We had the trip of a lifetime! We LOVED our Villa Ionio in Crotone! It was exactly as described but much more. There were two kitchens and for us, it was perfect as we love to cook! Kitchens were so complete with more that we ever expected. We had 4 bedrooms, 3 with AC and one without which worked perfectly as one in our group doesn't like AC!! Spacious and comfortable with amazing views. There were only a couple of small things to consider. The villa is very private which is great but up a steep hill so walking to the beach which is very close was fine going down but coming back up on a very hot afternoon made it an uncomfortable walk for some of us. Not a problem as we had cars so we just drove to the beach (3 minute drive) and had no problem with parking. A car is most necessary. We found the "free beaches" to be less desirable so we opted for the sections where you "rent" your umbrellas and chairs and that was well worth it! The cost was about 14.00 EUR for two umbrellas and 3 chairs for the whole day.
David was also wonderful to us. He met us and made sure we had everything we needed. He treated us to a local pizza dinner at Pizza Paradiso that was one of the best and much more than just pizza! The few time we had to call him he was always available and took care of any requests. Also Graziella and her husband were delightful and friendly when they came to check on us and do some light cleaning.
We loved all the places we ate! The Pizza Paradiso was great, and we also LOVED the Gambero Rosa which is on the beach. The mussel appetizer was so amazing we had it many times and went home and recreated it (almost)! Both have outdoor dining and the evenings do cool down enough to enjoy eating outside.
The only small negative things that I can think of were that we had some issues with the gate, it opened fine but always a problem to close it and David was going to take care of that. Also if wifi is super important, it sometimes goes down. We didn't care because it was not a big focus for us. Lastly, there could have been a few more towels but we never asked for more as there was a wonderful washer and clothes rack so we did fine. It was so hot that our laundry sometimes dried in an hour in the sun!
All in all, this is a perfect, fabulous villa and I hope we can return in the future. I would not hesitate to send anyone there. Calabria is wonderful, friendly and much less expensive than the north! It was our beach vacation in Paradise!
If you're familiar with the south coast of Calabria and particularly the province of Crotone, then you'll be aware of the wonderfully rustic nature of the culture, general infrastructure and the historical interest of the area - as well as, of course the food! Ciro wine and Sardella being top of my list!
We arrived very late at the villa in the early hours of the Sunday morning and our host David was kind enough to wait up to greet us at about 3am. There were meats, beers and wine left for us in the fridge, which was most welcome and the property fitted the description as per the details advertised. The property was clean and also visited by a cleaner and gardener to attend mainly to the outside areas of the property during our stay. They were very friendly and welcoming and like chatting to extended family after a few minutes of conversation.
The property is large and has a lot of facilities and perhaps could do with a little TLC to ensure that all internal appliances are working effectively in every area and a little updating to some of the bathroom accessories, but nothing that was a show stopper for us as a family. Issues we couldn't deal with were quickly addressed by David personally and remedied e.g. WIFI downtime (affecting the kids mainly!) and the odd power cut (which was outside anyone's control). The entrance to the property is governed by a metal motorised gate - which can get stuck sometimes in the midday hot temperatures, but does provide that extra layer of privacy and security for the property. It should be noted that the driveway for cars is quite steep, but there are also steps leading up to the property from the front gate.
With the heat of July, the air conditioning in the bedrooms and the hot tub/outside shower were used to full extent and certainly helped to cool everyone down. The outside seating/lounger areas provided more than enough capacity for our large family each day and evenings against the back drop of the mountainous hills behind the property.
Overall, I would definitely hire the property again. David was a most welcome host and on hand for any queries we had. So yes, a good customer service experience with true Calabrese hospitality!
The area has beautiful beaches not far from the villa and is steeped in history and nature. There are fresh fish markets opening in the evening with that afternoons catch and the ice cream is the best you'll taste - get out there and have a great holiday - we did!
Quindi prendere accordi precisi!
