, a pig and 2 goats. Our goats provide delicious milk which we turn into yoghurt and cheese.

We love this village and feel very much a part of the community here. There is an active cultural life and Chris played the violin in the village band for a number of years.

We do our best to support the village economically and socially by buying locally; employing local people to help on our workshops; hosting artists from other countries; and encouraging cultural exchange.

What makes this farmhouse unique

We immediately fell in love with the two farmhouses that now make up Wild Thyme. It was the period features such as the wooden beams, the old windows and original doors and the faded grandeur of the place which won our hearts.

The original design had obviously been done with great attention to detail, skill and care to create a wonderful cohesive and calming energy. We carried on this labour of love in our restoration by preserving the original and only enhancing the already peaceful atmosphere and organic feel with the addition of mud plasters and clay paints.

A great quiet place for individually tourists

  • 5 of 5

Our family has felt in the big house and the village very well. We have met a lot of dogs, cats and goats. That our children like. In the area there was plenty to look at. The owner and resident of the village are very friendly. For hot summer days there are near a swimming pool. We were very pleased upon arrival on cheese, jam, yogurt and fresh bread.

The best B&B in Bulgaria !

  • 5 of 5

I spent time in the Wild Thyme Organic Farm for my birthday and it was a real treat ! Chris and Claire are absolutely lovely hosts, very attentive to our comfort and knowledgeable about the surroundings. Their breakfast made of local and homemade products is delicious ! The rooms are cosy and pleasantly set up in a traditional bulgarian house, around a charming garden. We experienced the cooking class of Bulgarian food given by Maria and the horse cart ride with another neighbour. Chris and Claire have excellent relations with the village and make sure to collaborate with their inhabitants whenever possible. I highly recommend this place. From my many trips to Bulgaria, this one is by far my favourite !

A beautiful sanctuary

  • 5 of 5

My family and I have travelled quite a bit throughout Europe but I can honestly say that Wild Thyme is one of the best place we have stayed in. not just because it is so beautiful, or because the owners are so warm & welcoming, but because a holiday at Wild Thyme feels like a holiday from all the stresses and busyness of modern life. The tranquility and slow pace in this pretty farmhouse made for such a special holiday as we cooked food from the garden or watched a movie in the barn.

We could have stayed for much longer then a week and I would recommend this amazing place to anyone who is truly wishing to 'get away from it all' -I can't imagine a more idyllic setting to do so.

Palamartsa is a traditional village off the beaten track. You will be assured an authentic rural experience and a warm welcome by its community of self sufficient farmers. This is a place full of nostalgia for a way of life long lost in the west. Here you will see horses and carts and the village shepherd taking the flock out to pasture. Gardens are full of colourful vegetables and life is still rich with skills in foraging, preserving and caring for animals. The cultural life is lively with a traditional band and choir and there are plenty of festivities in the summer months. Guests can visit the cultural display in the village centre and see the crafts made by local women or meet locals while walking round the village. There are wonderful walks through wild flower meadows surrounding the village and the owners have prepared maps for self guided walks. The region has a rich but undiscovered cultural heritage and you can drive to visit one of 3 world heritage sites, or the historic towns of Shumen, Ruse or Veliko Tarnovo. Or join a guided day trip with the owner, also an archaeologist. You may just want to relax and do nothing - this is also the perfect peaceful retreat for that.
