A True Tuscany Experience!

  • 5 of 5

Wow this Villa was amazing! It was like transporting in time but with all the modern conveniences. Kitchen and bathrooms were upgraded and home was very clean. Great for our family of 8 plus my niece and baby. Everyone had their own room with bathroom. The view is what we came for after seeing the photos when booking. Amazing vista with olive trees and vineyards. You can see why it is a painter or photographers dream. Duccio was an amazing host who answered the many questions we had. He was very attentive and even showed us all about his vineyards and wine press attached to the property. We even got lucky enough to witness the start of the harvesting. We had an amazing dinner made for us by Aurola and she even cleaned everything up! One thing to make clear is that you definitely need a car. We are walkers and thought it would be easy to walk everywhere but that is not the case. The villa is a bit off the main road with paved and unpaved roads so it is recommended. A taxi ride is $15 euro one way so expect at least $30 roundtrip. Also we ate mainly at the villa and made many trips to the coop so the car was handy for that. The pool was very refreshing and clean. We also had cute visitors such as the local cats and a very small fox would come by at night. Friendly but kept his distance. We took the train to Florence one day. Train station is about a 15 minute car ride from villa then train ride is 1-1/2 hours to Florence approximately. Lovely way to see some little towns. Note that we traveled roundtrip out of Fiumicino airport in Rome because of visiting Rome before coming to Siena but It was a 3 hour drive back to airport so Florence would be the way to leave from if you were to stay here. All in all an amazing vacation! Can't wait to open the olive oil and wine we brought back from the villa! Thanks again Duccio!

Owner's Response: Dear Donna, thank you for your kind words. You were really nice family and it was a pleasure to host you in my house. I am very happy because, what you said, it is exactly my target, i.e. to make our guests live a bit of life in the Tuscan tradition. I hope to see you again in the near future, ciao Duccio

Tuscan Reality

  • 3 of 5

We arrived at Villa Santa Virginia with our children and grand children for a special Tuscany holiday only to be greeted with the comment, " we have bad news, the weather will continue to be over 100 degrees for your stay". We knew it was hot but surely there would have been extra preparation made by the owners of the Villa to enable their guests to be comfortable during this unusual weather. The house was very hot during the day and miserable at night for sleeping. One fan was put in each bedroom for comfort yet this was hardly enough ventilation. No fans were supplied downstairs. We tried to be vigilant about our situation but the only relief was the swimming pool and the special view. Because of the hot house, we decided to depart early from our one week rental.

The reason we were interested in renting the Villa was because it was listed air conditioned so we knew we would be comfortable, yet we learned that it was not, but with the firm assurance from the proprietor that the house was always cool due to the thick walls and that August temperatures were lower than July with night temperatures around 18/20 C. We were deeply disappointed because of the information we received and what we experienced was not what was expected.

A list is provided below addressing issues about rental property 1636667:

Air conditioned was listed on the amenities list but was promptly changed Aug 6 on the website after the proprietor was shown the amenities list.

A near by air conditioned apartment for two was offered to us at full price, and was finally negotiated to a lower price by a family member who reminded the proprietor of the situation we walked into. We took the extra space to help a 3 yr old and his parents sleep better.

Be prepared for extra fees.

Mattresses and pillows were very hard

Squeaky bed springs in one room

Towels provided once a week only

Washer and Dryer needed instructions

Kitchen refrigerator not working (used refrigerator in wash room)

Coffee machine very old, very slow, frustrating

The proprietor needs to provide an organized expense voucher system to present to renters rather than appearing daily, waiting for euro payments.

Proprietor supplied a contact number for assistance so there was no reason to appear each morning.

Essential to have a car due to remote location

What was great:

Very clean, well taken care of villa with nice bathrooms

Nice sheets

Enjoyabe pool

Stellar view

Great chef meal outside at night

Owner's Response: Dear John and family, We are very understanding of the situation. We do our best to make sure that our guests are always comfortable and have the best vacation possible. We are sorry that you’ve left not completely satisfied, regardless of our efforts to accommodate your requests. By sharing our houses with our guests we give them the chance to live the authentic Italian experience while providing them with all the necessary to feel at home. This is why, for example, the Villa has more than one type of coffee machine (the classic Moka, an American machine, a boiler, etc). The traditional Moka is slower than the American one. It’s just the way it is, this is how the coffee is made in Italy, this is the experience you have to be open to. But, if the traditional Moka doesn’t make you happy, there are others coffee machine in the Villa for your use. We simply can’t make the traditional Moka boil quicker. This is one example, but the same could be said for the beds, refrigerators, laundry, dryer, etc…. There are plenty of options for different amenities in the Villa and everyone is welcome to use what’s best for them. For what concerns the weather, you must understand that Tuscany can be warm in the summer during the day. On the other hand, the temperature drops to approx. 66 F (20 Celsius) at night, even during the hottest week of the season. This is one reason why AC in Italy has never become as widespread as it is in other Countries. We ask all our guests to read the description of the house that clearly states that the AC is available only in the Dependance, on top of pointing it out in our emails. But, as you mentioned, we made all the possible efforts to make you more at ease, e.g. providing extra fans, arranging the Depandance last minute at a discounted rate. Lastly, it’s always helpful to remind that every tourist facility must pay a tourist tax per every guest for every day of staying. Making the exception of coming every day to collect the taxes, instead of collecting it all at once at check-in as we usually do, was just another way of showing our understanding of your situation. If you ever decided to return we’d be glad to show our hospitality. We thank you for your review, any feedback help make us improve, Ciao, Duccio,

Our stay at the Villa exceeded my expectations!

  • 5 of 5

This past week my family of 12 gathered for a family reunion at a Villa Santa Virginia. The views from the Villa are beyond description. The majesty of Tuscany combined with the complete privacy of the Villa exceeded all expectations. The children were entertained by the pool, ping pong table, etc. The grounds so immense, the nightly games on the lawn became a must. Each bedroom with its own bathroom made life amazingly comfortable. The lack of air conditioning was not a problem. The nights cool down and each room had a fan. We were all comfortable. Duccio was the perfect host making sure we were well taken care of. Just a short distance from a Sienna, the perfect location to enjoy Tuscany! Amazing memories!!!

Surpassed all expectations

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 5 women, checking a dream vacation to Tuscany off our bucket list. We could not have been more thrilled with the Santa Virginia house on the estate of Tenuta Larnianone. The house itself was amazing. Each of us had our own spacious bedroom and private bathroom. The bathrooms were well appointed, something that 5 women appreciated very much. The kitchen was a large old farm kitchen with all the modern amenities and was well equipped. There was also a small washer and dryer that we used a few times. We had a bit of a learning curve figuring out how to run these machines, which were a little different from the ones back in the US.

But even more wonderful than the house was the breathtaking scenery. Some days all we wanted to do was pull up a chair and drink in the gorgeous view of the valley below us and the grape vines and olive groves all around us.

Our landlord, Duccio, was a delight. He was a most attentive host, from the day we first arrived to be greeted with a bottle of his wine, a loaf of bread, salami, and fresh fruit. He was very accomodating to any of our requests, and gave us lots of tips about places to visit and things to see on our visit. Duccio can also arrange a cooking class or a dinner prepared in the home. We arranged, through him, for a chef named Monica to prepare a Tuscan dinner for us on our last night. Our only regret was that we waited until the last night for that dinner because there were so many left overs. We could have had a few more meals on the delicious leftovers. Another tip Duccio gave us was a recommendation to contact Texi Tours for any travel/ tour needs we might have. We were quite happy with Francesca from Texi. She arranged our transportation to and from the airport in Florence and also some private tours we requested. I would highly recommend them.

In summary, this place was like something out of a fairy tale or a movie set. I would love to take my family back there someday. There would be plenty of room for a larger group. Besides the 6 bedrooms in the house, there is a small guest house right across the yard and an apartment attached to the house with a separate entrance for extra guests. These are only rented to groups requiring more rooms than are available in the main house.

We were just up the road from Siena,, a beautiful trip on country roads, about a 4 mile drive. We rented a car during our stay and visited several of the surrounding towns .Highly recommend this house!

Owner's Response: Dear Connie, thank you for your kind words. I am happy that you spent a nice period with us. It is so rare, today, to have some serene and pleasant moments! I am happy you are planning to come back and I suggest to come during Palio time (on 2nd July or on 16th August). It is a period where the medieval history of Siena come back again. I am looking forwards to hearing from you soon. A warm embrace to all of you, Ciao, Duccio
