Ladysmith House is found in the old fishing village of Scalloway, Shetland. This quaint recently refurbished cottage has retained it's old-world charm but with a modern twist.
The cottage overlooks the picturesque harbour and 17th century castle. Pine trees shelter the cottage and make it and ideal spot for bird- watching, whilst at the back of the property you can make friends with Shetland ponies which freely roam the hill behind the dyke. The seabirds and seals, like those shown in my photographs below are only a short drive away and can be seen and photographed quite easily. The seals can be visited on the rocks all year round and the puffins from April through to August along with many other seabird colonies, some seasonal, some not.
Beautiful white sandy beaches are just a short drive away and the cottage is perfectly situated for lovely walks. A short stroll takes you down to the harbour where there is plenty of boating activity and local amenties including well-stocked shops, museum, post office, swimming pool, restaurants and chinese takeaway.
Scalloway is famous for it's wartime connections with Norway and played a major part in the 'Shetland Bus' operations which did so much for the resistance movement and smuggled many to freedom from the Nazis, but with a high cost of young Norwegian lives. A beautiful memorial to their honour proudly stands in the middle of the village. Norway House where these brave young men stayed between operations is a lovely Nordic-painted building situated at the bottom of Ladysmith Road. Scalloway museum tells the story of this epic time of adventure in great detail and is open to the public each day only closing in the winter.
