About Louise Baker

Woodpecker Barn is part of a complex of nine converted cottages that were built on a working farm in 2004. The current owners are siblings Louise Baker and James Mathews, who purchased Woodpecker Barn in October 2014, made aware of it's availability from a family friend.

Louise was sports mad as a child and has carried that through her adult years, albeit conceding that motherhood is twice as challenging as any netball or athletics competition. A keen angler, James would spend everyday by the waters edge if circumstances would allow and does so even when they don't.

Louise Baker purchased this barn in 2014

Why Louise Baker chose Teignbridge

Lovers of the outdoor life and restricted by the ever increasing concrete jungle that is the South East of England, they were looking for the perfect country getaway for their family and friends. No doubt you will enjoy your own 'Escape to the Country' as much as they do.

What makes this barn unique

This property is on a complex which provides an indoor swimming pool, games room (pool table, table tennis, table football and other toys) and external children's play area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Stayed here with my husband, 21month old daughter and both sets of our parents and we were extremely satisfied with everything woodpecker barn had to offer. The kitchen is huge and the living room is cosy. The wood burner was great as it was quite cold. Facilities were outstanding and the added extras were much appreciated from kids toys, DVDs, games, travel cot, stair gates. Owners were very quick to respond and friendly. Would absolutely stay again!

If you want peace and quiet, we would recommend this location.

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Woodpecker Barn, it was perfect for both parents and the children of 5 and 2 years old. The location is suitable for days out, as well as staying on the former farm, with full use of the playground, swimming pool and games room to keep everyone occupied.

The barn itself is very spacious and clean and equipped with everything you would ever need including all the safety equipment for babies and toddlers if required.

If you want a relaxing break with the family, this is the place to go, boil the kettle and enjoy a nice cuppa in the garden whilst listening to the sheep chewing the grass!! Bliss.

Superb barn, amazing setting and an oasis of tranquility!

  • 5 of 5

The property was exactly as the pictures portrayed, excellently presented, clean and set within beautiful countryside. This was by far the best equipped accommodation we have ever stayed in - the owners had thought of everything! (slow cooker/sandwich maker/extensive DVD collection and excellent Wi-Fi to name but a few). The welcome bottle of wine and goodies were very well received! We used all the facilities and especially loved the warm swimming pool and enjoyed games of pool and table tennis in the games room.

The setting is very tranquil, though be prepared for a very narrow lane leading up to the property and note that there is a railway line nearby - although you can hear it, it is not intrusive by any means.

The location of the property is very central to a variety of nearby attractions and we especially enjoyed boulder climbing at Becky Falls and Dartmoor Adventure Park, with its high ropes, kayaking and beautiful scenery.

The layout of the property was excellent as it allowed the children to have 'their' space in their bedroom, complete with television and DVD player, and the lounge and kitchen are separated by the entrance hall, with the children's bedroom above the kitchen.

We will definitely be considering returning next year, as the barn was perfect for us!

Thank you Linda and James

A beautifully presented barn in idyllic countryside

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Woodpecker Barn during a beautiful sunny week in May on a family holiday. We can't fault it at all - clean and tidy on arrival and incredibly well kitted out it felt like a home away from home! The kids loved the indoor pool and games room which were both well maintained. Excellent customer service from the owners throughout - would definitely return!

Well equipped and spacious barn, great stay despite cleaners oversight

  • 4 of 5

We stayed for a long weekend at the beginning of April.

To get the major negative point out of the way first, when we arrived the property hadn't been cleaned, so no linen, towels etc. No logs for the wood burner so we had to buy some for the first evening, This was obviously down to a lack of communication somewhere down the line, but did take the initial gloss off the stay and having a 6 month old baby meant we were slightly uneasy as to where we could put her. Also having a 5 year old who wasn't able to go to bed before the new linen, towels etc had arrived, and we'd made the beds ourselves! The owners were very apologetic though and were constantly in touch to keep us informed with the progress of tracking down their cleaner, who did turn up the following day and did a very thorough job in tidying up. And the owners also refunded us a discount.

The Barn itself is finished to a very high standard and really well equipped with TV's in all bedrooms plus kitchen and Sitting Room. The bedrooms are also a good size and the "family" bedroom had more than enough room for 2 adults and 2 children including a cot. The property is a little off the beaten track, but as we were after a more remote country experience, we can have no complaints and the view from the master bedroom is superb. It would have been nice to have a double oven as cooking a roast for 7 in a single oven is a bit of a mission, but in general terms there is everything you could possibly need, plus a dishwasher as well. We did find that we were continually turning the boiler on as there was a regular lack of hot water, but I think if we had been staying longer would have looked into the timing a bit more

A real bonus was the pool, and as the weather over the weekend wasn't too good, gave us something to fill the time, plus there is also a games room with Table Tennis, Pool, and other activities provided.so plenty to do. The Barn is also very well equipped with a huge DVD collection, and there is a good range of choices to suit all tastes and ages

We would definitely consider returning as this was the best accommodation we have stayed in for some time, despite the initial disappointment of the lack of the cleanliness. The owners have clearly gone to great lengths to create a really lovely and well equipped holiday venue,
