About Robin Sowerby

My wife and I are both teachers, I am a Biologist and my wife is a Primary school teacher. We travelled the world teaching, leaving England with one baby boy and ultimately returning home with two boys ready to go to university. We now live back here full time, my wife teaches and I divide my time between writing and running a local business. I was brought up in this area so I know the region and as a biologist and keen naturalist it is the perfect location for me. As our family grew we needed a larger house so we bought another property 10 minutes away, the region is so picturesque we did not want to move elsewhere. However we all love Challan Hall Mews and could not bear to sell it so we have decided to let others have the benefit of this charming cottage and stunning location.

Robin Sowerby purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Robin Sowerby chose Lancaster district

We bought this house as a beautiful retreat to come back to whilst we worked abroad. The location was perfect; it is so safe we once left a window open when we returned overseas without experiencing a problem. The position is idyllic; within a couple of minutes you can be walking through ancient woodlands, the surroundings are protected as an area of outstanding natural beauty and a variety of different conservation organisations manage nature reserves here.

There are a range of local pubs and restaurants which are very welcoming and friendly so you can get out and enjoy yourself and it is within easy drive of the Lake District, Yorkshire dales and many picturesque villages. The historical city of Lancaster is not too far away and as the village train station is within walking distance you don’t have to drive if you want a night out in town. We would love to welcome you to enjoy this delightful corner of England.

What makes this cottage unique

All the rooms are beamed which can draw you back to a different time and this combined with the tranquillity of the setting allows you to unwind and forget work for a while. Relaxing on the balcony watching the wildlife or just looking at the changing colours of the lake and woodlands as the sun moves across the sky, toasting the sunset with a glass of wine, eventually marvelling at the stars as they fill the sky, these are some of the delights you can experience without leaving.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Such a beautiful setting and place, we loved it. The scenery was breathtaking and the apartment was so nych beter than expected, it had everything we needed to a lovely stay. We have a little girl and there were stair gates for safety which was fab would defiantly stay there again and so close to the lakes. Had a great time waking around the reserve. Was so relaxing and value for money, the only downside I would say is late check in of 4pm and early check out at 10am (which isn't easy with a 3 year old) but Robin was very accommodating a and let us check in at 3 and we left around 10.45. Thanks so much for a lovely stay. X

Lovely little apartment with everything you need for your stay and lovely views over the lake. Lots of walks to do around the area and in good location to get to nearby villages. Definitely worth the visit and will be back again.

What a great place to stay to explore the local area!

  • 5 of 5

Just far enough from somewhere to be in the middle of nowhere which is exactly what we were looking for. The accommodation was clean and quirky. It had everything that we needed. We found some great walks around the area, Silverdale, Arnside and we got the train to Grange over Sands, which was great. We would definitely recommend this place.

Peaceful, remote, relaxing

  • 4 of 5

Its a great little apartment, easy to find despite being in the middle of nowhere - peaceful with lovely views over the nearby lake. It has everything you need for a short stay (we were only there for two nights).

Relaxing holiday retreat

  • 5 of 5

We were really pleased with the holiday cottage, it had everything we needed and was very clean, warm and comfortable. It was helpful to have towels and bed linen provided and the kitchen was equipped with all the utensils we needed. The location was great for walking and it was not far to walk into the village of Silverdale. The village has a couple of nice pubs, café and shop so you can get everything you need. There's also a nice (if small) Indian restaurant. It was a very peaceful stay and just a shame we couldn't book lovely weather to match! Our only comment for improvement would be that, on arrival it would have been nice if there'd been a bit more information available in the cottage about the local area, may be a map to walk into the village and something about the facilities available there. Robin was very helpful with instructions to get into the property and accommodating about our leaving time. We only wished we could have stayed longer.

Challan Hall Mews is a country house situated in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of Silverdale and Arnside. The location is well known for its nature, wildlife and its breath-taking views. This can all be captured from the home's large peaceful balcony which overlooks Lake Hawes Water and plenty of picturesque woodlands and hilltops. Just next to Challan Hall is a pathway through a nature reserve to the beautiful Hawes water, which leads on to the nature reserve of Gait Barrows. Here both rare butterflies and wild flowers are a speciality along with very good bird watching. Within walking distance is the R.S.P.B. bird reserve, often featured on television for its extensive variety of wild life. In addition to the many nature reserves and walks surrounding the property there are plenty of local attractions including Arnside, Morecambe Bay, Silverdale Gold Club and numerous rural villages to visit including Kirby Lonsdale. Not far away are the historic city of Lancaster and the town of Kendal, gateway to the lakes. The Lake District National park is within easy reach and the Yorkshire dales can be visited as a day trip. The area is an ideal rural retreat where you can get away from it all, just relax on the balcony and take in the views over a glass of wine, take in the silence at night apart from the hooting of the owls and be amazed at the star scape which appears overhead. For the more energetic you can walk through the woodlands and diverse landscapes available on your doorstep or cycle along the country lanes. If you wish to explore further afield you can also use this as a base to discover the Lake District or the Yorkshire dales.
