This is an ideal property for single person seeking retreat to write or study, or couple with one or two children. Truly traditional Greek cottage, modified to be simple but comfortable, on the edge of a lively, friendly village, with stunning views and lovely walks.12 minute car-journey to coast and beaches. The house comprises a small kitchen, living-room, bathroom and comfortable beds in two small bedrooms. A large roof space, with easy access and pergola for shade, offers another living-space, suitable for relaxing and dining. Car parking is extremely easy winter and summer. Access to the bustling town of Makrigialos and its plentiful facilities and beaches is via the mountain road from the village, a 12 minute car-ride.
Caryl and I bought this cottage spontaneously in 2007 after hiking up to Agios Stefanos from the sea and falling in love with the authenticity of the place, and the amazing views. We are both teachers, me a retired one. We spend some time at Easter there and longer in the summer. Over four years we have done up simply and comfortably the interior of this typical Greek house and added a lovely roof space with a pergola for shade, and we eat most evenings there, enjoying the quiet, the views and the stars! We have looked for a long time for somewhere where we can get away from it all, read, write, take photos, walk, swim and not watch tele. This is it.
Richard Joyce purchased this house in 2007
We have both had an on-going love affair with the Greek islands for years. We wanted somewhere with easy proximity to the sea but remote enough to be peaceful as well as being authentic. We found it in Agios Stefanos and the location of the property, at the edge of the village, gives us privacy when we do not feel like socialising. However the village is very social; there are four cafes dotted around it, lovely local people, as well as quite an international feel to the place. The walks from the village are plentiful and various. It did not take us long to decide on this place.
We enjoy the privacy, the friendliness, the views, the simplicity.
"We just wanted to let you know what a lovely, relaxing and inspirational time we have had at Agios Stephanos. The scenery, people, beaches, tavernas, food, warmth, the pace of life.....we soaked it up like sponges and came back truly revived.
Thank you for sharing your cottage with us."
We had such a lovely time staying in this delightful cottage!
The village of Agios Stefanos is extremely charming, nestled into the mountainside overlooking the rugged south coast. We found the local Greeks and Europeans to be very helpful and friendly, offering useful local knowledge and making us feel very welcome indeed. The cottage itself is on the edge of this old village, offering privacy and accessibility. It is extremely well equipped and comfortable. The Mosquito Blinds ensure the inside remains free of bugs, although there are very few mosquitoes around anyway, so we could enjoy evenings on the roof looking at the stars and stunning surroundings.
There is also plenty to do and see in the area - Vraiko Cave outside Pefki village offers an impressive and extensive stalagtite/mite series of interlocking chambers. We felt like explores discovering this gem for the first time, as there is no lighting/walk-ways etc (or entry charge). The folk museum, mountaintop church and Gorge Walk around Pefki are also great activities to do when you're not exploring the various sandy or rocky beaches. These are quite different from each other - some good for snorkelling (dragon's cave near Kalo Nero) and others better for younger children, such as the main beach at Makrigialos Beach, which is sandy with shallow calm water close to parking and the town facilities.
We also enjoyed some days simply relaxing at the cottage and reading some of the interesting books from the cottage 'mini library'. We were particularly grateful for the wealth of information contained in the Visitor Book at the cottage, packed with helpful tips from a wide range of appreciative visitors.
We very much hope to come here again!

A 12 minute drive will bring you to the main beach in Markrigialos. Makrigialos beach is shallow and specially suitable for young children. Two adjacent beaches have deeper (blue flag) water and are less crowded. All beaches have good tavernas. There are numerous other beautiful and more secluded beaches worth exploring. 2 kilometers away is the adjacent village of Pefki, including an excellent taverna and Pefki gorge. Makrigialos, the main coastal town, is 6 km away and has every modern facility: banks, estate agents, supermarkets, hotels etc. More or less every facility you may need can be found at Makrigialos. The two large nearby cities of Ierapetra and Sitia are each a 40 minute drive away, and have lively markets on Saturdays and Tuesdays. Agios Nikolaos - restaurants, coastline, history - is approx one hour. Special beach of Xerocambos is a one hour drive, as is Dead Mans gorge at Kato Zakros.
There are numerous gorges to walk in the area. The resort of Mirtos is worth a visit. For those interested in astronomy, Agios Stefanos itself has a professional astronomer who offers star-gazing evenings on request. There are also art courses available from the same place in the village.
