El Cañuelo is an ideal base for day trips to the beautiful cities of Ronda, with its famous gorge and also has the oldest Bullring in Spain. There are several bodega tours in the Serranía de Ronda, the closest being just outside Gaucin.
Gaucin is a spectacular, unspoilt white village with many food shops, a chemist, bank, bars, four restaurants and a public tennis court. There is a lively art scene with the annual ‘Open Studios’ proving to be very popular with a wide audience http://www.artgaucin.com . Throughout the year Gaucin has many fascinating fiestas, traditional Saint days and the ‘Semana-Santa’, their holy week, processions. In August Gaucin celebrates its ‘Feria’ with a fairground, dancing, a flamenco festival and their very own bull-fights.
Overlooking the village are the ruins of a Moorish castle, which has incomparable views over to the Mediterranean Coast, North Africa and Gibraltar. This area is a paradise for walking, exploring, horse-riding and bird watching.
The Mediterranean beaches are about a thirty minute drive away, while the Atlantic coast, with its fine white sand and famous wind surfing is only one and a half hours drive away.
The Atlantic beaches, about one and half hours drive.
Ronda is about a 45mins driving the most scenic route.
Activities available locally are walking, trekking, tennis and riding. Painting classes, yoga, Thai Chi are also all available. Sports activities for children, such as tennis lessons, specific walks, football and riding can be arranged. Directions There are many direct flights to Malaga from the UK. It is about a hour and thirty minutes drive to El Cañuelo. The nearest airport is Gibraltar, about 45 mins drive away. Clients are given directions, as well as a contact phone number. Car hire is essential, we can suggest good companies to book with.
El Cañuelo is an ideal for a base or a hideaway, some visitors never leave the place, where others go on multiple day-trips and love coming back here to relax and recuperate.
This property is perfect in any way possible. We were in awe when we first walked into the house. The views are insane, the gardens beautiful, the house is huge and beautifully decorated. And then the little pool house and the pool.. that alone is worth staying there!
And the area is perfect. Walking distance to pretty Gaucin, and easy daytrips to Rhonda or the beaches.
Nick is an amazing host, he was so helpful and great.
We loved it and will definitely come back!
Stunning location, amenities and genuinely a home away from home. We all wanted to chill out and relax. That is what El Canuelo is all about! Seamless comfort, stunning location, and quiet enjoyment. The village is close enough to walk to, but far enough away not to impinge on quiet relaxation.
We had a fabulous stay at El Canuelo in August. The house is beautiful, comfortable and very well-equipped. The views from the house/pool are absolutely stunning (we could see Gibraltar) and the pool area/casita are perfect. Our 2 sons (ages 3 and 5) lived in the pool and we were all incredibly relaxed. We would recommend the house highly. Nick was very responsive to all questions and provided a wealth of valuable information about the house and surrounding area. We will definitely be back!!
This stunniing country estate is just below the hilltop village of Gaucin.
Historic town dating back to the Roman times and beyond. Visit the oldest bullring in Spain and the “New Bridge” over the famous “Tajo” (gorge).
The many WHITE VILLAGES nearby.
An extraordinary mixture of the exotic and spectacular with the commonplace. Worth making the trip to the top.
GAUCIN The castle is has the most fantastic setting. open during shopping hours, closed from 1.3-4.30aprox. (times may vary according to season and weather) The church is worth a visit and the Hermita on the way up to the castle where the village’s patron saint is kept. There are of course many stunning churches in Ronda.
Cuevas de la Pileta are a must for anyone remotely interested in pre historic cave painting. Discovered at the turn of the century they are privately owned and quiet unexploited. (no coloured lights and music). Do take a jumper in summer, it can feel very cool inside. You’ll come face to face with 20000 year old paintings in the light of your own gas lamp. Be particularly warned about being broken into the car.
Many of the old frontier villages have their own castles. Gaucin dates back to Roman times although most of what you see is Moorish. It is named after Guzman el Bueno who died in battle in 1309. It is well worth a visit and the views are extraordinary.
MUSEUMS one unique one is the museum of bullfighting at the bullring in Ronda. There is a beautiful little mill museum in the tiny village of Benalauria . This gem is run by a local co operative. They also serve meals. A nice day trip with a lunch.
TENNIS/PUBLIC SWIMMING POOLS
The tennis court is opposite the petrol station, down a double flight of steps. It is open to all, on a “first come first served basis”. Swimming pools: the Gaucin swimming pool opens during the Spanish summer holidays, which are from the end of June until the first week of September.
There are a number of swimming pool in the nearby villages all of which can be visited. Very popular with the Spanish youth.
Puerto de la Duquesa: beach is on the western side of the port, reachable through the port. There is a lovely bay, also ideal for little kids, with a beach bar, where you find grilled fish and all the other delicious foods. Deckchairs and umbrellas can be rented.
Estepona beach: is gentle and well maintained. Best to park in the underground carpark all along the seafront.
Estepona harbour: There is a small bay on the western side of Estepona harbour, very nice and relaxing as it is sheltered. To find it go to the harbour, turn right straight away and go to the very end (direction west) through the car-park which is unpaved and further still until you see it. You can drive right to the end where you’ll find a couple of nice beach bar/s restaurants.
Laguna Beach: exit 157 on the coast road, then to San Pedro (Malaga A7), past Kempinski Hotel, take the next exit, you'll see the thatched roofs at the beach, about 40mins from Canuelo.
Puerto Banus: exit 174 on the coast road, about 15km beyond Laguna Beach, about 50mins from Canuelo.
San Diego Beach: to Manilva, right on the coast road, right at the P&V sign, just after the 'VET' sign, about 35mins from Canuelo.
