We found the property to be well fitted with all the rooms comfortable. Kitchen was excellent with all required services up to date and well supplied. Eileen provided a welcome hamper to get us started and a very tasty chocolate cake. We were made to feel very welcome and I felt nothing would be too much for them. Located close to Carlisle the property was well placed to explore the local and wider area. We will definitely make a return visit.
Ours was an emergency stay with issues at our house. we booked bery last minute. Eileen was lovely and accomodating. nice modern fittings and quiet location. beautiful views and location. definitely would recommend. good value for money.
Lily Cottage was perfect.. nice kitchen for wife's cooking, wi-fi for two teenage girls, secure parking inside the property, tv/dvd for our night's scary movie time, and bbq after a very tiring day out which doubled as fire pit. Owners HRH Richard & Eileen and next door friends welcomed us on our first day and we had bbq then followed by beers and wine circling around the fire pit. A great day to start a week's holiday in Lake District!
Carlisle (city centre around 10miles) is a historical place, where you can visit Carlisle Castle and few other attractions, and supermarkets for your shopping needs. Take the scenic view by train to Skipton (Carlisle-Settle route). Hadrian's wall is not to be missed.. best place to start is Housestead's where the Roman fort was and the only part of the wall where people can walk on. and hike, climb Lake District wherever you fancy. We even took the girls to swim in Ullswater lake.
This was our second summer in Lake District and planning to go back during the winter to see frosted mountains for a change and, hopefully, stay at Lily Cottage.
We have just returned from Lily Cottage after a seven night stay. The cottage was very comfortable, spacious, clean and there was everything provided, including ample towels, storage, utensils, local information, and so much more, to make our stay enjoyable. We filled our days with touring the Lake District,Carlisle,( great shops and market, lovely atmosphere, however the Castle is a little disappointing as most rooms are empty,if you visit buy the guide book to make it more interesting )! Dumfries and Galloway. We also enjoyed local nature reserve walks in the mornings, taking picnics then returning to the cottage to relax in the evenings.Beautiful views and sunsets, and watching the ducks in the yard was very entertaining ! Eileen and Richard are wonderful hosts, very friendly, informative with local info and the welcome hamper was a lovely gesture. We can't thank them enough for making our stay very memorable,we didn't want to leave ! We would highly recommend this property to family and friends. Thanks again Eileen and Richard.
Had a wonderful relaxing visit to Lily cottage, which is deceptively large and spacious. Easy road links to and from Carlisle or the North Lakes.
Eileen met us on arrival, gave us 'the tour', and left us with a generous welcome basket which was much indulgent and much appreciated. (the home made scones were delicious)
The cottage was clean and well maintained, 3 double bedrooms upstairs allow for plenty of company (should you want it) the beams in the ceiling just add character and set the bedrooms off. At 6' 2" I didn't hit my head, so don't feel this is a small cramped cottage at all. (the photos don't do it justice)
Had a great time exploring the area and taking in a few distilleries close by.
A return visit is definitely on the cards
We have had a wonderful stay at this excellent property. It was very tastefully decorated which gave it great character and it had everything we needed.
The owners Eileen and Richard were excellent warm hosts.
We loved sitting outside the lovely sheltered area of the cottage listening to the swallows soaring overhead and popping to visit the running ducks in their pond.
The property is well sighted and it was possible to visit the Scottish borders ,Kielder and the northern lakes. There are numerous nature reserves in the areas too.
The quite lanes near the cottage were lovely to cycle .
I must mention the welcome hamper and Eileen's great scones.
We intend returning to this lovely property for future holidays. We especially want to return when all the winter geese return to the area.
The cottage is situated in the linear village of Kirkbampton only two miles from the Solway coast which is an area of outstanding natural beauty, famous for bird watching, views, history and Spectacular sunsets. The area is rural and ideal for cyclists and walkers being just two miles from part of the Hadrian's wall national trail and the start of the west coast cycle way.
Haaf net fishing is exclusive to the Solway coast which is a fishing practise brought here by the Vikings. The fishermen use the flow of tides on both the English and Scottish sides of the Solway to catch Salmon and Trout. It is the only place in the world that this type of fishing is sill done. Visitors to the cottage could enjoy the experience of Haaf net fishing which is organised through one of the local pubs in the area.
Other interesting features of the Solway include, the history of the iron bridge which crossed over from Bowness to Scotland. There is also the monument of Edward 1st which stands on the marsh at Burgh By Sands.
There are nature reserves within walking distance from the cottage, some of which have activities for children and bike hire.
The cottage is within an easy forty minute drive to the Lake District. The historic city of Carlisle is only a ten minute drive away. Carlisle has the interest of the austere and splendid castle which has dominated Carlisle for nine centuries, the beautiful cathedral, Tullie house museum, the Citadel drum towers which were originally erected in 1541 by Henry the VIII ,shopping, bars , restaurants , and night clubs.
Scotland is within easy access either by road or train. Edinburgh and Glasgow are only short in- expensive journeys away by train (one hour) or around a two hour drive away by car.
The cottage is cosy, peaceful and comfortable with security and privacy. it has been lovingly restored to a high specification in keeping with the local area. There are beautiful north views of the coast and the hills of the Scottish borders beyond. The travel links are within easy access as there is a good road structure to enable visitors to travel and explore this interesting and unspoiled area.
