Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Gourgé

Stylish Accommodation with optional dining from an award winning Scottish chef.

COUNTRYSIDE LIVING

Ideally situated in the Poitou Charente, we are based in a beautiful farming hamlet, perfectly located for touring and exploring this little known part of France, and all it has to offer! We are also ideally situated for exploring the wine routes of the Haute Poitou and the Loire Valley. Keen cyclists and walkers will be spoiled by the many routes on offer, including a Petit Chemin de Saint Jacque de Compostelle - right outside your door!

LOCAL PRODUCE

Our aim is to grow and cook as much of our own produce as we can and to utilise the fantastic store cupboard of wonderful organic ingredients from the countryside, and from our neighbours - keeping everything local and fresh.

À MANGER

Upon your arrival you'll be welcomed with a glass of something local and a basket of provisions to help you along until you get to the market. Also, if you wish later, dine in the summer kitchen and eating space ‘La Petite Cuisine’. Menus and prices are displayed daily, and are based on what’s fresh and of the season. Another option is to take advantage of the ‘chef at your door’ service; to make your stay that little more special!

CHARMING KITCHEN AND ALFRESCO DINING SPACE

We are extremely proud of our outside kitchen and eating space - La Petite Cuisine. This is built on the original footprint of an old outbuilding that sadly was beyond rescue. When we were planning what we could do to make our guests’ holidays that more special, we decided to utilise Richard’s core skills of being a chef!

The aim of La Petite Cuisine is to provide our visitors with a unique alfresco dining venue, where yours truly will be found cooking up a storm with produce grown in our own vegetable plots and orchard, but also utilising ingredients foraged or bought from our neighbours. Menus will be based on what’s available, ensuring freshness and quality for our guests. We’re also partial to good old-fashioned BBQs and time honoured French classics. If you fancy a lazy day around the pool or gardens, we are more than happy to fire up the plancha for a special lunch or dinnertime treat! Richard is also very experienced in catering for vegetarians and those with special dietary requirements, including, for example, those following a gluten free diet.

If you fancy something that extra special, why not speak to Richard about the ‘chef at your disposal’ service. Richard will be happy to help you develop a menu for any occasion, and cook it for you! Leaving you to enjoy your holiday, while you have your own private chef for the evening!

POOL AND HOT TUB

Just at the bottom of the orchard, up the old oak beam stairs you will find the above ground heated pool, with open views over the countryside – a real relief on those hot days. We also supply sun chairs and a picnic bench for additional relaxation and alfresco dining. For the grown ups, a real treat, a Swedish log burning hot tub which is perfect for spring and autumn weather when the evenings are less balmy, but also a great benefit after cycling and walking all the routes on our doorstep.

Details for holiday cottage Maison de Maurice - a charming farming cottage dating from 1599!, 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 4, 1 Bathroom

In 2011 we were given the privilege of buying this charming old farm cottage, dating from 1599! Although in a very poor state of repair, we immediately saw the potential of the cottage and we truly wanted to restore it to its former charming self. We hope you agree when you see what all our hard work has achieved!

peace and tranquility

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at maison maurice a couple of weeks ago, the cottage is clean, has everything you need, a fantastically comfortable bed and a lovely shower room. I am in the hospitality industry and feel that most people need the accommodation clean and a good night's sleep, maison maurice ticked these boxes. We also had the use of a hot tub and an above ground swimming pool which was lovely. Richard is warm, welcoming and hospitable, the home made veg and fresh eggs and bread were wonderful.Richard recommended a visit to Oradur sur glane, it took approx 2 hrs to get there but roads are good and it is well worth it. Everthing you could ask for and a bit more, i think you wil be seeing us again Richard .

Everything you need and more..stylish and very comfortable .

  • 5 of 5

Accurately described, located in the very quiet hamlet of Bois Mort. Saint Loup, a few minutes drive away has shops and a market.

The `Maison du Maurice` gite, was very clean, tidy and tastefully furnished throughout. The location is very quiet and rural. The pool was a great bonus.

Richard, the owner, was very friendly and helpful, giving us lots of advice and local information. He also provides a range of excellent home made and local produce like jams and meats.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and recommend `Bois Mort` to anyone wanting a relaxing holiday in the french countryside .

We hope to return.

Thank you Richard.

Regards Andy, Annie and Kate

Authentically traditional with all modern facilities

  • 5 of 5

Our overall impression of Maison du Maurice is as a authentically traditional home, in such a pretty hamlet providing all modern day facilities for folks on holiday. The properties and gardens cared for by the owner,Richard, can only be described as beautifully landscaped and lovingly tended.

Richard is the perfect host which he achieves by mixing perfectly ,being in the background of your holiday day to day, changing to being immediately available when needed, this for example to give information and recommendation on the area, places of interest, etc. A brilliant balancing act.

We used the dining option provided by Richard which we found comparable with high quality restaurants providing us with menus filled with local produce. Richards food was delicious.

We loved our stay and will definitely return.

Masterpiece of a holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had the most memorable stay at A Bois Mort and were truly sad to leave! Owner Richard was incredibly generous with his time, knowledge and attention to detail and made an exceptional addition to our holiday. The gite was bright, airy and spotless and as a passionate cook i was impressed with the comprehensiveness of the kitchen and equipment! Having said that, with the standard of Richards cooking we were more inclined to dine at his own, "Petite Cuisine" as often as possible! Delicious locally sourced produce, homemade with provenance, tradition and sustainability at its heart. We were free to use the gites back garden/terrace and roam the wonderful vegetable garden and fruiting trees which was yet another reflection of the owners passion and attention to detail. We had a 6 month old baby with us also and we were provided with a travel cot which was hugely helpful as they are cumbersome in an already packed car, as well as the option of a bottle steriliser! He really has thought of everything... down to the log burning hot tub! The gite is full of information on the region and Richard provided us with a wealth of experience and knowledge on where to go and where not to go. Recommendation being the best publicity we weren't let down once. We came away truly feeling immersed in the region. I could go on far longer but to be honest i am just counting the days to our next visit! Thank you Richard so much! We cant wait! Harry, Verity & Ottilie

Outstanding accommodation and even better hospital

  • 5 of 5

Looking at the web-site before we travelled our expectations were quite high for Maison Maurice, upon arrival not only were our expectations met but the were far succeeded and through out the week we spent there things would only get better.

The guests:

Myself, 35 my wife 31 and our 14 month old little girl. I spent many years in high end hospitality management and I am quite critical of poor and even average hospitality.

The Gite:

….itself was immaculate and very tastefully decorated. Yet it was the little details that we kept spotting throughout our stay that really made it feel more like an extension of the owners home rather than a self catering property. Its abundantly clear that every inch of this property has been restored and decorated with nothing but love and attention and its shows through as clear as the light of day. It has everything one might need and lots more besides.

The only point I would make is that if your traveling with small kids a quick sweep of the property to remove any items in reach of inquisitive little hands is recommended (it took us all of 3 minutes) and bring a travel stair gate.

Outside was equally beautiful, with the owners veg patch, well maintained grasses and flowers everywhere + the (above ground) swimming pool and wood fired hot tub you couldn’t help but feel like you were in a little piece of heaven which is exactly where you are.

The Owner:

Saving the best for last. As I mentioned I spent many years in high end hospitality and Richard is what you might call a unicorn, so rare that you think people like this don’t exist. He is unbelievably talented as a chef (avail of the open kitchen as often as possible) incredibly enthusiastic about being a host, as hard working as a herd of oxen in south east Asia and one of the kindest most genuine people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. I can only take off my hat to the man and say well done for all you have achieved.

On the night before we left, we were asked to let the owners know if there was anything they could improve on. I’m still trying to think of something…..

Discover the history and beauty of this authentic region in Western France.

Gourgé is a commune in the Deux-Sevres department in the

Poitou-Charentes region in western France. It is 10km (6.2 miles) from Parthenay.

The tiny farming hamlet of Bois Mort is located in the Deux-Sevres department, one of four that make up the Poitou Charente region – the other three being Vienne, Charente and Charente-Maritime.

The Deux-Sevres, sits in the north of the Poitou Charente region, just below the Loire Valley, which makes it an ideal staging post to sample the wines of the Haut-Poitou and the Loire, with the picturesque fairy-tale city of Saumur only a 55 minute drive away.

The Deux-Sevres is an unspoilt, farming area, so in the summer expect sunflower fields, swaying golden wheat and tall lush fields of maize.

We are close to two beautiful villages, Gourgé with its Romanesque church, beautiful ancient roman bridge and old water mill, where you can fish and picnic – it’s also possible to hire horse drawn gypsy caravans at certain times during the summer! Within the village is a small store and bakers. In the opposite direction lies the medieval village of St Loup Sur Thouet, a ‘Petit Cite de Character’, with bars, restaurant, auberge, baker, newsagent / bar tabac and village store. Also in the village is a small chateau and church, with beautiful stained glass windows and interesting history – being linked to two local saints.

We are blessed in this region with a wonderful climate and diverse geography, making it a fabulous place to come and enjoy your holidays, whatever your interests – gastronomy to kayaking, walking, cycling, or simply sitting by the pool and relaxing - it can all be found here!

Notes:
Maison de Maurice, paired with our other gites – Chez Aline and the Old Goat Shed really makes Bois Mort the perfect destination for family get-togethers, but all the gites are also sufficiently independent to ensure complete privacy. There is also space for the children to burn off that bit of extra energy in the separate play area.
