Overview

About the property

All Amenities incl Free WIFI. A Quiet Location w/Views, 8 mins from the Beach.

Villa Margaret is a delightful residence that instantly appeals. Situated off a quiet rural track, with only 2 well-screened neighbouring houses, and surrounded by picturesque woodland comprising pine, carob and olive trees, this is a holiday home that will charm lovers of both nature and tranquillity alike. Impressive views to the majestic White Mountains in the south, and the sparkling sea in the north, complete this restful setting. Despite the peace and privacy, this lovely property is only 300m from the well stocked village store in the traditional hamlet of Xirosterni, 3km from the tavernas and amenities in the quaint villages of Vamos and Gavalohori, and only 6km from Almyrida’s sandy beaches and crystal clear sea.

Superbly appointed on the top floor, the roomy open-plan living/dining/kitchen area takes full advantage of the striking views. This L-shaped living room is warm and inviting with a large and comfy corner couch, cushions and curtains - all made from colourful earth-toned fabrics. The contemporary kitchen is equipped with every possible appliance, and the modern upstairs shower room is fully tiled. The clever design of the villa ensures that your living area extends to the outdoors with wide doors and windows opening out onto a number of balconies and terraces, with a choice of sun or shade, and magnificent views. The front top floor, sea facing, pergola covered balcony is fully furnished with a wooden lounge set, and a dining table and chairs for al-fresco dining. Convenient and easy access from the top floor of the villa to the pool terrace, adjacent barbeque area, and pretty garden is provided by an external staircase.

Villa Margarets three bedrooms are located on the ground floor which helps to keep them cooler during the long, hot summer season. The 2 double bedrooms both have wide sliding doors which open out onto a shared covered terrace that overlooks the pool and garden. Every modern comfort has been provided at the villa including free WIFI internet access, independent air conditioning throughout (in addition to the ceiling fans in the bedrooms), insect screens, aluminium doors, windows and shutters, water heated by solar panel and immersion heater, a wood burning stove, central heating, a Plasma TV, a DVD player, a CD player, a satellite TV box, an I-pod/I-phone docking station, and a selection of family board games.

Vying for attention with the comfortable villa are the extensive, fenced and gated grounds which include a vibrant garden, an orchard, a barbeque area, and a larger than average private pool that has a Roman end with steps that make it easy to get in and out of. Whether you wish to swim, barbeque, potter around the 4000m2 plot, or simply relax with a good book and a cool drink under the shade of a tree, the attractive garden provides the perfect setting in which to do so.

The pool terrace and the area immediately surrounding the villa has been paved with terracotta tiles and then surrounded with low hedges, natural stone walls, and flowerbeds with colourful and aromatic flowers and shrubs including hibiscus, gaura, roses, bottle brush, pampas grass, palms, geraniums, wisteria and jasmine. The orchard has been planted with a wonderful selection of apple, orange, pear, lemon, tangerine, pomegranate fig, as well as a lone walnut tree. Oleanders line the outer edges of the plot and the remainder of the large garden has been left in its natural state with rocky outcrops interspersed with wild almond trees and an infusion of glorious wild flowers in the Spring time that includes lupins and poppies. The front driveway is gravelled and leads to private parking area that is partially shaded by some of the villa's 14 olive trees. Because the majority of the grounds cannot be overlooked, couples or families searching for a private, comfortable retreat, with views and easy access to local amenities, will find Villa Margaret to be the answer to their prayers.

For larger parties who like to holiday together but still have some privacy, the almost identical villa on the next door plot, Villa Pegasus, can also be booked together with Villa Margaret.

About Villas Crete Holidays

Villa Margaret is exclusively booked by Villas Crete Holidays which is a registered Tourist Office, based in Hampshire, England, and with a resort representative and administrator in Almyrida, Crete. Whilst most travel companies cover many different countries and/or areas of Greece and Crete, we at Villas Crete Holidays only work in the North West of Crete and we specialise in the Apokoranas region, just east of the historic Venetian town of Chania. The Apokoronas (including the villages of Almyrida, Kalives, Kokkino Horio, Plaka and Gavalohori) has long been a popular destination for holiday makers seeking a typically Greek seaside resort area that has many amenities, but is far removed from brash tourism. The area is renowned for its sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise water, stunning views of Souda Bay and The White Mountains, excellent tavernas, and archaeological sites.

The director of Villas Crete Holidays is Frankie Miles. She has worked with rental villas on Crete for more than 20 years and has written the best selling guide book "Crete on the Road". The book includes detailed directions and information to all the major tourist attractions, as well as many hidden sites. Also in the book is the only existing map of the National Highway showing all of the entrances/exits and distances. Frankie’s unrivalled knowledge, love of the island, and attention to detail is now being fully put to use to guarantee a fantastic holiday for our guests.

Why Villas Crete Holidays chose Apokoronos

Villa Margaret offers excellent privacy and a peaceful escape in the beautiful Cretan countryside whilst only being a few minutes by car to a variety of amenities and activities in the nearby villages, and the sandy beaches in Almyrida.

With every possible modern amenity supplied at the villa (including free WIFI), you may not actually want to leave. The pool is larger than average and has a Roman end with safe steps that gently go down into the water.

What makes this villa unique

Villas Crete Holidays truly are the Apokoronas Specialists as unlike other offices, 3 of the 4 members of our expert team live and work here all year round which enables us to always have completely up-to-date information about the villas, local facilities, and tourist attractions. We can help you with all aspects of your holiday including good value, reliable car hire, airport transfers, local information about shops, beaches, tavernas etc, detailed driving directions or walking directions for many routes. We can also arrange private boat hire, private boat trips, private sight-seeing flights, horse riding, water-skiing, big game fishing, guided walking, and guided coach excursions. Our office staff speak English, Greek, and a little French, and have a vast list of local contacts, and our representative in resort also speaks some Italian.

Villas Crete Holidays and Frankie's book have been featured and recommended in articles in major British newspapers including the Sunday Mail and the Sunday Telegraph, as well as smaller publications such as Greece Magazine.

Most importantly, because we handle many villas, in the unlikely event that there is an unforeseen problem at your villa, we can usually offer you an alternative villa (although this cannot be guaranteed in high season).

We have many years experience working in tourism on Crete, and most importantly this experience is specifically related to villa rentals, which needs a very different area of expertise to other types of tourism such as walking holidays, or package holidays for the masses. We use all of our knowledge and local contacts to ensure that your holiday goes off smoothly from start to finish, from first booking the villa that is most suitable for you, to your arrival back home. When you are in resort, we are available during office hours for information, and 24 hours a day should you need medical assistance, yet we remain unobtrusive.

Simple tranquility

  • 5 of 5

Villa Margaret offers you simple tranquility on the beautifully unspoilt Apokoronos district peninsula near Vamos. We took our three teenage daughters for two glorious weeks in August and could not have asked for a more relaxing or reinvigorating holiday.

The website photos are very true to life; the pool area is open and clean with plenty of loungers (for sunning) and umbrellas (for shading), the bedrooms are comfortable and cool, the kitchen is fully equipped and there are plenty of well-appointed eating areas to take advantage of the stunning views and the sunshine! Everything is kept fresh and clean (thank you Fiona and team) but unobtrusively so.

It may not be as ‘swanky’ as come of the more contemporary-designed villas but that is to its benefit; you didn’t feel you had to “stand on ceremony” - you instantly felt relaxed and ‘at home’.

Villa Margaret is set in spacious, well-tended grounds (and, if you need it, the rotary line dries your laundry in seconds!!).

We would recommend hiring a car: to get you to and from the airport (the directions we were supplied with were very comprehensive!), to take advantage of seeing the surrounding unspoilt countryside, finding secluded bays, visiting historic Chania, and topping up your food and drink supplies at the nearest Synca!

Xirosterni is a sleepy hamlet with a village centre which comprises a cluster of stone houses, a well-stocked village store, and a kafenion. The village is famous for its lively street festival on August 5th, to which everyone is invited. Just under 3 kilometres away is Vamos, which is a very pretty village and its narrow streets and stone houses make an ideal starting point for hikes to the surrounding hills. To the south-east of the village, in the Karydi area, one can see the monastery of Agios Giorgos. The ruins of the church’s cells and the old oil-press, with its wonderful domes, remain standing to the present day. Vamos has a large number of amenities including a bank, ATM, 2 petrol stations, 3 tavernas, 2 souvlaki shops, a handful of cafes, a bakery, a hairdresser, and a number of gift shops and mini-markets. Xirosterni is also a short 5 minute drive from the traditional village of Gavalohori. Five hundred metres from the village, you can see several renowned Venetian wells built on a landscape of rare beauty. In Gavalohori there are 4 excellent tavernas, a bakery, a well stocked mini market, a lovely folklore museum and a women’s co-operative which has developed the fine art of handicrafts such as knitting, embroidery and lace making. The lovely seaside village of Almyrida is a 10 minute drive away, and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach, with a small fishing harbour at the eastern end. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are 11 tavernas, 6 cafés, 2 bars, 2 bakeries, a jewellery shop, 4 mini-markets, 6 gift shops, a pharmacy, a butcher, 1 ice cream shop,an off-license, a fruit and vegetable shop with a deli counter, a hairdressers, a nail spa, a body and wellness spa, 3 real estate offices, and a kiosk. Also in Almyrida there is Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, private boat hire, boat trips, private sightseeing flights in a light aircraft, horse riding, big game fishing charters, and guided walking tours and coach excursions. Finally there is a scuba diving office, pedalo rentals, a children's games/activity centre with babysitting, a space with pool tables and games machines, and a water sports centre with windsurfers, kayaks, catamarans, and mountain bikes. Because of its central location, Villa Margaret is also only a 15 minute drive from the bustling seaside town of Georgioupolis which, apart from its 9km beach, fresh-water fed bay, and lively fishing port, also boasts night clubs, bars, and many supermarkets, souvenir shops and amenities. A few minutes by car from the villa, there are a huge variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages with wonderful tavernas. There is also an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing in Kokkino Horio, and lace makers in Gavalohori. For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic Venetian town of Chania is only 50 minutes away by car.

Cooking classes and wine tasting set at a local wineries can be taken by those of you who are interested. Guided walks led by experts in mountaineering and/or flora and fauna can also be arranged. For those of you who prefer to venture out on your own, a copy of the guide book 'Crete on the Road' by Frankie Miles comes with every villa. The book contains detailed directions to many well known and hidden sites, opening times and prices for all attractions, taverna recommendations, and the only existing map of the National Highway showing the exits and entrances.

Crete has everything you that could possibly want from a holiday: soaring mountains that are snow capped from November to June, many great walking trails including Europe's deepest gorge, ancient archaeological sites and Minoan palaces, quaint villages, sparkling clear blue seas with tavernas serving freshly caught fish, golden beaches, glorious wild flowers in the Spring, and a variety of delicious foods which are all made from healthy home grown produce.

As incredible as the island is, it is the Cretan people who will make your holiday truly memorable. Descendants of the Minoan's, one of Europe's earliest civilizations, and shaped by centuries of struggle against oppression, the Cretans are as rugged as the mountains, fiercely independent but passionately friendly.

Villa Margaret is located in the The Apokoronas Region just east of beautiful Chania town. With its stunning Venetian harbour, quayside bars and restaurants, what better place to relax and watch the world go by. In the narrow streets behind the harbour you will find tavernas, bars, the covered market, and many interesting shops.

The climate of Crete is a temperate Mediterranean climate and the weather is characterized by long hot, dry summers and mild winters. The Spring can be warm and sunny during the day but still have cooler evenings and is perfect for walking, bird watching and looking at the wild flowers.
