FRIDAY CHANGEOVER ... TOTALLY REFURBISHED 2016 ...

One of the most spectacular locations on the south coast, Midships in Old Colonial House, built in the 1920’s but totally refurbished and remodelled in 2016, is set just above the South West Coast Path overlooking the jewel of Hope Cove bay and harbour.

With uninterrupted 180° views from all the principal rooms and the private 40 foot terrace, Midships enjoys one of the best views of any holiday cottage. Facing west, the sunsets dipping over the far horizon can be stunning.

Midships has just undergone a total refurbishment. The entire cottage has been gutted, remodelled, rewired and re-plumbed but has maintained the cosy, cottagey atmosphere. Walls have come down on the ground floor to create a large open-plan living/dining/kitchen area with spectacular views and French window access to the private 40 foot terrace. The new Shaker-style kitchen boasts an Aga and granite work surfaces and the living area has a wood burning stove (firewood is provided at no extra cost).

Both bedrooms on the ground floor have their own en-suite bathroom and loo. We have also built a new suite of rooms, the Bridge, on the first floor with a double bedroom, shower and loo and a large living room with a vast 13 foot eyebrow dormer with stunning views over the harbour across Bigbury Bay and out to sea. The Bridge will be available for larger parties booking Midships, for a supplementary cost of 50% of the price of the Midships booking. Underfloor heating has been installed throughout for super-cosy warmth when it's needed.

A couple of minutes traffic-free walk from the village pub, restaurants, shops and beaches of Hope Cove, our two/three bedroomed cottage, sleeping 4 – 6 (or 8 if you are also taking the Bridge first floor suite), not only has the Aga and wood burning stove in the large open-plan living/kitchen/dining room but also a Smart TV, WiFi, music streaming from your MP3 player or smart phone via Bluetooth, and a Weber barbecue to name just a few of the facilities.

Midships is a comfortable, cosy cottage, well-equipped for the perfect family holiday whether you are into bucket-and-spade beaches, boating, surfing or walking. For your total comfort outside the summer months, underfloor heating has been installed throughout.

Hope Cove, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a delightfully laid back, very picturesque fishing village boasting the Hope & Anchor Pub (which is open all year round), several other restaurants and tea rooms, the village shop and Post Office and an art gallery - and not one, but two safe, clean beaches of different character. Should you need any more excitement than that, Hope Cove is conveniently located just 10 minutes’ drive from the glitz and glamour of Salcombe, and a convenient 15 minutes’ drive from the supermarkets and facilities of the market town of Kingsbridge.

Midships is the ideal location for a family seaside holiday but, for the more active, apart from the world-class coastal walks on your doorstep (the famous Southwest Coastal Path is literally at the front gate), there is surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding just along the coast at Bigbury and Bantham, together with the famous links golf course at Thurlestone.

Midships is THE most perfect holiday home.

2-bedrooms, both en-suite, sleeping 4 - 6 (1 double in one room, 2-4 singles in the other) downstairs in Midships. A further double bedroom, large additional living room and shower/WC upstairs in the Bridge for supplementary cost.

About Tim & Maria Barker

We, the Barker's, are a family of sailor adventurers who can't stand the idea of not being able to see the sea, hence our delight in buying Midships which we hope to keep in the family for generations. After many years of family holiday sailing along the coast of the West Country, our recent sailing has taken us from Arctic Norway to Antarctica and many hotter places in between on our beloved Mina2 (check out mina2.com). When we're not sailing we love being at Midships but, when we're unable to be there, we love sharing it with our guests.

Tim & Maria Barker purchased this cottage in 2014

Why Tim & Maria Barker chose South Hams

Having sailed down this coast for so many years, we always had a dream of owning a coastal property in Devon, but our tick-list was so demanding we doubted if we would ever find something. Then, after several years searching, we found Midships.

What makes this cottage unique

Midships is THE perfect holiday home where we can watch the children safely playing on the protected beach from our own living room and bedroom; that had a large private terrace (in the case of Midships 40 feet long!) on which we could enjoy a spectacular unobstructed view over a harbour and out to sea, and that faced West (almost unheard of on the south coast of England) such that, with drink in hand, we could watch the sun dipping down over the horizon in the evening. To have world-class walking along arguably the most beautiful stretch of the South West Coast Path literally on our doorstep was a thrilling bonus as was the two minute traffic-free walk into the village with its pub (open all year), restaurants, tearooms, and village shop and Post Office. If we or the kids wanted a bit more excitement of an evening, the glitz and glamour of Salcombe is just 10 minutes away by car or taxi.We found perfection.

Stunning Midships in glorious Hope Cove

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed in Hope Cove before however this time we felt so much more part of the surroundings. This is due to the wonderful position of Midships.

Usually we read lots of books, but not this time, we just kept looking at the view, watching out for the seal, gazing at the sunsets. Relaxing!

We are so pleased to have found Midships the best place we have stayed in (and we've stayed in alot!). We are looking forwards to our return already.

Midships lives up to its description

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a week staying in Midships. It is everything the description claims it to be...and more. The location is perfect - beautiful cove but not isolated with a useful little shop and a great pub - but beware the Rattler cider. It is lethal but lovely!

Midships itself is clean, warm, tastefully decorated and very comfortable with all of the amenities that you could possibly need. Tim and Maria have a refreshingly relaxed approach to letting. They do NOT provide endless sheets of rules backed up by notices outlining the do'd and don't. Rather, they trust that guests will treat their house with the care and respect that they have invested in Midships. Nothing is too much trouble.

Ultimately, the best recommendation has to be that we have already booked our stay at Midships for next year. What more can I say?

Thank you Tim and Maria.

This was the first time ever we had been away at Christmas with grandparents and three teenagers and we were absolutely spoilt with the interior of midships and its location . Added to this we had amazing blue skies and were able to swim and surf daily with grandparents looking on. The various beaches on the doorstep as well as bantham and bigbury are great for walks and watersports . We could not have asked for more ...

Fab location, fab house. Could not do better

  • 5 of 5

we walked and we walked with my sons and puppy. Great friendly local pub, gave me a cake with candle for birthday - what more do you want. Warm, out of the world views, beautiful warn days and spectacular windy wet nights - I just love this. All cosy inside. You can not do better.

Perfection

  • 5 of 5

I am loath to write this as we would rather it stayed a perfect little secret accessible only to those in the know. However, midships is the kind of place you pinch yourself about. Located on the cliff above a string of beaches, 5 minutes to the shop and pub, 5 light years away from the pressures of life, this cottage is perfect. It's immaculately set up - the owners clearly see it as their home and not just a let. We have spent a blissful week and have booked next year already. You know when you find a place that you know will become your holiday haven for years to come? This is it. It was our first summer holiday with our baby daughter and the most special of times. Expensive, yes, but worth every penny. All I'd say is bring black out blinds if you have little ones, and make sure you go to the pub on a Wednesday night in full summer. But don't book it in fact. Only we can go there....

Owner's Response: Really pleased to welcome you as serial guests at Midships in the future ... and your parents who stayed with you for a few days and have themselves booked another week in November! We look forward to your future visits.

Midships overlooks the bay and beach of Hope Cove, ideal for family seaside holidays whether it be crabbing from the harbour wall, shrimping with a net in the rock pools, swimming in the sheltered bay, surfing, windsurfing, dinghy sailing, kayaking. Or try kitesurfing in nearby Thurlestone or Bantham. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Midships has the South West Coast Path literally on its doorstep with world class walking and hiking along the dramatic and beautiful cliffs and sea shores of Devon. For golfers there are two 18-hole golf courses nearby at Thurlestone and Bigbury, with horse-riding available from a number of stables, including pony-trekking on the moorlands of Dartmoor National Park. For the evenings there is the Hope and Anchor pub, and The Cove bar and restaurant within a couple of minutes traffic-free walk serving excellent food, and other great restaurants are within a short drive.
