Overview

About the property

Peaceful, remote woodland setting - quiet walks, wonderful views and wildlife

Use of the adjacent shepherd's hut comes for free when you book delightful Curlew Cottage, situated at Meadshaw Farm, Roberton, Hawick in the Scottish Borders. The cottage and surrounding area is a true haven of peace and tranquility. You will find the cottage 2 minutes up a good forest track, nestled between Meadshaw Forest and the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders.

Remote and peaceful - Curlew Cottage and Shepherd's Hut is a real "get away from it all."

Curlew Cottage: A recent conversion of the stone barn at Meadshaw Farm, the cottage accommodates up to four people. There is a double bedroom with double doors out to a small patio, a mezzanine bedroom (restricted headroom) with 2 single beds, shower room, utility room with washing machine and dishwasher, and a wonderfully light and airy kitchen/dining room with mezzanine bedroom above. The kitchen is well equipped with all mod cons (including remote controlled blinds for the Velux windows). It has a dining area and comfy seating area with freeview TV, DVD, CD and (slow) internet connection. There is no mobile phone connection in the immediate area. Throughout the cottage, the natural stone floors are cosy and warm underfoot, heated by an external log burning boiler which also heats the nearby farmhouse, and provides as much hot water as you want.

The Shepherd's Hut: The hut is next to the cottage, and provides a unique extra space, for relaxing or even to spend the night should you wish! With the wood-burning stove lit, it is toasty warm. A ready supply of logs and kindling will be available for your stay. The seating in the shepherd's hut converts to a comfy extra large single bed. It has tea/coffee making facilities, is simply furnished, and accessed by wooden steps.

Outside: There is a paved sitting area with lovely views of the hills and the river below. There is also an under cover BBQ and seating area housed in the old hay barn opposite the cottage, which can be used if the weather is wet. There is also plenty of parking. Visitors are also welcome to explore the farm, and picnic on the river bank.

The owners live 15 metres away in Meadshaw Farmhouse, and are on hand to give advice if required, but are equally happy to leave you to enjoy the peace and quiet, this being one of those rare places where you will hear no traffic noise and see only the stars at night.

Surrounding Area: Immediately from the door there are miles of waymarked forest tracks and paths which are perfect for walking, cycling and horse riding. The surrounding hills are also on your doorstep, and provide lovely walks to the nearby hill lochs - Broadlea and Branxholme Easter and Wester Lochs. The river below the cottage has several pebbly "beach" areas and pools where you can enjoy a paddle or a swim!

Depending on the season, you may well be rewarded with sightings of the abundant wildlife around the cottage, from the native red squirrel, otter and salmon, to local woodland birds such as the siskin and woodpecker. There are also osprey and gosshawk in the area, and in the Springtime, you will hear the skylark, oyster-catcher and curlew from the cottage.

Livestock is kept at the farm, including rare-breed hebridean sheep, chickens, ducks and ponies. Cyclists may store their bikes in one of the barns, and grazing and stabling (at an extra charge) is available for horse riders bringing their own horses. Canoes/paddles/helmets are available at a small charge.

Activities in the Area: For cyclists and walkers, Meadshaw Forset joins up with nearby 10,000 acre Craik Forest and there are miles of forest tracks to explore from your door. Further afield, more mountain biking is available at Innerliethen, Glentress (Peebles), Newcastleton and Keilder Water. Kids will love our forest zip wire and trampoline. Canoes are available (at a small charge) for use on the nearby river or pond. Horse riding and golf are avaiable at Ashkirk (7 miles) where there is also a pub and restaurant.

Hawick, the local woollen mill town is 10 miles away. It has restaurants, supermarkets and shops, a leisure centre and a lovely cinema, cafe and heritage centre. Hawick is known for its' cashmere shops, its' tradition of rugby and the annual Common Riding Festival. For a day out, you can visit one of the beautiful Border Abbey towns, such as Jedburgh or Melrose, or take the scenic 1.5 hour drive to Edinburgh by car. The new Borders railway will get you to Edinburgh in under an hour from Galashiels.

Green Tourism: At Meadshaw Farm we are working towards environmentally friendly living. All white goods at the cottage are A rated or better, cleaning and washing products provided are plant based, heating/hot water is fuelled by local, sustainably managed woodland and the garden and farm are managed without commercial fertilisers.

Provided for you: All linen/towels, heating and logs for the shepherd's hut are included, and one well-behaved dog is welcome downstairs. Smoking is not permitted within the cottage. Free range organic eggs are provided in the cottage along with local garden produce (when in season).

About Mrs Daniele Friell

Daniele and Bill have run Meadshaw Farm, a smallholding with a flock of rare breed hebridean sheep, for over 10 years. They are keen to let you enjoy the peace and quiet of Curlew Cottage which is approx 15 metres from the farmhouse. They are happy to advise walkers, cyclists and horse riders on routes to take, and personal cycle guiding and horse guiding (for those who bring their own horse) can be offered if required. Children are welcome and there is plenty to do provided they do not want super fast broadband. There are acres of woodland, ponds, river, canoes, zip wire and trampoline.

Mrs Daniele Friell purchased this cottage in 1999

Why Mrs Daniele Friell chose Hawick

Wonderful off-the-beaten-track location, with very little noise or light pollution. Here you will see more trees, sheep and stars than people! However the local town of Hawick is only 20 minutes by car and there you can find plenty of restaurants, a cinema and a good sports centre, with good sized pool and recently refurbished flume.

What makes this cottage unique

Lots of sky, space, views, fresh air. You will have the place to yourself!

Beautiful cottage !

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 5 days at the cottage. The scenery was utterly breathtaking and the cottage was just beautiful. Spotlessly clean and had everything we needed. Homemade cakes were a lovely welcoming treat, plus fresh eggs and wine in the fridge, we felt so lucky. The river below the cottage was amazing, our son loved swimming and playing in it for hours upon end. Our hosts made us feel very welcome and we’d love to visit again soon. Xxx

Absolutely lovely couldnt fault anything.

  • 5 of 5

The property was very well presented and very clean and tidy. Danielle and Bill were very welcoming and provided us with fresh duck eggs on request. We had never been to that part of scotland before and were eager to explore the area. The weather could have been better but it didnt stop us getting out everyday.

Perfect bliss

  • 5 of 5

My son and myself, were lucky enough to have a three day stay here last week. We were greeted by a lovely hand written note, welcoming us to curlew cottage. that was a nice touch, even more so the flap jacks and duck eggs. I know it,s mentioned in a lot of reviews, but Danielle and Bill really have thought of everything you could possibly need . The cottage is spotlessly clean. The WIFI is a little slow but does all you need, to keep up to date with emails and such like. I,ve stayed in many cottages over the last few years and the WIFI is no different. There are walks straight from the door, which was perfect for my two Labradors. I would say the cottage is ideal for couples or small families alike.Danielle and Bill are there if you need them, if you don,t they aren,t intrusive. All in all a perfect break, surrounded by beautiful scenery and really nice people. Would love to go back, sometime in the winter months.

Super cottage in a quiet relaxed setting

  • 5 of 5

We were made to feel very welcome , and enjoyed the duck eggs and home baking on our arrival. The cottage is modern, but with lots of character. We loved the shepherd's hut behind the cottage, great place for playing cards in the evening.

Well fitted out and comfortable cottage in a lovely out of the way location

  • 5 of 5

We had some fears that with the snow we would not be able to get to the cottage, but Danielle told us that she would pick us up at the road end in her 4x4 but as things turned out we were able to drive there ok. On arrival Danielle was most helpful, telling us we could use the Shepherd's Hut as well as the main cottage. This we did on our second night there, lighting the stove that had been laid for us, it was great!

The main cottage was well fitted out and most comfortable with the underfloor heating, and the power shower was fantastic!

All in all we spent three peaceful, relaxing days there and wish we could have stayed longer.

Perfect getaway from it all cottage. Lovely hosts. Two dogs we fell in love with. Spectacular views.

  • 5 of 5

An amazing location, a beautiful cottage with everything we needed. This included when we arrived homemade flapjack and mince pies. It was very clean, the heated flooring a luxuary. The rainfalll shower wonderful post our daily walk. Daniele and bill were just lovely. It snowed they provided the children with sledges. They took the girls to feed the animals and allowed them to walk and play with the dogs every day they were in heaven. We all fell in love with the dogs Tilly and Tarka ❤️. I almost forgot the Shepard’s hut my husband got to make fire every night. This venue is perfect if you want a tech free break and enjoy walks in the woods. Perfect for young families we loved it. Only improvement would be a request for a sofa to snuggle up on in front of the telly. Thank you for a truly wonderful holiday x
