About Maica Fernandez and Francis Hoare

I came to Menorca to look after my elderly parents who had retired out here and then fell in love not only with this beautiful island but also with the Spanish nurse who helped me look after them!! We're now married with a teenage son and I work as a tour guide. I founded the Jeep Safari Menorca company, which though successful I decided to sell to have more time with my family. I also work with the new owner as a driver-guide.

Maica Fernandez and Francis Hoare purchased this villa in 2000

Why Maica Fernandez and Francis Hoare chose Alaior

This used to be our home, but when we decided to move to the lovely village of Alaior to be closer to our son's school and to work, we decided to keep it on as a holiday let. I used to spend many fantastic holidays here and my wife and I love it when our guests also have a great time here.

Menorca is a beautiful island, and besides that it's tranquil and very very safe.

What makes this villa unique

This house has that unique home from home feel about it, which so many holiday lets lack. My wife enjoys decorating and gardening and she made the house so nice for all of the family.

Apart from that it enjoys it has a great private swimming pool, a lovely garden, spectacular views and is in a quiet area of the resort yet within an easy stroll of the centre.

A relaxing and enjoyable holiday home

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I stayed here during the first two weeks of April. The owners were very helpful during the booking process to answer any questions and this continued during our stay. The owner met us on our arrival and showed us all the details, which was welcome.

The house was very clean and tidy and everything worked as it should have done. The beds were very comfortable. Bed sheets and towels were changed at the weekend and the pool was regularly cleaned. A new washing machine was useful too.

As we cooked the majority of our meals in the house, the well-equipped kitchen

was really appreciated. The view from the roof terrace to the sea was good and enabled some lovely sunset photographs.

We loved sitting on the swing chair on the patio as well as relaxing by the pool. As we visited in April, the water in the swimming pool was cold (we had been pre-warned about this) but during the second week, with temperatures in the low 20’s we were able to use it to an extent. If we got cold, there was a constant supply of hot water for a warming shower afterwards.

Cala En Porter was quiet during our visit, which was what we wanted. The streets were quiet and the atmosphere was very relaxing. With our hire car, (we used Poppy Car Hire, good value and excellent service), we found it easiest to go to the nearest supermarket in Mahon which was only a 15 minute drive. The local supermarkets are fine for emergencies but are pricier and less well stocked. They are a ten-minute walk from the house.

The house made an excellent base to visit the rest of the island and it was a really relaxing place to stay if we didn’t feel like going out. The house was very comfortable and with just the two of us, we never felt cramped and had plenty of spare space. The furniture is good quality and suited to the property. The awning over the interior dining room window was welcome as the sun was strong in the afternoon and leading up to the sunset.

Overall, we feel we made an excellent decision to stay here and really enjoyed what it had to offer. The owners have worked hard to make this the place it is. We would happily recommend this to anyone thinking of visiting Menorca.

A real home from home

  • 5 of 5

The villa is exactly as described. It is deceptively big and was clean, well maintained and well equipped. It is situated in a quiet residential area but only a 10-15 minute walk to the centre and the amenities. The pool area is delightful. There are numerous plants in pots and beds, a lawned area and plenty of sunbeds. It is really well cared for. There is also a swing seat which was really comfortable and sitting there was a pleasure. It was quiet and very relaxing. Our flight was arriving late on a Saturday night but Francis offered to get some provisions in and was there to greet us at the villa and show us round. He was thoughtful and helpful and always willing to help with tips and advice. It was a lovely holiday and we would not hesitate to return here some day. We would also not hesitate to recommend the villa - it's a real home from home!

Wonderful time in this beautiful place

  • 5 of 5

The property was immaculate. Everything was clean, tidy, organised and just as you would expect thoutful and caring hosts to have it. The pool was lovely and clean and the surrounding area clearly safe so for a family with young children - perfect! The only problem we all had was that the holiday came and went all too quickly but we all relaxed and felt very refreshed when we returned to England. Francis was most helpful whilst we were there, providing maps, clear directions and also advice as to good places to visit. He and his wife clearly take pride and care in what the do and at no point did we feel unwelcome! Thank you both for allowing us to come and stay and we definitely put this top of our list of places we have stayed compared to other properties like this. We hope to come back again one day!

A lovely villa with a lovely homely feel

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely big villa and all 8 of us enjoyed it for one week (4 adults & 4 children). It's big enough to have your own space should you need it for 5 minutes.

A lovely big kitchen with all the pots, pans and utensils that you need to make a family meal.

Lots of chairs so you always had somewhere to sit.

Comfy beds (that's a MUST for me with back problems). Big fridge and full size freezer if you wish to do a big shop. Best places to eat in October were Samoa, and Sa Paisa. In July we preferred EL Pulpo but it was closed in October.

The beach was still nice and warm but a little bit windy, that did help dry our wet washing though!

All in all we enjoyed our stay in this villa and Francis and Maria are great hosts and very trustworthy if you are thinking of booking after reading this. This was our 4th visit to Cala En Porter.

Great accommodation for our requirements (2 families of four). Very clean and good homely feel.

  • 4 of 5

We all really loved the island and took the time to visit a good few landmarks and sights as well as enjoying the beach. October is quiet, which suited us. Francis was an excellent host who gave us great tips on where to visit, what too see and where to shop. He has fantastic knowledge of the island. The weather was a little mixed but we saw plenty of sunshine and spent a good deal of time swimming in the sea. The pool was a bit cold for the adults but the kids loved it. Car hire was cheap at this time of year and we found the roads very easy to drive on and getting to places never took more than 45mins.

A fantastic villa experience.

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic holiday at Francis and Maica's lovely quiet and private villa with eight members of our family. I've never seen my grandchildren in a swimming pool so much . Some nights they were in it till 10 at night. The villa was so clean and tidy and Francis and Maica regularly came round to check if every thing was ok. We did not seem to want for anything. Lovely restaurants easy walking distance and even the supermarket delivered everything promptly and for free! The photos on the website were entirely accurate and Calan Porter itself with its lovely sandy beach and its very good restaurants exceeded our expectations. Checkout the Tapas by the beach and El Pulpo (fantastic food and good service) Samoa (good food and poor service) just to name three restaurants.

Thankyou Francis and Maica for the use of your villa.

All the very best Roger and Elaine Pinless and family.

Car: not necessary

The beautiful beach of Calan Porter is very safe with crystal clear water, within a cliff lined cove at the end of a deep valley. It is 3 minutes drive or about 15 minutes walk (including steps) from the villa.

The centre, about 10 minutes walk, has a wide range of restaurants and bars, with different types of entertainment and also childrens' games areas. There are various supermarkets which can provide free delivery service if required.

5 minutes walk away is what is perhaps the world's most beautiful disco: the Xoroi caves, situated in caves half way down the cliffs, which is also open during the day for visits and in the evening they have a chill out session with views of the sun setting over Majorca.

However the villa itself is very quiet. The music from the disco cannot be heard at all. There is a nice countryside walk to the nearby idyllic Calas Coves, the 'cove of the caves'.

By bus you can reach Mahon which has a open air market twice a week. It also boasts the second biggest natural harbour in the world. You can take a boat trip around the beautiful harbour, stroll along the quay-side packed with yachts and have a drink or a meal at one of the numerous water-side bars and restaurants.

In high season there is also a bus service to the pretty local village of Alaior which has an evening handicraft market accompanied by live music in the streets.

Menorca is a biosphere reserve, very unspoilt and there are many beautiful beaches and countryside walks to enjoy. The local jeep safari can pick you up at the house and take you off the beaten track to discover some of the hidden jewels of the island.

Menorca is a small island so if you choose to hire a car nowhere is more than an hour away. Moreover driving is easy as the roads are in good condition and there is little traffic.

By car you can visit the water parks, go on boat trips, play golf, go wind-surfing, diving, see the spectacular horse show and in summer there are often colourful and traditional local festivals which are great fun.

There are many places of interest to visit such as Monte Toro mountain from where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the island, the former capital Ciutadella (a national monument), the delightful fishing village of Fornells, prehistoric monuments, fortresses and charming villages.
