I am continuing on the 60 year farming tradition of my family. I have lived here all my life and we have had race horses, brood mares and foals, along with cattle and sheep over the years..
James purchased this chateau / country house in 1955
Smithstown and the guest accommodation have been owned by my family since 1953
My 3 siblings and I had wonderful freedom roaming the fields and generally getting up to as much mischief as possible. Most of our days were spent either on our ponies, climbing trees, fishing in our local little stream at the bottom of the farm, jumping on the haycocks or playing hide and seek in the surrounding woodland.
Unique benefits of this haven of tranquillity include peace, a very safe inviornment, wide open spaces to run free, with birdsong being the only sound you will hear and yet we are only a short distance from all the excitement you may require or for a wonderful relaxing holiday, the choice is yours
We enjoyed our stay in this very unique property. Secluded and blissfully quiet, but only ten minutes to the town of Dunshaughlin to shop for all our needs. Just a side note here ; the Supervalue Store is one of the best supermarkets I've ever shopped in! The house is large, very warm and with plenty of hot water for our family of six. The children had an absolute ball charging around the enormous walled garden. Very handy to Tayto Park ( a great day out) which was our prime reason for visiting this part of Ireland. We also visited Dublin and Malahide. Many thanks to James for his precise driving directions and his warm welcome.
It's a child friendly spot, ideal for our infant son. Close to the excellent Tayto adventure park, Hill of Tara, Trim Castle and more. M50. Is about 10 minutes. 5 minute drive to small town if Dunshaughlin with a good supermarket.
A very peaceful and well situated family domain right in the heart of Co Meath. Close enough to Dublin by M3 and M50 and then to the airport. Also close to every commodities and a lot of tourism sites, especially along the Boyne Valley. Also 2 hours from Galway and 1h40 from Belfast. Easy to reach by road with the precise guidance of James. With the warm welcome by Avril, James sister, we immediately felt at home. Beds were done, all the furnitures in place. The backyard is huge and completely secured so you can let the kids run as they want. The frontyard is also huge, with an electric gate and you get a closed courtyard.
The cottage is full of tourism documentation but the best advices came from Avril who is such a nice person.
We spent there a wonderful but too short week and we highly recommend James house!
Smithstown House dates back to the early 1700s and is the birth place of Sir William Johnson who is immortalised in a biography called 'White Savage' written by Fintan O'Sullivan which details the the life of this great man. In the spring of 1737 Sir William Johnson departed from Smithstown to join his uncle in upstate New York and the Mohawk valley in the USA taking with him 30 local people from the surrounding area of Dunshaughlin, Drumree and Warrenstown. He was named 'White Savage' by the Indian tribes in the area due to his fair and just dealings with them and at a later stage he married a woman from the local Indian tribe.
Historical sights abound in the Smithstown area and the following are all within a 5 to 30 minute drive. Included in the the Boyne valley are the Hill of Tara, Kells, Oldcastle., Loughcrew Megalithic Site. Newgrange World Heritage site. Trim Castle where 'Braveheart' was filmed ,Killeen Castle the Solheim Cup Golf venue , Dunsany Castle still occupied by its original owners and Slane Castle ancestral home of Lord Henry Mountcharles which is open to the public and is a great international concert venue.
Quiet country walks and cycling are on your doorstep too.
Children will enjoy the theme park Tayto Park at Curragha. or the beautiful grounds and exotic animals of Dublin Zoo at the Phoenix Park.
Local shops in Dunshaughlin are small and inviting while if you fancy for big shopping why not try Blanchardstown a short 15 minute drive or venture in Dublin city centre.
The 109 Bus which is a 10/15 minute walk at the bottom of the road runs regularly to Dublin and Navan.
Smithstown house until very recently was a hub of horse breeding and racing with many local racecourses on its doorstep which include regular Steeplechasing at Fairyhouse, Navan, & Bellewstown.
Bellewstown has a real 'olden days' feeling to it due to its wonderful summer race meetings in both July & August annually. Racing also takes place at Punchestown & Naas which are slightly further afield, but still a quick drive away.
Most of all, Smithstown House offer its guests, peace, tranquillity and safety with the only sound to be heard is the birdsong.
