About Eileen Hodgson

MY NAME IS EILEEN AND I MANAGE THE COTTAGE FOR OUR DAUGHTER ALICE WHO IS THE OWNER. SHE LIVES AND WORKS IN LONDON. ALICE BOUGHT THE PROPERTY TO BE RESTORED FROM BARN TO COTTAGE AS IT WAS A HOUSE IN THE 18TH CENTURY. MY HUSBAND AND I LIVE CLOSE TO THE COTTAGE WHICH ALLOWS US TO BE ON HAND TO MANAGE THE PROPERTY AND GARDENS AND TO BE THERE FOR VISITORS WHO HAVE ANY QUIERIES.

I HAVE AN INTEREST IN GARDENING, NATURE AND FOOD. I ENJOY BAKING AND COOKING USING VEGETABLES AND FRUIT FROM OUR GARDEN. I ENJOY BEING CREATIVE AND RESTORING OLD FURNITURE AND BUILDINGS.

I WORK AT CARLISLE HOSPITAL AS A DEPUTY SISTER ON A BUSY ORTHOPAEDIC WARD. I AM LOCAL TO THE CARLISLE AREA ORIGINATING FROM KIRKLINTON WHICH IS EAST OF CARLISLE BUT MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE LIVED HERE FOR 39YEARS.

Eileen Hodgson purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Eileen Hodgson chose Carlisle & North Cumbria

THE BARN WAS AT RISK OF BECOMING DERELICT THEREFORE , ALICE , WHO WAS BORN HERE, WANTED TO RESTORE IT BACK TO A HOUSE. ARCHIVE RESEARCH GAVE HER THE HISTORY OF THE BUILDING. SOME OF THE WALLS HAD TO BE REBUILT AS THEY WERE BUILT OF CLAY- DABBING BUT THE RESTORATION HAS BEEN DONE IN KEEPING WITH THE RURAL CUMBRIAN STYLE. .

Outstanding Property and Amazing Owners

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this cottage end of May for a hiking trip in Lake district. It is less than 30 minutes drive away and there are a lot of supermarkets close by.

On the first day we arrived really late because of the traffic but Richard (the owner) was so understanding that he let us check in late and he stayed awake until 1 am waiting for us. He greeted us with a warm welcome and showed us around the property. It was outstanding, spacious and very very clean. We had a little basket of goodies waiting for us in the kitchen which Eileen (Richard's wife) left for us. She had baked this amazing Victoria sponge cake and i have to say it's the best cake I have ever had in my life. I would go back to the cottage just to have Eileen's cake. It deserves a 5* just like the cottage. Eileen and Richard made us feel like we were home and always made sure we were okay. As cheesy as this may sound, I was a bit sad to leave on the last day as I felt like I was leaving my family. Overall, the stay was PERFECT!! I would highly recommend this property.

Amazing Holiday Cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We came across this lovely cottage through this site while we were looking for a holiday. The reviews were excellent which gave us more assurance. To be honest, our experience was the best we ever had and don’t think I can put them together on words. It was such a nice cottage. Richard and Eileen were the best hosts we could imagine of. There was a lovely hamper for us at the cottage with homemade cake and short bread. They also provided us with bread, milk and a bottle of Prosecco. The cottage had everything we needed and child-friendly. Rooms were lovely neat and clean. We really recommend this place and looking forward to visiting again soon.

Lovely cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful family holiday here. Our hosts Eileen and Richard made us feel very welcome with the most delicious homemade cake and a bottle of prosecco on arrival!

Our hosts have been a great barbecue company and spoiled our little one with a free range duck eggs. Also we have been happy to use fresh vegetables from their allotment for our cooking.

A wonderful home from home, everything about this cottage is just perfect, you couldn't ask for a cleaner, more welcoming, comfortable cottage than this!

Very clean. Well laid out. Beautifully decorated. Fabulous setting and wonderful owners!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing time staying at Lily Cottage. It has to be the best cottage we have ever stayed in. The children were really happy playing safely in the yard and they loved the ducks. The cottage is in a beautiful, quiet, rural location but close enough to Carlisle, Scotland and the Lake District for days out. (We recommend trying clip n climb in Maryport).

The cottage is very sweet. It is really clean and beautifully decorated. We are a family of 5. There was plenty of room for us all.

Thank you Eileen and Richard for being wonderful hosts. We will always have great memories of our stay 😊?

Beautiful cottage, we can't wait to go back!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Lily Cottage. It was easy to find and in a quiet location. The cottage is beautiful inside, probably the best we've ever stayed at. The garden is lovely too and we enjoyed seeing the ducks every day. Richard and Eileen were so welcoming and friendly and the welcome pack was a real treat. You will find yourself planning your next trip to Lily Cottage before you've even left!

The cottage is situated in the linear village of Kirkbampton only two miles from the Solway coast which is an area of outstanding natural beauty, famous for bird watching, views, history and Spectacular sunsets. The area is rural and ideal for cyclists and walkers being just two miles from part of the Hadrian's wall national trail and the start of the west coast cycle way.

Haaf net fishing is exclusive to the Solway coast which is a fishing practise brought here by the Vikings. The fishermen use the flow of tides on both the English and Scottish sides of the Solway to catch Salmon and Trout. It is the only place in the world that this type of fishing is sill done. Visitors to the cottage could enjoy the experience of Haaf net fishing which is organised through one of the local pubs in the area.

Other interesting features of the Solway include, the history of the iron bridge which crossed over from Bowness to Scotland. There is also the monument of Edward 1st which stands on the marsh at Burgh By Sands.

There are nature reserves within walking distance from the cottage, some of which have activities for children and bike hire.

The cottage is within an easy forty minute drive to the Lake District. The historic city of Carlisle is only a ten minute drive away. Carlisle has the interest of the austere and splendid castle which has dominated Carlisle for nine centuries, the beautiful cathedral, Tullie house museum, the Citadel drum towers which were originally erected in 1541 by Henry the VIII ,shopping, bars , restaurants , and night clubs.

Scotland is within easy access either by road or train. Edinburgh and Glasgow are only short in- expensive journeys away by train (one hour) or around a two hour drive away by car.

The cottage is cosy, peaceful and comfortable with security and privacy. it has been lovingly restored to a high specification in keeping with the local area. There are beautiful north views of the coast and the hills of the Scottish borders beyond. The travel links are within easy access as there is a good road structure to enable visitors to travel and explore this interesting and unspoiled area.
