About the property

Weir Cottage: Private Lakeside Gite In Idyllic Location. A Great Place To Relax!

At Gites de Laprade we are focused on providing you with your ideal holiday in this outstanding area of France, whether it is total relaxation you are looking for or a more energetic time, then we can certainly help you get what you want. The Limousin is famous for it's forests and lakes and we have both here at Gites de Laprade, our location in the Haute Vienne region, is quite unique, the river Couze which surrounds our property, runs quietly by the gite and feeds our 2 acre lake (unfortunately this means the location is unsuitable for children), this is well stocked with carp up to 35lb+ and colourful Koi carp, maybe you could try your hand at a bit of fishing, we are also happy to welcome your dog. This beautiful area abounds with wildlife, deer, wild boar and buzzards are easily spotted and the mix of forests and lakes make for perfect walking, cycling and bird-watching. If you are a budding artist then this is also the perfect area, it was certainly good enough for Fred Yates, he lived in our local village of Rancon until his death in 2009.

Lounge/Diner/Kitchen ~ this lovely open space has a large sofa and chair, TV/DVD with English channels, dining table and chairs; kitchen area is fully equipped and there are stunning views of the lake and the river from the four windows in this area. The bedroom, with lake view has a double bed and storage. The bathroom has a shower, toilet and vanity unit. Outside there is parking space for your car and the essential BBQ, table and chairs. You will also have use of our above ground pool and hot tub, also the rowing boat and kayak.

About Taunya Smith

We are, Brian and Taunya Smith, a couple from the North of England, now living permanently in France. We had a small hill farm in the Penines in West Yorkshire and, as Brian wanted to take early retirement, we decided to move!!!!

We would appreciate the opportunity to welcome you to share our 'Little piece of Paradise'.

Taunya Smith purchased this cabin in 2007

Why Taunya Smith chose World

When we decided on France, Brian's only demand was that he had a lake to fish in. This house more than fulfils his wishes as, our house is actually built on the lake and, we are surrounded by a river.

It obviously fulfils our guests wishes as well as we have lovely people we now call friends, who visit us time after time.

What makes this cabin unique

We didn't originally plan to have gites but, this property came with two buildings, perfect for our friends and family to stay in. So, we did the renovations and now we love welcoming our family and friends old and yet to meet, to our beautiful, tranquil home!!

Holiday at Balldent

This is a very relaxing place to stay if you want complete quiet, lovely lake to fish on or just to relax around, I do feel however that the Gite or cabin could do with some comfyness the sofa is very low and well used as is the bed and unfortunately having arthritus we had a very hard job to get up from the sofa as it's bounce has really depleted, also the bed, the hosts were lovely and welcoming even though we had the wrong instructions of how to get to them, but was quickly corrected by Tanya by meeting us and taking us there, this review is not personal in anyway but feel that if these things are not mentioned then how would anyone know, some people don't mind being uncomfortable, but as we have got older we do enjoy having somewhere comfy to retreat to especially in such a remote location, but on saying this we did enjoy our week here

Excellent for our needs

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at was delightful and perfect for our two small dogs.

The Gite was cosy and well equiped with everything needed.

We had bedding towels lots of hot water, TV with DVD and a selection of DVDs to watch and even some books. Waiting for us on arrival was a French stick butter cheese ham milk and a bottle of wine, perfect and very thoughtful. The loveliest of all was the sound of running water all around the Gite and the most picturesque scenes from all of the Windows, never stayed anywhere before with such lovely views.

Looking out the front of the Gite is a lake laden with huge carp and pleasant walks around it when the fish can be fed with any left over bread.

Tanya and Brian were very welcoming and we were welcomed with a drink and some friendly chat with advice about where to eat and places to visit.

There were some interesting places not too far from the Gite and when we weren't out and about we were able to relax in the quiet and tranquil outdoor area of the Gite, complete with a barbecue where all was provided in the way of utensils and coals.

We were offered use of a pool and hot tub however we didn't use any of these but they were available.

This Gite is in a beautiful spot away from it all but near enough to places for interesting visits. Would recommend this as a get away from it all break somewhere to wind down and recharge your batteries.

Lac St Pardoux
Car: necessary

We are in the 87, Haute Vienne area of the Limousin. The area is famous for it's forests and beautiful countryside and, of course it's lakes. For lots of info about the Limousin, please check out 'I Love Limousin' website.

There are two famous lakes in the area, about 20 minutes away is Lac St. Pardoux which is a popular holiday destination with beaches, jungle swings, concerts and fireworks and, all the usual water sports available. Further afield, on the Haute Vienne/Creuse border, is the immense 1000 hectare Lac de Vassiviere again worth a trip for water sport and nature enthusiasts and also the dining cruises which I can book for you if you would like me to. About 5 minute walk from our gites is the river Gartempe, a favourite with locals and visitors alike for fishing and canoeing, you will enjoy walking along it's banks, also our own river Couze, to see the wonderful wildlife, there are wild boar and deer, the trees abound with birds both large and small.

We are able to arrange bicycle hire for you if that is of interest, the bikes are delivered to us here at Gites de Laprade, complete with helmets, locks and repair kit, with no charge for delivery from

The famous II World War martyr village of Oradour sur Glane is somewhere that is well worth the short trip to visit, a place you won't forget once you have been.

The city of Limoges is famous for it's porcelain and has a superb historic centre with timbered shops , winding cobbled streets and houses which survived the war-time bombs, it is also on the pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostella and has a stunning Cathedral and art deco train station.

There is the superb old town of Chauvigny with it's ruined mediaeval castle where you can watch the falconers flying a large variety of birds from Storks and Condors to Barn owls and Macaws, truly a visit not to be missed.

These are just a taste of what is on offer here, there are so many other places to see, too many to list here but, in the gite you will find a file with lots more places to visit all with maps and directions. But, if you need any help with your itinerary, just ask and we'll do all we can to help, we want you to fall in love with this stunning area, just as we did.
