Perfect Little Nantucket House
My family rented this so that other family members could visit us on the island. It was perfect. the rate was good, the house was a perfect fit, and the location great too.
Happy to hear it worked out so well for your family visit. Really appreciate the kind words about the house, especially from someone like you who knows the island well. Thank you for your business and your support!
Planning logistics for your visit? Consider whether to bring or rent a car or see the island by bike and Wave bus.
Nantucket is best enjoyed without a car. Roads are congested. Parking at popular spots like restaurants and grocery stores is like a scene out of “Mad Max”. Car rentals are wicked expensive. Summer car ferry reservations need to be booked months in advance and start at over $400 round-trip.
Here are some practical considerations for a great car-free island visit.
Food and Drink
Full disclosure: Fishers Landing is not within walking distance of any restaurants or food stores. After dropping your luggage at the house, you may want to head right for the grocery store via Wave bus or taxi.
•For groceries etc. it’s good to call ahead to organize a taxi pickup to get your goodies back to the house. http://nrtawave.com/onisland/taxis.php
o Stop & Shop, 31 Sparks Ave – large, full-service store; adjoining adult beverage store
o Bartlett’s Farm, 33 Bartlett Farm Rd – small store, farm stand / organic / prepared food
•Closest restaurant is Millie’s, 2 miles by bike or a short bus ride away.
•Wide variety of restaurants are available in town (~30 minutes by Wave bus)
•Cisco Brewery offers a tasting room, tours, and food trucks. Take the Wave bus into town and then catch the free Cisco shuttle out to the brewery.
Wave Bus http://nrtawave.com/
From the house it's a short walk (1000 feet) to the WAVE Bus - Madaket Loop bus stop
•Runs every 30 minutes on Madaket Route between 7 a.m. & 11 p.m.
•Connects to routes throughout the island
•Pay per ride or buy a multi-day pass
Biking on Nantucket
The island has a terrific network of wide bike paths. http://nrtawave.com/onisland/index.php
•Taking a passenger ferry from Hyannis to Nantucket? You can bring a bike with you for a fee.
•Prefer to rent? Several rental shops advertise on the web. Call in advance to reserve a bike.
Lengthy ride planned? Bring water and snacks. Restaurants and shops are scarce away from town.
A Few Ideas for Fun Stuff to Do
•Lighthouse and Natural History Tour – tour of Great Point is a bit pricey but well worth it to understand the allure of this magical island
•Nantucket Whaling Museum - Terrific museum!!
•Farmers and Artisans Market -- Saturday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. in town.
•Beaches nearest the house
o 40th Pole Beach (one of the nicest on the island) is a 1 mile walk from the house through a nature preserve. [Note: it is a workout to walk through the deep sand as you approach the beach.]
o Madaket beach (most beautiful sunsets in New England!) is 2 miles away by bike or WAVE bus.
