Belle Joli' Winery (made in South Dakota) has a tasting room in Vanocker Canyon--up the road from here, about 15 minutes away. Their Sparkling House has an outside patio where you can enjoy their red, white and sparkling wine selections.
We also have a renovated, historic log cabin, sitting on another five acres, which may be viewed on our website by clicking 'more information' at the bottom of this page or by checking VRBO listing #351778. Rates at our log cabin begin at $175/night. Children love the loft there.
Our private cottage, sitting on five acres, offers all of the comforts of home, with a small stream meandering through the property and surrounded by beautiful hills, trees and wildlife. After spending your days seeing all of the sights that the Black Hills have to offer, you will enjoy returning to this tranquil setting and relaxing on the patio or the front porch. Our property was recently chosen as part of an Arctic Cat promotional DVD and brochure.

We have lived and worked in the Black Hills for over 35 years, where we have built our own home as well as two vacation homes--a log cabin and our new cottage. Each place sits on its own five acre parcel. Wolfgang has constructed many trails and bridges in the Black Hills (eight on the Mickelson Trail) while he contracted with the State of South Dakota and the U.S. Forest Service. There is a link on our personal website titled "Wolfgang's Trails" where you can view a slideshow of the projects Wolfgang has done.
Wolfgang & Kathleen Schmidt purchased this cottage in 2004
We chose the beautiful Nemo area after spending many hours looking for an ideal place to live in the Black Hills--it reminds Wolfgang of the Black Forest in Germany. We love the privacy in Vanocker Canyon as well as the convenience to everything in the Black Hills.
Our properties are centrally located to all attractions--northern and southern hills as well as the major cities. You will enjoy the solitude of being bordered by National Forest land as well as all of the wildlife that lives on and around our property. Vanocker Canyon area was also chosen by Game, Fish & Parks to bring in elk to this area. The unique benefit of choosing either our log cabin or new cottage is the privacy--each place sits on its own five acres and there are no other cabins around; we are not within a development.
Please don't forget to view the slideshow on the 'Home' page of our website, which can be accessed if you scroll down about 5-6 lines where it says 'Links to More Information: Click Here - Little Elk Cabin & Cottage'.
We booked this beautiful cottage on our way to Yellowstone. It met all of our expectations and then some! Our next trip to the Black Hills will definitely include staying here again, but for a longer time. The cottage is central to every place we planned to visit and driving thru beautiful scenery to and from every attraction made it special. The wildlife around the cottage was entertaining to watch, and the owners were helpful with any questions we had during our stay. You will be glad you booked this nice rental--we were!
We were a party of 4 adults. This was a great location and the cottage was everything we had hoped it would be. We would stay there again.beautiful inside and outside. This was our first experience with VRBO and it was all good!
We loved the cottage and being in the black hills, what a wonderful setting. The cottage was clean and had everything we needed for our stay.
We are glad we chose Little Elk Cottage for our brief stay in the Black Hills. We enjoyed the comfort and quality of the Cottage and its nice furnishings. At the last minute we had some old friends accept our invitation to join us in the Cottage. What a very nice place to enjoy conversation and old memories with special friends. The 5 acre setting is excellent and very well maintained, perfect for relaxing in a very clean and well-kept Cottage. We enjoyed watching the turkeys and deer wonder through. We appreciated the welcoming and follow through of Kathleen and Wolfgang to make sure we had everything we needed for our stay.
We were looking for a quiet get-away and we found it in this beautiful cottage. Kathleen & Wolfgang have taken great care in decorating & maintaining the cottage so it is very well-appointed and clean. It is secluded with a huge yard, so the only thing you see/hear is the wildlife. We found it very easy to get to local attractions in the area, but really just wanted to enjoy the solitude and views this beautiful place provides. Dalton lake is just a few minutes up the road, where we had great success fishing for trout! No doubt we will be back for a longer stay.
Well equipped cabin uniquely located on 5 acres away from the road. Easy access to all the Black Hills attractions especially a beautiful drive to Sturgis. Very comfortable and easy to cook in we wonderful views.
Nearby Dalton Lake is stocked with trout every Spring. It is a great spot to fish or take a leasurely hike in adjacent Little Elk Canyon. Wonderland Cave is just up the road and is one of the most beautiful crystal caves in the Black Hills. They have hourly tours, as well as a nice gift shop, where you will be sure to find a souvenir to take home as a reminder of your visit to this area.
