La Cumbre is a pretty farmhouse lovingly restored by its owners (Spanish and American). It is found on a hillside organic farm above the Asturian coast in Western Asturias with spectacular views of the mountains in front, the valley below and the coast beyond. La Cumbre, true to its original nature and history, offers a rustic country setting complete with farm animals without neglecting any of the comforts of home. It is a quiet, rural location. While off the beaten path it is within minutes of beaches, villages and shopping. Walking trails lead off from the house to include the famous pilgrim route the 'Camino de Santiago', where you may enjoy more spectacular views of the Atlantic coast.
Couples! We offer special rates to couples outside July and August in La Cumbre and have smaller cottages available. Please see El Balcon #1613472 and El Pajar #443221.
A welcome pack is included containing wine, coffee, teas, bread, milk, sugar and eggs (when our chickens cooperate).
The Farmhouse: This two-story house has an open plan downstairs living/dining room and complete well-equipped kitchen, big sunny windows, rustic tile floor, exposed stone walls, wooden ceiling and a wood-burning stove. The kitchen is beautifully tiled in blue and white with white marble counter tops and sink. The house is nicely furnished with a mix of antiques and traditional Asturian pieces all working together to make for a comfortable stay. Upstairs is a complete bathroom with large bathtub/shower and four bedrooms. The bedrooms have the original chestnut floors, rugs, bedside tables, reading lamps, mirrors, chairs and plenty of storage space. The beds are one Queen, one Full and two Singles. One single room has a curtain door.
The Surroundings: Enjoy a day in the hammock, walk the hills or jump in the car and in only 10 minutes you can be on the beach. There are many to choose from, quiet and secluded to busy with all the amenities. In 20 minutes you can find yourself in the bustling fishing ports of Luarca and Cudillero where a wealth of local fish and seafood, as well as typical Asturian dishes await you. Just inland have a look into the past at the traditional lifestyles where life revolves around cows, both dairy and beef. Throughout the summer villages offer a 'fiesta' in honor of their patron saint with live bands, competitions, children's events and, of course, mass and a religious procession. Market days are not to be missed and arts and crafts shows are common in the summer. The cities of Aviles, Gijon and Oviedo are less than an hour away by car for nightlife, museums, the new aquarium, cultural events, and shopping. Take the narrow guage FEVE train instead of the car! Asturias is known for its natural beauty.
The Farm: Access to the property is up a steep and partially paved, mostly gravel road. It is a challenge to the unpracticed but easy enough to master. There is room on the side to park and walk if need be and Pepe is available to help. As with all good things in life the extra effort is well rewarded with beautiful views and a stunning setting.
Because we are committed to and enjoy our organic lifestyle our linens are washed in natural soaps and sun dried. The house has features which save on energy and firewood is provided for your warmth. We encourage recycling and the chickens are the first step in the composting process. We do not own a tractor or heavy farm machinery therefore the place is doubly safe for children since there is no traffic. Herbs and flowers are free for the picking and we are always happy to share the seasonal abundance of the garden. You are welcome to enjoy and explore the grounds. Pepe loves to share his enthusiasm for Asturias by helping with translations, reservations and tips on where to eat and what to see and do. There is a great deal of information in the house as well as in the 'Resource Center'. Asturias is full of pleasant surprises.
We stayed at this remarkably comfortable farmhouse for a week in early June 2014. The house was scrupulously clean, with a well-equipped kitchen. We arrived after 7:00 pm after driving from Bilbao, to find coffee, fresh local bread, wine, and organic eggs and lettuce from the farm waiting for us. The mountain views in the photos don't really do justice to the rural beauty that we saw every morning and evening as we lay in bed. The one-bedroom house on the farm was booked, and the owners offered this lovely, rustic (with new kitchen and bathroom) four-bedroom house to the two of us for the same rate, since we were there off-season. Though there are other houses on the property, we had complete privacy. We loved the house and looked forward to coming home to its warmth and charm every night. We spent days exploring Asturias; there is a large folder full of suggested day trips and activities, including restaurants, local markets, hiking, sports, children's activities, and historical sites. The owners, the very warm and welcoming Pepe and Lynne, made terrific suggestions for local restaurants and day trips. A week wasn't long enough (I recommend at least two) and we were genuinely very sad to leave.
All of the rooms are kitted out beautifully, and there is literally everything you could ever need. Lynn kept our rooms warm in the day, and made it a very comfortable stay. This is an absolutely stunning place, and not far from lots of beautiful villages on the sea and in the countryside – be sure to explore the local markets!
We've just returned from a fantastic stay. We've never been to Asturias before, but would strongly recommend it as a holiday destination, especially now the new motorway means that its very quick and easy to travel from the house (just a few km from the nearest junction) to virtually anywhere in Asturias. For beach lovers, the nearest (San Pedro) sandy beach is directly down the hill (about 15 mins in the car), but its perfectly easy to travel quickly to different beaches - we travelled to about 6 or 7 different beaches during our two week stay. We also explored the stunning local fishing villages such as Cudillero and Luarca, the old centres of Oviedo and Gijon, and the beautiful Somiedo national park.
The house itself is up a steep driveway, with spectacular views over the opposite hillside and down to the sea with lovely walks and runs right from the front door. It is immaculate, well furnished and equipped - we wanted for nothing during our stay - and the resource room kept us occupied in books, DVDs and beach equipment.
We were made very welcome by Lynn, who was helpful right from the first email, and when we arrived with suggestions on places to visit, local festivals etc. In short - highly recommended!
We have rented houses from owners in Europe for fifteen years, and this is our favorite of them all! From our first contact with Lynn, months before our arrival, through our return home, she has been gracious and helpful. We now consider Lyn and Pepe personal friends. Their advice and tips were always helpful and ensured that our two weeks were a perfect mix of interesting trips and relaxed downtime.
High in the hills above the sea, the house has spectacular views over quiet valleys. Sitting at the edge of the bluff in front of the house listening to the "silence" will be a lasting memory. The house is immaculate and well maintained. The kitchen is the best equipped we've seen (including a wok and immersion blender!). The living room is spacious and was welcoming on cold nights, thanks to the wood stove. Bedrooms are good sized, and the bathroom has a tankless hot water system, so there is no running out. (Electricity and gas are not metered by the owners, but guests should conserve these expensive resources).
We enjoyed Orviedo, with its cathedral, indoor food market and siderias. Our favorite nearby town is Luarca and we had very good meals at the Sport Bar, once in the dining room and, even more fun, in the bar area where we shared tapas with friendly locals. (Don't miss the goose neck barnacles!). Near the church is a small store selling costume jewelry made by the owner, whose daughter is most friendly. Many of our gifts for family were purchased there, including unique jeweled scarf clasps and bracelets. In Soto Luna, there is a fine bar cafe near the lighthouse with perfectly prepared fish, and the green hotel in Soto Luna is a cut above, blending local fare with more continental preparation. One note: the menu del dia is always the least expensive option, but these offer a LOT of food, usually starting with a very filling bean stew with sausage and pork. We found that for a few extra Euros we could share an excellent salad and order a single course off the menu which always was excellent, as is the house wine
We spent two wonderful weeks and did not exhaust all the interesting options in the area. This area is free of the large beachfront high rises which unfortunately plague much of southern Europe and is farm country with friendly and welcoming folks. We recommend this to folks wanting to decompress while visiting a unique area which is rich in culture and cuisine.
Thanks to Lynn, Pepe (and Lex)!

My husband and I, and another couple, rented La Cumbre for a week this fall, and had an absolutely fabulous time here. As the other reviewers have mentioned, it gives one the feeling of being all alone on the hill top, while still be only 10 minutes from towns and beaches. The views are spectacular!!! The house is very well equipped and cozy, with a nice fire to keep you warm if it gets cool. Lynn and Pepe are great hosts, taking the time to tell you about the area and about their property and making you feel like one of the family. Lynn and Lex even accompanied us on the first leg of our lonnnnng walk, making sure we were on the right track. Fresh eggs can be bought and fresh bread bought and delivered to your door!!
We walked the Camino right from our door...right down to the beach and back...a challenging but excellent hike. We visited Taramundi one day to see the knife museum and the old mills and had the Menu del dia at a local restaurant...one of our favourite days.
Many nights we cooked right at the house, enjoying the view and the peace and quiet.
Thanks so much, Lynn, for helping make our stay so memorable.
Back to the farm where we spent such a wonderful time last year.
The farmhouse is very large and a bit decadent for just the 2 of us - but why not.
Had such a lovely time - the house and the location are brilliant - and enhanced by the company of Lex - our temporary pet dog.
Looking for a quiet and peaceful place on the one hand and on a central place on the other hand for exploring the Spanish north, we were lucky to find the ideal place in La Cumbre. Though it seems to lie in the middle of nowhere and you can hardly find it on the map, it takes you only ten minutes to the highway from where you can easily reach all the attractions of Asturias. We were given a warm welcome by Lynn and Pepe, the owners, on their small organic farms in the hillside. They made La Cumbre such a peaceful and cosy home for us. My wife and my teenage daughters enjoyed relaxing on the farm, reading a book or two, enjoying the beautiful views of the nearby Asturian hills, take a walk with Lex, the friendly dog, or just watching the hens on their regular circle tour looking for food- really idyllic. At night you could hear the owls on their way through the valley. Every time we were looking for good advise, Lynn gave us a helping hand. When there is a local attraction worth visiting, you will be the first to know. So we were able to visit a very attractive local farmer`s market, and Lynn made it possible to reserve a visit in a world heritage stone age cave with beautiful paintings and scarvings. Thanks for that ! When you like to cook by your own, the house is very well equipped, and Lynn`s herb garden will be of special help for you. On rainy days, Lynn`s "ressource centre" will help you with books, DVD`s and games. The house is absolutely clean, and the views of the hills and the sea are really phantastic. If you are looking for activities, no problem either. In ten minutes time you`re on the highway, with beautiful beaches near at hand. My daughters enjoyed lying on a sandy beach as well as snorkeling- there is more than one a beach at hand for everybody. If you like hiking, Somiedo nature park is the place for you, where you will not find many people, but perhaps wolves and bears roaming in a scenery which seems to be taken right out of "The Lord of the rings". The towns of Oviedo, Gijon and Aviles can be reached in about an hour; we especilally liked the old town and the futuristic brandnew Niemeyer centre of Aviles. The pretty fishing villages of Cudillero and Luarca are about half an hour away, and if you`re looking for longer trips, Santiago de Compostela or the Picos of Europa make a wonderful day trip. We wanted to combine quietness and peace with the chance to explore Asturias and surroundings. La Cumbre was the place to go ! Thanks again !
Our property is ideally located above the Asturian coast with wonderful ever-changing views. We are only 5 kms from Novellana off the new A8 motorway.
Western Asturias is a region only now being discovered due to the new Cantabrican Motorway joining France with Portugal along the beautiful green Northern Coast. The locals are friendly and the food hearty and abundant. The protected coastline is unspoiled with many beaches varying in nature from sandy with all the amenities to rocky and secluded. The mountains join the sea in Asturias and there are many natural parks and walking trails. While Picos de Europa is a 3 hour drive from here, Somiedo Natural Park is closer, less visited and beautiful boasting Leonid Vultures and Brown Bears. Thatched mountain cottages add a magical effect to the landscape. Muniellos is a Biosphere Reserve with ancient oaks. Caves with prehistoric art are available to visit April - Sept. Reservations needed.
|Fees||No additional mandatory fees|
NB: The property is at the end of a partially paved drive (200m) which can seem challenging the first time up for those unaccustomed to mountain driving. It is completely manageable and a 4x4 is NOT at all necessary. There is plenty of parking at the top. We guarantee it is worth the effort.
A complimentary welcome pack is included containing wine, coffee, teas, bread, milk, sugar and eggs.
A deposit is required to confirm your reservation. In case of cancellation the deposit is non-refundable unless the property is re-rented for the same period of time to someone else. If re-rented we will be happy to reimburse you.
Full payment is due on arrival.
