A delightful, well-presented, period cottage offering guests the best of both worlds; an attractive rural location with good walks from the doorstep yet with easy access to Kelso’s excellent amenities just 3 miles away.
The deceptively spacious accommodation is presented in a charming, contemporary country style. The sitting room features a state of the art wood burner (logs are provided), stripped wood floors, sumptuous leather sofas, a fabulous antler ceiling light, pretty lamps and bold fabrics to add a pop of colour. The attractive kitchen is well-equipped with excellent quality crockery and cookware and the adjacent dining conservatory is a delightful spot for leisurely dining whatever the weather.
The three individually-styled bedrooms feature chic country florals, muted tweeds, luxurious White Company bed linen and each has its own immaculately-presented, contemporary bath or shower rooms. The ground floor bedroom and shower room is ideal for less mobile guests.
Outside is a pretty garden to the front and a tiered garden to the rear with an outside dining area and lawned area which provides direct access through a wicker gate to excellent walks in the fields behind the house.
The impressive rod room / store is ideal for fishing parties with rod racks, a chest freezer and sink. There is also plenty of space for the storage of bicycles, golf clubs and outdoor kit.

Balmoral Cottage has a secure, large outside store / rod room with rod racks, chest freezer, tumble dryer and sink which is ideal for fishing parties and the storage of outdoor kit such as bicycles, golf clubs and walking gear.
Garden and grounds
There is a pretty small garden to the front of the house. The attractive rear garden includes a dining terrace accessed from the house with outside furniture. A pretty lawned area at the top of the garden has a gate to the fields behind with excellent walking. The garden is fully-enclosed for the safety of dogs and children.
There is parking for two cars in front of the cottage.
Wi fi and mobile coverage
There is wi fi at the cottage. There is good mobile coverage on most networks.
The beds are made up with high quality White Company Egyptian Cotton bed linen, feather and duck down duvets and pillows. A hair dryer is supplied in each bedroom. Luxurious White Company bath sheets and hand towels are provided for all guests. Guest hand soaps are provided. Logs are provided.
Babies and children
A travel cot and high chair are available on request. The garden is fully-enclosed for children to play.
A welcome pack is provided.
Balmoral Cottage can be taken on a purely self-catered basis, or a cook is available throughout guest’s stay, for breakfasts or dinners only or to provide one-off celebratory meals for a special occasion. A homemade meal delivery is available which is popular for guest’s first night and wine delivery is available in conjunction with renowned wine merchants Corney & Barrow.
Two well-behaved dogs are welcome at Balmoral Cottage. Dogs must be kept to the ground floor and are not allowed in the bedrooms.
Balmoral Cottage is a semi-detached property and sits within a small, peaceful hamlet of cottages. There are open fields to one side and behind.
Auch wenn das Haus von außen einen einen etwas altmodischen Eindruck erweckt, ist es von innen einfach nur toll. Insbesondere die drei Bäder und das Gäste-WC sind sehr modern und geschmackvoll eingerichtet. Auch die Ausstattung der Küche ist sehr umfangreich und nahezu komplett. Als Deutsche vermissten wir nur eine Kaffeemaschine. Aber mit dem manuellen Brühsystem ging es auch. Das Esszimmer in einer Art Wintergarten mit tollem Blick über eine Pferdekoppel und bis in die Berge des Northumberland National Park - einfach traumhaft.
Dazu kam noch der warme Empfang mit einem Präsentkorb und einem gut gefüllten Kühlschrank. So kann der Start in den Urlaub beginnen. Die Vermieterin half uns ganz nett am Telefon, als wir bei der Anreise ein Verständnisproblem mit der kleinen Schlüsselbox hatten, die durch einen Code gesichert, die Haustürschlüssel enthielt.

The hamlet of Nenthorn sits just 3 miles north of the picturesque town of Kelso and enjoys an attractive rural position with commanding views over open countryside towards the Cheviot Hills in one direction and the Eildon Hills in the other. The cottage is extremely well-placed for exploring all the attractions and towns of the central Borders and the many outdoor, fishing and sporting pursuits of the area.
Kelso is a thriving market town set around a charming cobbled square with rich historical features and architecture including the outstanding Abbey ruins, the grandeur of Floors Castle and the splendid Rennie Bridge where the grooves made by the ‘reluctant pennies’ of those crossing the bridge towards the toll-house in the early 1800’s can still be seen along the parapet to this day.
You will find excellent local amenities here and the town is home to some super clothing, gift and interior shops where you can indulge in a little retail therapy, or purchase fresh local produce and holiday provisions from quality independent traders. For dining-out, The Cobbles and Oscars Restaurant are both highly regarded for their friendly atmosphere and excellent food, or for light lunches you will find plenty of tempting treats in the many cafes in the town - including Pharlannes Deli, the Hoot ‘n Cat or the Terrace Cafe at Floors. Alternatively why not enjoy a little bit of food heaven in the newly established Roux Restaurant at the nearby Roxburghe Hotel.
Activities and attractions
Kelso sits right on the confluence of the Rivers Tweed and Teviot and is a much loved destination for salmon anglers who come to experience world-class fishing on the prolific Middle Tweed salmon beats around this area - Rutherford, Makerstoun, Upper and Lower Floors, Junction and Hendersyde are all within a few miles of the property. Fishing can be booked through FishTweed, while Orvis and Tweedside Tackle are both based in the centre of town offering a wealth of advice on river levels, latest catches, permits, tackle and all things fishing and country. The day’s catches can be smoked locally at the nearby Teviot Smokery, or for a little relaxation after the day’s endeavours you will find plenty of congenial fisher chat at Ednam House where you can celebrate......or perhaps commiserate over a wee dram in this renowned fishing establishment!
For golf enthusiasts, Kelso Golf Club is an attractive parkland course resting on the edge of the town, or you can experience a fantastic day-out playing the Roxburghe Championship Course (5 miles), recently voted 6th best course in Scotland by readers of the country’s best selling golf title. There is a pro-shop and PGA golf academy here for those who are new to the game or wish to refine their swing, and if you’re feeling particularly energetic you may decide to finish off your day popping a few clays at the nearby shooting school.
For walking, there are lots of lovely peaceful country walks taking in parkland, woodland and riverside paths right across the area from easy rambles to more extensive hikes in the Cheviot Hills which can be accessed from Yetholm (10 miles). You can join the long-distance walking routes of The Pennine Way and St. Cuthbert’s Way from this point, or alternatively experience some fantastic scenery along the route of the Borders Abbey’s Way, taking in the exceptional remnants of the four 12th century Abbeys at Kelso, Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Melrose. Similarly, the area has cycling trails for everyone from the family friendly routes at Bowmont Forest and Harestanes, to the scenic waymarked trails of the Bordeloop4, Coast & Castles Route & Tweed Cycle Way. If you would prefer to swop two wheels for four hooves, the Nenthorn Equestrian Centre is a well-established school offering riding for all ages and abilities and is based just a few minutes from the property.
For sightseeing, the grand stately homes and castles of Floors, Mellerstain, Manderston, Abbotsford and Thirlestane are all within a short half hour drive where the beautiful artworks, rich architectural detailing and scenic grounds and gardens are guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.
Our local events and festivals provide the perfect excuse for short breaks or friendly get-togethers where you can enjoy National Hunt Racing at Kelso Racecourse, local Antique Fairs and Auctions, the Floors Castle Horse Trials, Point-to-Point Meets, the Borders Book Festival, Walking Festival and Common Ridings.......to name just a few!
A half-hour will take you to the wonderful heritage coastline with miles of deserted golden sands perfect for rest or play, while the cultural city of Edinburgh is just an hour’s drive where you can take advantage of events such as the vibrant Edinburgh Fringe Festival, exceptional Jazz and Blues Festival, or simply a day-out exploring the exquisite historical architecture of this beautiful city.
