Why Short Let Space chose Bicester

Can you recall the picture perfect cottage that Bridget Jones’ parents live in? Or remember the chocolate-box hideaway that Cameron Diaz’s character escaped to in The Holiday? Now imagine the achingly cool, escape-from-the-city kind of cottage that your (imaginary) art collecting uncle might own as a holiday home. Well, allow me to introduce you to Coopers Cottage in Lower Heyford, Oxfordshire (insert hyperlink - it’s all those things, and more.

Coopers Cottage in Lower Heyford, Oxfordshire is a beautifully decorated and lovingly restored three bedroom thatch cottage that is steeped in history; and if you’re looking to discover a hidden secret of the Oxfordshire Wolds with endless access to some of the finest countryside England has to offer, located a short journey from Oxford and London (with all of the cultural and historical significance these two cities have to offer), AND down the road from the chic outlet shopping experience that is Bicester Village, then look no further than the rural idyll that is Coopers Cottage.

What makes this cottage unique

Despite its tremendous transport links (road, train, and superb access to a network of cycle paths, footpaths, bridleways, and canal towpaths), Lower Heyford has got to be one of the most picturesque, traditionally English villages in the whole of Oxfordshire, and oozes rarely found peace and tranquillity.

To my mind, there are few better ways to soak up the true spirit of a place than to stroll around a village at dusk peeking through windows before curtains are drawn. Or, for the less voyeuristic, taking a walk along historic footpaths, and Lower Heyford and the surrounding area are chequered with them.

In addition to the many local walks, two of the finest examples of Capability Brown landscaping are right on the doorstep in the form of Rowsham Hall and Park and Blenheim Palace. Lower Heyford is a stone’s throw from the former hunting grounds and magnificent palace at Blenheim (a masterpiece of 18th Century Baroque architecture, home to the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill).

The village of Lower Heyford is 13km from Junction 9 of the M40 and just one and a half hours from London. Heyford railway station is 15 minutes walk from the cottage. There is a rail service between the nearby Heyford station and London Paddington via Oxford.

Things to do

-Woodstock & Blenheim Palace - the birth place of Winston Churchill. Lots of information on line.

-Oxford - the train in the village runs between Banbury & Oxford and comes approximately every 2 hours in both directions. It takes 12 minutes to get to Oxford.

-Oxford Canal - on the far side of the playing field opposite the cottage can be found the Oxford Canal. Turn right and there is a lovely circular walk to Upper Heyford and back taking you either side of the canal. Turn left and within 5 minutes you will be at Heyford train station and also Heyford Wharf. If you are feeling more adventurous it is a 14 mile walk direct to Oxford City centre along the canal and 12 miles to Banbury. Both walks end close to the train station and an easy journey home!

-The Wharf - Oxfordshire Narrowboats are based at the wharf and canal boats can be hired here by the day, great fun! There is also a small shop selling basics like milk and butter and a cafe called Kizzie's at the wharf, serving light meals and afternoon tea as well as breakfast - highly recommended. www.oxfordshirenarrowboats.com

-Bicester Village - needs no introduction for most people, but in case you are not a convert, it is an outlet village selling designer clothes at cut down prices and is a 10 minute drive away! There is also a large Tesco supermarket next to Bicester Village. If you need food shopping as well we suggest you park here and walk over to Bicester Village, although there is a two hour limit on parking at Tesco.

-Rousham - if you drive or walk across the bridge out of Lower Heyford towards Woodstock and look left you will see Rousham House. A beautiful, privately owned country house. The gardens are open most of the year to look around (no children under 15!). Possible to walk to Rousham in 20 minutes.
