Riverside Garden & gite of character with balcony over looking river & park wifi

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,506 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Town House + Garden, 3 X 2 Beds (6 Persons) 2 Lounges, 2 Shower/toilet - wifi

A famously fabulous location with lots to do.

The 200 year old gite includes all house linen and towelling, plus high speed internet wifi, a welcome pack - so no extra's from us.

The superb mid views from gite's balcony across to the river and park is wonderful. The main bedroom, kitchen and lounge views are to the Abbey and town.

With two lounges, (ground & second floor) you can enjoy the day and evening as you wish.

The two 1st floor large bedrooms both have twin beds and share a central shower/bidet/toilet.

The ground floor bedroom also has two twin beds and it's own 'shower' en-suite which is also great if you have difficulty getting about.

We've added a couple of child stairs / door gates just in case you need them with the children and we do ask you as responsible parents to supervise them when near stairs, windows, doors and the garden.

We have both on and off road parking for two cars.

Like many places in France the riverside gated small open garden is on the other side of the small road which faces the property. It has a small fairly secluded sun bathing area, large table and 6 chairs (which is where we mainly eat) with some sun loungers. There are some great views into the town, abbey and park. For added security we have added a gate to the steps leading to the river.

The 200 year old property takes the morning rising sun twinkling through the trees in the park opposite and the property backs into the rock. During the summer the sun continues until late afternoon. The house has all modern facilities, very well equipped and is just a few minutes a very short walk flat from the town.

The video is the local mill which is a only approx. 300m away and as you enter the historic town which has flat styled cobbled streets, shops, restaurants, Abbey and centre village which is surrounded by water.

Touring from Brantome is fairly easy and mobile coverage in the main is pretty good (provider dependent of course). We have all the main types of shops and restaurants you would need and two garages. Using Brantome for a hub is also easy to access other great places. Buses run between Angouleme and Perigueux railway stations via Brantome at very cheap prices. From 2018 Brantome has a small river beach, we have communal swimming available at St Martial de Vallete which is an 'all year round pool' with other facilities, plus swimming and pools at other locations. We will supply a list pools on completion of order via our website client access page. We often swim in the river opposite our house.

Brantome is set in the Dordogne, part of French Aquitaine region and a good location to have a fantastic holiday or use as a base. A favourite tourist place there are plenty of seasonal activities for those who require, just relax or tour to view the many historic local areas. Out of season Brantome and the surrounding areas are quieter with fewer places open. Wherever you stay feedback always talks about the ambiance, charm and romance of Brantome and many visitors return because of this very reason. Like everywhere in France, peak seasons can be busy and August is the National holiday month due to long days and weather.

About Brian Wells

Jill & Brian have renovated the house with local artisans over a number of years, the town house has both front and side access. It has been used over this period for Jill to design course material using local subject matter and collect photographic material for her Art School curriculum. Brian spends a lot of time supporting Jill ,and helping charities. Both love the town and surrounding villages and have many local French friends.

Brian Wells purchased this house in 1999

Why Brian Wells chose Brantôme

This property was initially a small end terrace town house with one bedroom built around 1799 -1800, and now provides flexible accommodation. It has been delightfully renovated and developed using modern techniques, including two rooms that are actually under the rock. Typically French exterior and deceptively spacious accommodation provides you with a nice retreat when hot, and a warm retreat in the winter months. We wanted a house which gave us some space and not crowded beds in the bedroom just to get more people in. So we have fair sized bedrooms with a massive master bedroom . The 2nd bedroom is great for light sleepers. For us the location was also close to town but not amongst the hubbub of town life even if along a town access road. We therefore gained the best of all worlds as it has a waterside garden with gated access direct to the river. If using canoes these can be moored safely by the garden or there are two other river public access sets of steps a few metres either side of our garden.

We love sitting in the garden enjoying views across, up and down the river plus of course the relaxing view across the park. The shadows change constantly throughout the day and season and on a quiet day the observant will see the Kingfishers flying past.

The river is well stocked with fish and for those who enjoy fishing and a day , week or longer fishing license is locally available.

For us, French life is about joining in with the local events within the community and we are fortunate to have many good French friends. This house offers an ideal base for visiting local surrounding areas, and we have personally found few other places in France that offer so many beautiful options within easy striking distance. Like most places in France you do need a car but cycling there is fun too.

Brantome sits nicely in the triangle between Limoges, Bergerac and Bordeaux airports, so lots of choice of flying options or if family are joining you.

What makes this house unique

With sheltered warmth in the small private garden, the lower parts of this house offer a welcome change from mid summer heat (which can get very hot), whilst the balcony and floors 1 and 2 give stunning views with double aspect windows to the Abbey, river and parkland.

The mornings and evenings are adorable from either sitting on the balcony or having a meal in the garden as are the morning trips to the bakers for fresh bread and treats! It's funny how we never seem to get home without eating something en route and there's always a volunteer to go to the bakers!

Depending on the size of your party you can eat in the kitchen diner or the ground floor lounge has a lovely oak table and chairs. The table extends as required to a maximum of 10. We tend to eat most of the time in the open garden, to over look the park and river whilst eating.

There are books, games, hi speed Wifi (10Mb) , wifi games, 2 independent TV's, boules and two bicycles for local use to keep you occupied when not touring, using the local amenities or dining out.

The photos show local and surrounding places to visit.

In cooler periods the house has a SMART thermostatic controlled , gas combi boiler central heating system which will automatically commence the thermostatic radiators and all your hot water is on demand.

Location wise you have Limoges, Bergerac, Bordeaux, Brive, Angouleme airports to take your pick from. Two main train line stations at Angouleme and Perigueux provide good access to the network with daily bus routes linking them which route via Brantome.

There is a good road network to allow easy touring.

Our cycles are for local use so to help you enjoy your holiday even more we have partnered with a cycle company who will deliver and collect extra hired cycles to the house, see our own website for more details post reserving this property.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Just a quick thank you for allowing us to stay in your amazing French home in Brantome.

We thoroughly enjoyed our week there even if we had rain a few mornings!  The sun came out every day so we were happy.  What a beautiful town!

Out drive afterwards to Lyon, Dijon and Epernay  was also amazing and went without any hitches!

Will recommend your house to anyone who may be interested in future. Many Thanks Bobette W

Riverside living in idyllic location

  • 5 of 5

The descriptions and photos of this property are very accurate and the owners are very helpful and have provided a wealth of additional information.

Highlights for us were the terrace, balcony and spacious accommodation. The town is just gorgeous and it's lovely to be able to

just saunter in whenever you like.

As has mentioned before, a lot of drivers don't keep to the 20kph speed limit so something to bear in mind. However, most times of the days it's pretty quiet and we enjoyed having plenty of activity to watch from the terrace.

All in all a fabulous stay in a well-loved home.

With children, a visit to Saint Estephe is a must. Beautiful lakeside facilities (plenty of shade plus manmade beach) and all free (even kayak hire!). An easy 30 min drive from the property.

Brilliant location, lovely garden.

  • 4 of 5

The house is on the edge of Brantome with associated parking in the (bat) cave. It stayed cool, even on hot days, which was a blessing. The garden caught the sun and was a very pleasant place to enjoy the glorious weather as well as watching passing canoes.

The master bedroom looks out onto the river but is two twin beds pushed together rather than a double; hence four stars rather than five. Kitchen is well appointed; lots of space, especially for just two of us and fantastic location.

very good

  • 4 of 5

My wife said the towels though clean were a bad colour so she rewashed them to bright white.

I found the fact that both the lav seats would not stay in the upright position sometimes a problem but otherwise we had a great holiday and the proximity to the town is a great bonus.

Can you confirm return of deposit and when it will be credited.

Owner's Response: Hi John, Many thanks for the review we take them all seriously. The linen is washed every week but I guess one two needed that extra session which is unusual. It's a pity you didn't contact us and we could have rectified this for you. Sorry we cannot do anything about French toilets or their ways. Your refund was processed sometime ago, please check with your UK bank, their system can take a while to finally credit to your account. I'll p.m you the details but you should be able to see the credit on your Homeaway portal.

Great location

  • 5 of 5

We arrived for a few days in the Dordogne and Brantome was fabulous.

Although early May we had sunshine but the mornings were still chilly so a

jumper was required. When the sun came out during the day we had

temperatures between 18-24. The house was very clean, spacious and warm.

Very good value for its size and amenities. We visited Perigueux,

Bourdeilles and eat at the Saint Sicaire besides the river which was

reasonably priced. If you book or get there a bit early you can have a table

by the river. Other than that we relaxed in the garden and took some well

earned rest. Recommended and such a great area.

Amazing weather in April, lovely clean and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

When we arrived we were pleasantly happy as the place was had all the modern facilities, immaculate, very well supplied with everything we needed and lovely and warm inside with the central heating during the cool periods of the day and evening. It's so much bigger inside than it looks from the outside. The main bedroom we used was huge. One test we always make is how clean the oven is, it was spotless. Most of the local facilities and shops were opening up for the season. Parking was easy in the large cave which was dry and clean. Restaurant wise we used the Le Bistot Saint Pierre which is at the top of Victor Hugo, the Entrecote was excellent, so tasty other than that we eat in. Exceptional value. Look forward to coming back.

Lovely and comfortable stay in Brantome!

  • 5 of 5

The Maison Brantome provided us with exactly the kind of "real" living in France experience we were looking for. Brian provided the best of support in the way of booking help, what to do suggestions, and other "how to's" that made our experience easy as well as fun. The house is spacious and comfortable and located beautifully to allow for easy walking into the village. Will gladly return!
