Photos and Description of this 4 bedroom holiday chalet in Chandolin - Chalet Patmarso

7 Bed, 2 Bathroom Terraced Chalet With Unparalleled Mountain Views

The chalet has 4 bedrooms, one ensuite with a double bed, 1 single, 2 with 2 beds. There is a well equipped kitchen with a bar that leads through into the dining and living rooms which are open plan. There is a long wooden dining room table with two benches either side, which makes for great convivial eating. Or you can choose to eat at the bar on high barstools, either in the kitchen, looking out to the dining area, or, on the other side, in the dining area, looking into the kitchen. The fact that it is open plan, but spacious, makes it very easy and comfortable to be there as a family, or a group of friends, without feeling on top of each other. There is a washing machine and tumble dryer. There are cupboards in every room, there is a stereo and a projector and screen to watch movies in the living room. There is also wi-fi. The terrace is big and wide and can easily be sunbathed on or accommodate people having meals. There is a garden outside the kitchen door and land all around the house for adults to enjoy and children to play in. The chalet is mainly on two levels, with a basement, too, mainly used for entering the chalet and for the washing machine. There is a games room with a ping-pong table in the basement as well. If coming by car it is possible to drive right up to just below the chalet - then there are a few steps, a short path and a few more steps (2 minutes) and you are at the front door.

About Sophie Verhagen

I live in London but go to Chandolin with my family a few times a year. Growing up in Brussels, the mountains of the Val d'Anniviers were a perfect antidote to the flat landscape of my hometown, and I enjoyed the mountains more and more ever since.

Sophie Verhagen purchased this chalet in 1962

Why Sophie Verhagen chose Sierre - Anniviers

The chalet was built by my parents and passed on to me and my brothers. Our father and grandfather were passionate mountain climbers and both loved coming to spend time in the mountains. Now it is the turn of our children to enjoy coming to this magical place, too. There is a peacefulness and beauty about the chalet and the village which stays with you a long time after you have left - a whole day can just be spent on the terrace, looking out at the view and watching the colours changing in the sky and on the mountains.

What makes this chalet unique

The feeling of space when you arrive at the chalet is breath-taking. You really do feel on top of the world, and at 2,000 metres you almost are! Whether you are inside or outside the chalet the feeling of spaciousness is there and helps to add to the restful atmosphere. When you sit on the terrace you have the most amazing panorama before you, including the Zinalrothorn, the Matterhorn, the Pointe de Zinal, Obergabelhorn, the Dent Blanche and Besso, not to mention the smaller range that borders the other side of the Val d'Anniviers. It takes you away from all mundane concerns and gives you perspective on your life as well as providing you with a well-earned break.

We spent one week in Sophie’s family chalet. From the living room you have an impressive view over the Val d’Anniviers and we spent a lot of time on the balcony just enjoying the sun and the view. In the evening we put on a fire which made the chalet an even cosier place. The other rooms are also nicely decorated and clean. Sophie was very forthcoming and flexible.

Idyllic Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

The chalet is an amazing place to have a holiday. It's the perfect venue for a large family. The living quarters were spotlessly clean and had all the required facilities: great kitchen with lots of crockery and cutlery, a dishwasher, bread slicer, coffee machine etc. There is a large dining table which seats 10 comfortably. There is a big screen and projector so you can watch films in the evening. The views from the sunny balcony are amazing. The bed linen was spotless and washing machine and drier were really useful.

It is easy to walk to the local village where there is a supermarket. A larger supermarket is in a village a short drive away. The ski slopes can be reached by a complimentary bus service, if you have a car, parking is available at the bottom of the slopes.

The skiing is wonderful and the views incredible. I thoroughly recommend this as an ideal family holiday.

Chandolin telesiege
Car: recommended

Chandolin is a small, south-facing village situated at almost 2,000 metres with stunning views over such mountains as the Matterhorn, Zinalrothorn, Besso, Dent Blanche. The chalet is perfectly situated for walking in and around Chandolin. You can walk straight out of the front door up into the mountains, walk down to St Luc along a beautiful forest trail, or up to the Lac Noir to take a cold dip or go fishing. As it is a very quiet and undisturbed are, you are likely to see a range of flora and fauna, including marmots, mountain hares, roe deer, and chamois, as well as blueberries and wild strawberries and raspberries. An hour's drive away are several thermal baths, either in the direction of Brig or towards Geneva, which are open air and make a great day out for adults and children. The ski-lifts are at the entrance of the village and can be either accessed by car or there is a free minibus service through the village in the winter which will take you to them. One chairlift takes you to the top of the Chandolin resort, the other accesses the St Luc resort. You can take lifts up to 3,000 metres, there is much off-piste skiing, as well as well-maintained piste skiing. As a small resort, which nevertheless has many runs, it benefits from few crowds, so no long queues for lifts! There is a museum in the village, well worth visiting, which documents the life of the intrepid Swiss explorer, Ella Maillart, who made the village her home during the second half of her life. You can also hike up to mountain refuges from Zinal and from there do mountaineering, or take the funiculaire in St Luc to visit the observatory above St Luc or follow the great 'Chemin des Planetes' to, and beyond the Hotel Weisshorn which sits impressively high above St Luc. Congratulate yourself when you reach the Hotel Weisshorn with a slice of tarte aux myrtilles - you won't be disappointed!
