This delightful cottage is situated in the centre of the village of Escamps (pronounced Eh-cong), Burgundy, just 2 hours drive on the motorway from Paris or a more leisurely two and a half hours taking the “route national” through the forests of Fountainebleau, past small villages and undulating fields of sunflower and canola. Desjardins Cottage is perfect for a weekend getaway or longer stays where you can relax and experience this quintessential French countryside and all it has to offer.

Escamps is a tiny village with a Romanesque church circa 800, just 14 kms from the impressive gothic cathedral town of Auxerre on the river Yonne and 25kms from the wineries of Chablis and Irancy. The house has two bedrooms, one with queen sized bed and the other 2 singles that can be made up as a second queen. There is also a sofa bed in the lounge room for a 3rd child or friends dropping by.

The cottage itself is 400-500 years old. We believe it may have belonged to a religious order since renovations revealed a tiny habited face on the outside wall. The home is well equipped, warm, comfortable and delightfully decorated in the classic French provincial style. The garden is fully fenced in and secure so parents can feel relaxed while children play!

Information is provided for short trips to neighbouring market towns, wineries, restaurants, important religious sites and historic attractions as well as day trips inviting you to explore villages, caves and castles further afield.

About The Owner

My family and I travel a lot and spend time between France and Australia. I am into jazz and studied voice and composition in Paris for many years. We love art , antique hunting and French food and wine (my favourite are the light reds from nearby Irancy). For food lovers the farmers markets at surrounding towns are a joy to explore and are the best places to find local delicacies.

We have 2 children, a boy who loves history and a little girl who is pony mad and there's plenty of both in the surrounding towns and villages here!

As a host the most important thing for me is that guests find the cottage immaculately clean with crisp sheets and fluffy towels. I make sure the home is prepared for your arrival so you can relax and start enjoying your stay immediately. I have supplied information with ideas of things to see and do nearby and have included plenty of practical hints too such as opening times for boulangeries, supermarkets, chemist etc. There are movies and games for kids of all ages on the TV which is great when they need some quiet, down time at home. Security is important for me and the backyard is enclosed so once you've arrived, and have locked the front door, kids can play happily while parents relax.

When you book, I send a PDF with helpful info re getting to the cottage including one or two tourist attractions you can visit en route.

Desjardins Cottage is situated in such a beautiful part of Burgundy. We are delighted to share the cottage with visitors and strive to make sure you're time in our home is a memorable one!

Why The Owner chose Escamps

Desjardins is the perfect holiday location when visiting all the wonderful attractions nearby including the great 11thC Abbey of Vezelay, the wineries of Chablis and the impressive cathedral town of Auxerre. For the kids, visit Guedelon, a medieval style castle under construction, and just a short drive away. St Fargeau is a pretty castle and in the warmer months there are grand evening performances with knights on horseback re-enacting historical events such as Joan of Arc’s epic battles across the country with dancing and fireworks thrown in. You can make a short trip to Noyers, listed in the top 100 most beautiful villages in France. This little place reminds me of a Van Gogh painting with its wonky ancient houses and pretty surrounds. Take a picnic lunch or go cycling along the banks of the Yonne River and at the end of the day you can return to Desjardins Cottage, take a monsoon shower and relax with a glass of wine from the nearby villages of Irancy or Chablis while the kids play safely in the secure, fenced in yard. The beds are super comfy and you'll wake up restored for a new day of exploring!

What makes this cottage unique

Desjardins Cottage is just 2 hours drive from Paris. Stop off en route to visit the royal chateau of Fontainebleau or my favourite castle... Vaux le Vicomte. Spring is a stunning time of the year with early cherry blossoms and all the antique and "empty the attic" markets happening each weekend. Summer is stunning, warm and humid. Autumn sees some of the best weather and Winter is a delight with Christmas markets and wonderful sessional market fare!

Guestbook comments from the owner

What an amazing 2 weeks we have had in Desjardins Cottage. It feels just like being at ‘home’ except we are in the beautiful French countryside.

We have enjoyed out long walks in every direction leading out from Escamps- discovering beautiful villages, green and gold fields, spring blossoms, churches, chateaux, animals, forests, rippling brooks- a real feast for the eyes. Our long walks have enabled us to sample lots of goodies from the local Chevannes boulangerie as well as Eric Roy’s in Auxerre- YUM!

We have explored many places but our highlight of the trip was our day out with Eric in his vintage Citroen visiting the winefields and cellars of Irancy, St Bris le Vineux and Chablis- AMAZING and highly recommended. He is so knowledgeable and friendly. This has been the most wonderful place to have long sleep ins (much needed), and to take time and enjoythe simple pleasures in life.

Thanks so much Penelope & Karim for sharing your beautiful cottage with us.

Escamp Gite, Yonne in Burgundy

  • 4 of 5

Clean, well equipped and spacious. One of our requirements for a gite is that it is suitable for my wife's level of mobility/disability and in this regard the cottage was well described and exactly suitable for us. The shower for instance was one of the best for someone of disability to use that we have found in holiday lets.

Our only caveat was with the location the village of Escamp it being completely devoid of facilities. But that was made clear in the description and there is a larger village 2km away which has most of the things one needs.

Our stay was too brief

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely property, and fully lives up to, and even exceeds the impression presented in the photographs. Our stay was only 2 nights, as a way to give our kids a taste of a French country-side stay, with the hopes that they will warm to the idea of a longer stay in the future. I think this property would be just fine for our family of four for a longer stay.

Very comfortable appartment

  • 5 of 5

The appartment is very comfortable and well located to explore the area. It is located just a few km from Auxerre. Everything you may need is available and in very good condition. The owner is very responsive, communication is fast and to the point. We enjoyed very much staying in the appartment.

Gîte tout confort avec un petit plus pour la décoration. Tout à été pensé et réalisé avec goût et raffinement. Un jardin très agréable surtout avec le week-end exeptionnement ensoleillé en ce mois de mai 2015. Merci à la propriétaire :)

Chilled, elegant cottage in quaint village

  • 4 of 5

My husband and me recently stayed in this character filled cottage in Burgundy. We didn't realise how lovely it was till we arrived: recently renovated, really thoughtfully appointed and decorated....and with great beds! This place was less a cottage and more a house: it has a practical floorplan, with the all essential separate toilet, and a lovely well equipped kitchen which got a real workout as we love to cook and were really interested in trying the local produce. We highly recommend it.

Beyond Thrilled with this cottage

  • 5 of 5

I must say that we were a little nervous booking a holiday cottage because we have always been a hotel type traveller. Staying at Desjardins Cottage has completely changed our minds. Desjardins was incredibly homely, like you would expect from a cottage but also felt luxurious like a hotel room! I got the impression that the entire cottage has recently been refurbished, so everything is in perfect working order. The beds are outrageously comfortable and the linen was heaven! There are some gorgeous vintage furniture pieces and the home is really well styled, creating the luxe feel! Everything practical is at hand. Washing machine, dryer, kitchen utensils, bath towels, linen, etc! We did a lot of alfresco dining in the gorgeous courtyard, had lots of nice sleep ins due to full shutters closing across the windows, we had an incredible stay. Friends came from London for the weekend and they mentioned that the fold out sofa bed in the lounge room was the best they had slept on! The best thing is that the lounge room can be closed right off if you do use the sofa bed. The region surrounding the cottage is exceptional. Wine, food, scenery, chateaus, the lot! We even did disneyland in a day, and snuck off the Paris for the night! I can't recommend this cottage highly enough. It is safe, sparkling clean and incredibly comfortable. I can't imagine not visiting again. Thank you for having us Desjardins! Your cottage is a true gem, and we feel very fortunate to have experienced it!
