Exactly what we wanted

  • 5 of 5

The cabin, is the last cabin along the tiny track meaning it has no cars or people walking past. Inside the cabin there are two bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other 3 cleverly stacked single beds! The kitchen is tiny but has a regular sized cooker, fridge (no freezer section), microwave oven, toaster, kettle and sink. There is a really good selection of pans and other kitchen utensils. There is no freezer so don’t take anything frozen or anything you might want to freeze.

The lounge is a good size for a small cabin and has a fold down table with 4 chairs. There is a file explaining how to operate all the appliances and things such as as the water heater. There is also a file full of leaflets of attractions in the area (mostly within an hours drive), maps and suggested walks.

In the village of Dalavich there is a small cafe/shop/post office, the food here is excellent and reasonably priced. They sell home baked cakes and biscuits that are delicious and fresh. They also sell amazing ice cream. There is also a community centre that houses a restaurant, bar, and randomly has a launderette!

The local boat hire rents rowing boats or motor boats either by the hour or by the day. They also rent bicycles.

The nearest pub/restaurant outside Dalavich is in the next village going north along the track (approx 8 miles) it is called the Kilcrenan Inn. They restaurant serves lunches and then closes until 6pm when it reopens for dinner. The menu is changed daily depending upon what has been bought that day. The food is excellent and reasonably priced (£20 pp for starter and main on our visit).

The cabin attracts many birds, and there are bird feeders that you can fill with fatballs and bird seed (both can be purchased from the village shop). There are also red squirrels, pinemartin and bats!

We stayed 6 nights at the cabin and left feeling refreshed and grateful that the cabin and site were exactly what we had anticipated.

The only downside were the midgies which were persistent little devils and were in abundance everywhere and seemingly immune to all repellents. However this is the western highlands and that is the home turf of midgies.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay. For future reference Skin so Soft (Avon) and Smidget do help to keep the midges away.

Beautiful, peaceful hideaway.

We have just returned from a break in Strae Cabin.

To be honest, this cabin wasn't my choice, it was one of the few my partner liked.

I wanted something a bit more luxurious, bigger & one that didn't allow dogs, but we went with this Strae.

Communication with the owner is excellent, he answers any emails very quickly.

Although there are other cabins around, Strae is quite secluded which is exactly what we wanted.

I was really worried that I'd walk in and find traces of dogs, like smell and hair. This was a big concern to me and I just wouldn't have been able to stay.

There was absolutely nothing to worry about, no dog smell at all!

The cabin is small but we knew that, for 2 people though, it just fine. It has everything you could possibly need plus lots more. There are books & dvds. We made use of the dominoes. There is also a basket in the bedroom with games and stuff. The kitchen has all the utensils you need and the were even tea bags & sugar & a few other bits.

There's a guest book which is interesting to read & see what other people have said. There's also a folder full of lots of things to do & local information.

We had no phone signal & no wifi and although I missed it, it was lovely knowing that no one was going to disturb you.

Whenever I'm away, the bed and the shower are the most important things to me & both were fine. The bed was comfortable & the shower was good. The bathroom is a little narrow but again, not a problem.

Outside the cabin there is a fire pit, we made dinner down here one night.

I am not a nature person or an outdoors person, so apart from a couple of little walks, I stayed in the cabin while my partner went on walks. I had loaded my Ipad with books & puzzles & was happy just listening to music & watching the birds on the veranda, this was great & amusing to watch, even for a non nature person like myself. We never saw the pine marten but sandwiches we put out, did disappear by morning.

If I had one negative about it, it's the step up to the cabin, it's a little high. There is however a handle to pull yourself up or you can step up at the other end of it and walk along.

So, for me, who wasn't at all sure about this place, I absolutely loved it & didn't want to leave. We even considered asking if it was available for another couple of nights.

We will definitely return

Great cosy little property ideal for a relaxing break.

  • 5 of 5

The stay was ideal for a short, restful break away. The cabin had everything needed, and was cosy and warm. The little cafe nearby is highly recommended for its bacon sandwiches and cake! Lovely walk up through the woods as well. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Cosy cabin for our September retreat

  • 5 of 5

My partner, our two dogs and I throughly enjoyed our stay at Strae, in the lovely Loch Aweside Park.

Strae was a perfect base for trips to Oban, hiking and short ambles down to the lochside.

It is small inside and was perfect for two adults. The decor was cosy and homely and the cabin was clean.

I would definitely stay again.
