|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
Situated overlooking the village of Drimiskos and the Libyan sea, with a backdrop of majestic mountains. From the house you can see the Island of Gavdos, the most southerly point in Europe. The house stands alone in its own large plot, surrounded by trees, secluded and private.
Situated in an unspoilt area with excellent local cuisine, it was recently described in a Guardian Newspaper article as “like stepping back in time.”
A two minute walk to the excellent Kafeneon and natural Springs.
There are 2 double bedrooms with views to the mountains at the side and back of the house and secluded terraces for outdoor dining, sunbathing & relaxing. The bedrooms are simply decorated with ample storage. Bedding (Linen) is provided. There is a modern, newly decorated bathroom with a small bath, a powerful shower, toilet and hand basin, this also houses the washing machine. A spacious comfortable lounge leads to outside terrace/dining area with views to the sea.
From the terraces you can relax and watch the sun set over the sea & Plakias mountain range, watch birds of prey hovering above, close your eyes and hear nothing but the nature around you. At night, you can lie outside and watch shooting stars and the incredible views of the Milky Way, which this area is famous for.
A further outside area has Olive and fruit trees, where you are welcome to pick lemons, oranges, mandarins, artichokes, almonds and other seasonal fruit & vegetables. There are mature grape vines with both white and black grapes. All this produce is organic.
In 5-10 minutes by car in either direction are traditional family run tavernas situated right on the beach serving good local fare and freshly caught fish.
Ideal Retreat: This would also be an perfect location for writers, artists, walkers and as a place just to get away from it all!
Drimiscos in Southern Crete
This area of Crete was also featured in the Sunday Times “Beat a path to the heart of secret Crete” It is the area of coast between Agia Galini and Plakias.
Drimiscos is a traditional working village and provides the setting for a unique holiday experience and the ultimate place to unwind. With no large villages let alone towns nearby, the sky at night is a further revelation with a vast and dazzling canopy of stars, seemingly close enough to touch.
Apart from the occasional passing car, the village is amazingly peaceful and by day you can clearly hear the tinkling of goat bells on the nearby hillside. By night it’s even quieter and the sound of silence is almost tangible, save for the occasional soft hoot of a Skops Owl.
A Brief History of Drimiscos & Surrounding Area
The village of Drimiscos dates back to 2.600-2.000BC It has a population of around 100 people and is a protected traditional working village with a long rich history.
This old settlement is recorded in the Venetian censi of the 16th and 17th centuries as well as in the Turkish and Egyptian censi.
This Southern coast is know as Gialia and in Greek mythology the Islands of Dionysios, also know as Paximadia form part of the mythical region and belonged to the God of wine, Dioysios. You can see the 2 Islands of Paximadia as you head towards the beaches of Ligres and Triopetra.
On a clear day looking and directly opposite the house you can also see the Island of Gavdos, which is the most Southern point in Europe, to the far right the Bay of Plakias and the White Mountains. This is considered an Eco area, and in Thomas Hardy's words.....it really is Far from The Madding Crowd.
La maison est agréable, très propre, au calme, loin de la foule.
De jolies petites plages à découvrir avec des restaurants à prix très doux au bord de l'eau.
Mini-market avec maxi services au village de Kérames.
Déconnection totale !
Nous espérons y retourner
The place is great beautiful peaceful and not crowdy.
Never too hot because of the wind. The night are cool. No mosquitos no bees...
The house is very confotrable !
It is a very good place !
Very formidable !
We LOVED everything about our stay. The home is tidy and traditional with plenty of outdoor space surrounding the home. Very bright and airy during the day and night, surrounded by lovely smell of sage and the sounds of insects of goats. Located in a small village (with an excellent and friendly taverna nearby), it is an easy drive to some beautiful beaches (Triopetra, Agia Galini) and larger towns (Plakia, Spili). Absolutely wonderful in every way; we hope to go back soon!
Great our stay was really great.
The house is very well located upon a hill in front of the sea.
It's very well equiped with all you need. The terrasse is the main room !!! so magic.
The site is so calm, so peaceful, so beautiful.
The place to be if you like to escape crowd.
it 's a little paradise !!!!
Thank you so much.
Lovely setting with wonderful scenery and beaches close at hand. New shop in the next village was a real advantage and plenty of good local restaurants to choose from. Local beach was lovely for swimming and was practically deserted most days!
Kim's house is nice. The balconies and terraces to enjoy the sun ( or shade !) at all hours of the day. And that , quiet. Only a few goats pass by neighbors. During our stay , there was a lot of wind , which seems unusual in this season. The location of the house is well placed to be able to shine in the region and discover deserted and wonderful beaches, impressive mountain scenery .
Located in a remote part of Crete, in an area of outstanding natural beauty and far from the crowds of tourists. Under an hours’ drive from the historic town of Rethymno with Venetian fortress, museum and markets. Just 20 minutes away is the town of Spili with its famous springs, shops, banks, health centre and tavernas.
Explore the unspoilt beaches and hidden coves. Visit the ancient monastery of Preveli and the beautiful Palm beach and gorge. Family run tavernas with home cooked traditional food and fresh fish are dotted along the coastline. Visit the fishing village of Agia Galini where you can book boat tours and enjoy the shops in the lanes leading to the port. A short drive away is the impressive gorge of Agios Antonios.
The Minoan sites of Faistos, recently discovered port at Komos, and Roman city of Gortys are all within easy reach.
Nearby is the Amari valley, where traditional mountain villages, with their Plane trees, cool springs, narrow whitewashed lanes and kafenions are untouched by tourism, as is the village of Drimiskos. Crete is dotted with natural Springs, providing water rich in minerals, such as magnesium and calcium. One of these can be found outside the kafeneon in Drimiskos.
An area rich in wildlife, flora and fauna, where you can find rare wild orchids and watch eagles soar overhead.
