About Mrs Daniele Friell
Daniele and Bill have run Meadshaw Farm, a smallholding with a flock of rare breed hebridean sheep, for over 10 years. They are keen to let you enjoy the peace and quiet of Curlew Cottage which is approx 15 metres from the farmhouse. They are happy to advise walkers, cyclists and horse riders on routes to take, and personal cycle guiding and horse guiding (for those who bring their own horse) can be offered if required. Children are welcome and there is plenty to do provided they do not want super fast broadband. There are acres of woodland, ponds, river, canoes, zip wire and trampoline.
Mrs Daniele Friell purchased this Cottage in 1999
Why Mrs Daniele Friell chose Hawick
Wonderful off-the-beaten-track location, with very little noise or light pollution. Here you will see more trees, sheep and stars than people! However the local town of Hawick is only 20 minutes by car and there you can find plenty of restaurants, a cinema and a good sports centre, with good sized pool and recently refurbished flume.

Idyllic and peaceful retreat
Curlew Cottage was the perfect idyllic and peaceful retreat after an incredible raid trip around Scotland.
The cottage itself is welcoming and cosy, as well as clean and well equipped. And the Shepherd’s hut is an excellent place to relax and warm up after a walk and though the forests.
The owners are incredibly friendly and have a great knowledge of plenty of good walks in the area.
The kids loved the zip wire, trampoline and the hideouts in the forest just behind the cottage.
Would definitely recommend this place.
Thank you so much Scott for taking the time to write a lovely review for Curlew Cottage and Shepherd's Hut. We are so pleased you and the family had a great stay here. You would be very welcome to return for another break. Best wishes, Daniele and Bill
Forest walks and cosy evenings
This was our second visit to Curlew Cottage, we love it here as there are beautiful walks in the forest, right on your doorstep. The cottage is cosy and the shepherds hut is a bonus to play games in in the evening. Thanks to Daniele and Bill (as well as Tilly and Tarka), for being such welcoming hosts. We will be back!
Peace and Beauty in the Scottish Country
Curlew Cottage fulfilled our needs extremely well. The bedrooms were comfortable, the shower wonderfuly hot, the kitchen had everything we needed to prepare our meals, and we truly appreciated the use of the washer and drying rack (we used it often). Our hosts were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a quiet evening in their Shepherd's Wagon with a warm fire while reading our books, to add to our Scottish experience. Would recommend a stay to anyone looking for a place to "get away from it all".
A Very Satisfied Couple From Wisconsin, USA
Thanks for taking the time to review Curlew Cottage and Shepherd's Hut, Antone and Laurie. It was a real pleasure to host you both, and we are delighted you enjoyed your stay at our cottage and in the Scottish Borders. Thanks for your recommendation. Best wishes, Daniele and Bill
It’s such a lovely, warm, clean cottage in a beautiful location with the kindest host. My partner and I stayed there as part of our trip to Kielder Observatory, it’s remote enough to enjoy bit of star gazing all from comfort master bed; through the skylight. We looked forward to staying again.
Thanks for your kind review Selima. I am so glad the clouds cleared on your last evening, and you finally managed to see some stars. You would be very welcome to come again. Best wishes, Daniele

Cycling - Mountain bike and trail riding in Craik Forest is on the doorstep (see email@example.com) and Glentress (Peebles) Innerliethen and Newcastleton are all within 35 miles (see 7stanes Mountain Biking)
Equestrian - The Ian Stark Equestrian Centre is 35 minutes away, near Selkirk and hosts an array of equestrian events and competitions, as well as offering pony trecking and riding lessons for all abilities. Nearby Stable Life also offers riding lessons. Local Common Ridings are a major equestrian attraction, which you can join in for free, either with your own horse or by pre-booking a horse for the day. These "ride-outs" take place during the summer months at most of the Border towns.
Walking - As well as waymarked local walks from the door, there are a number of long distance footpaths such as the Reivers Route, Borders Abbeys Way and the Southern Upland Way. In Scotland there is a "right to roam", entitling walkers, cyclists and horse-riders to explore the countryside (subject to sensible rules) without having to keep to marked footpaths.
Gardeners - There are a number of excellent local gardens and nurseries to visit, such as the newly refurbished Wilton Park Walled Garden in Hawick, and further afield, Dawyck, Kailzie and Monteviot Gardens, to name a few.
Children - Trampoline and small kids zip-wire available on site. Playpark and zip wire available at 5* attraction, Bowhill House, Selkirk. Go Ape, Rock UK and Ryze trampolining are all available within a 10 - 40 miles radius.
Castles, Country Houses and ruined Abbeys (Melrose,Jedburgh, Kelso, Dryburgh) are plentiful - Traquair, Bowhill, Mellerstain, Mary Queen of Scots Tower House and Floors.
Golfing - Hawick, Minto by Hawick and Ashkirk are all accessible.
Cities - Edinburgh, Carlisle and Newcastle are all accessible by car (or train/bus and taxi) in under 2 hours.
