About the property

Converted farmhouse just minutes from beach, golf, sailing, fishing or rambling.

La Malvoie is an 18th Century farmhouse situated in the quiet rural hamlet of Les Eaux midway between the town of Talmont-Saint-Hilaire, (2 kms) and Veillon beach (2 kms) with its coveted EU classification of 'Pavillon Bleu D'Europe' for quality and cleanliness. The property also has the advantage of being within a 15 minute drive of the stylish seaside resort town of Les Sables d’Olonne, with its chic shops, Michelin-starred restaurants and night life. This house is detached with its own secluded quarter acre walled garden with superb views of the surrounding fields and protected 'marais'. Constructed in 1728, the house was renovated by a local interior designer and provides all the comforts of modern living in a period property. It is the perfect destination at any time of the year, having a brand new wood burning stove installed this year which makes for cosy evenings by the fire during the cooler months. It is close to a number of excellent golf courses, riding, sailing and surfing facilities. There are tennis courts within a mile of the house and a network of excellent cycling & walking trails

Amenities: Dominated by the ruins of its splendid 12th century castle, Talmont-Saint-Hilaire is an attractive country town with extensive shopping facilities from traditional boulangeries, butchers and fishmongers, to the modern 'Super U' supermarket on the outskirts. It also boasts a lively seasonal Saturday market. La Malvoie is situated in a small hamlet close to Talmont and is well positioned to take advantage of a host of leisure facilities. Within a 2-3 mile radius you will find beautiful beaches, tennis courts, riding schools, golf, mini-golf, bicycle rides, country walks and sailing. There is also a cinema in Talmont open in the summer season. The local sandy beach of Le Veillon is over one and a half kilometres long and has the dual advantage of facing both the Atlantic Ocean and, behind its sand dunes, a protected salt-water inlet ideal for windsurfing and picnics. It has been awarded the coveted European Union classification of “Pavillon Bleu D’Europe”.

Other information: On arrival you will find a 'Welcome' booklet in the house which provides further information on the area and guidance on the way the house works. “Angela Bird’s Vendée” can be bought in the UK or in France or in most online book stores and is highly recommended for some pre-holiday reading.

One point of note is that the Vendée is said to have a 'micro climate' and, as a result, it enjoys sunny days second only to the South of France but with the advantage of not being quite so hot. With its five 18-hole courses the Vendée is, understandably, described as 'très golfique'. A 'Formule Golf” pass gives deals for several courses. The golf clubs usually have good restaurants, open to all – non-members as well as members.Lake and river fishing should yield tench, roach, chub, perch, bream, carp, pike and zander. A 'carte pêche-vacances' (holiday fishing permit) is available for holidaymakers, price around 30 euros (£20) for 15 consecutive days between 1 June and 30 September.

Sightseeing : In addition to the 12th Century castle (with its own night-time 'spectacle' in the summer) and the new Aquarium in Talmont, other local places of interest include the Motor Museum and Zoo in Les Sables and the 'Maison de Clemenceau' in St.Vincent-sur-Jard. Further afield, Mareuil-sur-Lay is a charming town in the middle of the local wine growing district N-W of Luçon, where you can visit the vineyards and taste the wine. Also worth a visit are the Marais Poitevin or Green Venice in Coulon (West of Niort), the port & town of La Rochelle & the port & town of St. Martin on Île de Ré. Another attraction is the Puy du Fou, a spectacular historical theme park, which comes highly recommended as an action packed day out. The evening show is more than any ordinary “son et lumière”. With 2,000 participants and 12,000 spectators it is a unique experience.

About Heidi Todd

Hi - we're called Heidi, Christine and Mark and we're siblings who jointly own La Malvoie.

Heidi Todd purchased this house in 1983

Why Heidi Todd chose Les-Sables-d'Olonne area

This property was passed down to us by our parents. The property has been in the family since 1983 so we have been holidaying here for over 30 years and still love it as much as ever. It is a very special place for us as a family.

What makes this house unique

What makes La Malvoie special is that is set in unspoilt countryside, surrounded by fields and marais and feels 'Far from the Madding Crowd' but is only a 5 minute drive to the beach and local town or a 15 minute drive to the upscale resort town of Les Sables d'Olonne. Truly the best of both worlds. We love the fact that it was built in 1728 and that it retains so many of its original features while having been sympathetically renovated and updated.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for a wonderful week in La Malvoie. We were fortunate with the great weather and enjoyed the local walks, sunflower fields and the beautiful Veillon beach was the firm favourite with our two girls (aged 9 and 7). Advice on local interests has been useful and we enjoyed the food market at Les Sables d’Olonne. We also enjoyed the Mareuil sur Lay “Route du Vin” and purchased much more wine than anticipated. Overall a very comfortable and well equipped house with so much character and history. Many thanks again and we hope to return.

  • 5 of 5

Hier komen wij graag vaker terug!

Bedankt Eddy en Anne-Marie

Très belle maison, excellentes vacances

  • 5 of 5

Globalement, on a passé 15 jours super.

THE VENDEE is located on the French Atlantic coast, just south of Brittany and Nantes, and north of La Rochelle. Its position, within 3 to 5 hours of the various western ferry ports, makes the area an easy day's journey from Britain and Ireland. With more than 100 miles of sandy beaches edged with dunes and pine woods, and a very mild micro-climate, the Vendée is today a popular tourist destination. It boasts many churches, abbeys and museums. Talmont St Hilaire and its surrounding area has an unspoiled and very diverse natural environment with the coastal mudflats and marshes attracting many unusual birds. The local beach of Le Veillon is over one and a half kilometres long and boasts excellent surfing opportunities as well as a sheltered 'back' beach ideal for families with young children. There is also a beach side restaurant and other cafes. The leisure port of Bourgenay is close by with its cafes, bars, pools, playgrounds, children's farm, golf course and other amenities.

Other Activities: bird watching

Golf: There is an 18 hole par 72 (6392 yd) and a 18 hole pitch & putt par 54 golf course nearby in the Port Bourgenay leisure complex. There are also another four 18 hole golf courses within easy reach. These are at: L'Aiguillon-sur-Vie (near Coex/Challans), Nesmy (near La Roche-sur-Yon), Olonne-sur-Mer (near Les Sables-d'Olonne) and St Jean de Monts.
