Enjoy your stay on Kauai in a brand new custom built island luxury beach house surrounded by the natural beauty of Haena and steps to the ocean (30 seconds to the sand is our motto). Hale Haena is perfectly located to be close to world class beaches including 'Tunnels', a short drive to Hanalei and a two minute walk to one of the best restaurants in Kauai. Spend all day enjoying the activities of Kauai and come home to luxury and the relaxing sounds of the ocean. This beautifully designed three bedroom house with high ceilings blends quality craftsmanship with a tropical open feeling. The living room, kitchen and dining room all flow to ensure that no one is ever isolated from the heart of the home.

'Hale Haena' was designed with three master suites, one on each level and a fully enclosed private outdoor shower. All three rooms have full private baths. There are three deck lanai's built to evoke an indoor/outdoor feeling while you enjoy the ocean and mountains views.

Beautiful granite countertops in the kitchen and bathroom vanities, custom DeWils kitchen cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, Bosch dishwasher, flat panel TVs, exotic hardwood floors on the second level, and custom slate floors on the lower level and the entire house fully wired with broadband and cable. New furnishings throughout the home.

Other amenities include free domestic long distance, washer and dryer, beach towels, beach chairs, beach coolers, boogie boards, board games, DVD library. We think of everything, just bring yourself! Lots of books to plan your trip, board games when you are indoors.

When you read through books about Kauai, you will find that the majority will focus on the N. shore exactly where this house is located.

It has something for everyone!

Kauai Stories Life on the Garden Island told by Kauai’s people (Brown, 2012) describes Aloha is what your heart feels like when you share. Aloha is love, It’s the absence of fear. It’s a lifestyle, a way to live. Aloha is really two words: alo means to be in the presence of: ha is your breath. So aloha means taking the time to be present with someone, to take a deep breath, to play some music, to enjoy your life. What does this mean for you? We know you will enjoy your stay at Hale Haena and enjoy the breath of life, family, and the time you have with others!

Haena, Through the Eyes of the Ancestors book (Andrade, Carlos, 2009) tells the old ancient stories of Haena. Haena, defined as intense ha (breath), is the sun’s exhalation as it first appears in the morning on the eastern horizon and then again at the last expiration of light as it sets in the west. What does this mean for you staying at Hale Haena? The most fabulous sunrises and sunsets just steps out your door to the sand and ocean!

Kauai Island Heritage book (Krauss, 1978) describes the mountain near our home as “the Bali Hai picture postcard image of the South Seas. Kauai comes closest to being everyone’s dream of a tropical paradise, The Garden Island.” The love story The South Pacific was filmed with the back drop of Bali Hai (Makana meaning gift or reward above Limahuli Valley).

When you read through books about Kauai, you will find that the majority will focus on the N. shore exactly where this house is located.

It has something for everyone!

Haena Throught the Eyes of the Ancestors (Andrade, 2009) is a place well deserving of the title aina momona, a fertile fruitful, sweet land of abundant springs and waters flowing from the mountains nearby sea. Haena still feels like the old Hawaii with its lush verdant backdrop of mountains surrounding Haena and the blues ocean you have ever seen.

Schuchter (2006) “Perfect Days on Kauai” book gives you examples of the perfect day in paradise and the real feel of Hawaii. Can you imagine crossing over one lane bridges and having unspoiled coastal beaches with some of the best reefs which are actually footsteps from your doorstep at our home? You can have this at Hale Haena.

An Island in the Turquoise Sea (Heintze, 2008) by Robertson Publishing describes how the island, the oldest of the Hawaiian islands though seemingly eternal, brings change, thru its trade winds, showers, clouds and surf and will offer the visitor new vistas, new life, and new beginnings. What does this mean for you? Every day is different in Haena and on the island and beach!

The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook (Doughty, 2013), describes the North Shore is as lush as any place on the planet. We are right by the famous South Pacific Bali Hi Mountain, (Hawaiian name Makana Peak), where the view is majestic and historic.

We are one of only a few of licensed/permitted and established vacation rentals in Haena that pay taxes to the state of Hawaii. Our TVR permit is proudly displayed in our window as mandated. Others do not have the TVR permit but will tell you they do.

Many are renting w/o permits and “you” maybe at risk if they are discovered with extremely large fines, etc.

Hale Haena-

Our home is 100 paces from the back door to the sand. It is a privately deeded path, no crossing streets. You walk out the back door and go thru the open hedge and follow the zig-zag path down the hedge and 30 seconds you are on the beach. You don’t have to carry your beach chairs very far to see the ocean, feel the breezes and spray on your face, and the warmth of the sun!

You can hear the ocean waves, feel the sea breezes, and see the ocean from your lanais, too.

This is the high end district that is cottage homes on the beach. There are houses just a few doors down that rent for thousands a night.

The beach in front of Hale Haena is sandy but there is coral which is great for snorkeling (see the satellite picture). Remember the coral reef is alive, please do not walk on the reef.

If you go to the right about 30 yards there is a sandy part to walk out and swim, snorkel, or boogie board most times of the year. There is also a sandy area about 75 yards to the left which is also good for snorkeling most times of the year. If the waves are too high and the undertow too strong just walk down around the bend heading west on the beach and you can snorkel at the famous Tunnels or Ke’e beach.

Every day will be different on the beach according to the tide and time of the year. Pay attention to surf and tide details as the island of Kauai can have dangerous waters as well.

All the beaches on the north shore have their own personalities. Visit them all.

I love the beach outside our house because it is so private and also for the sunrises and sunsets and sitting on our provided lawn chairs drinking a glass of wine. You will see local youth riding their horse right by the house and up the road. Everyone shares the road here (chickens, horses, cars, bikes). You will see Hawaiian monk seals out your door and an abundance of wildlife.

Less than a mile from the house is the famous 1000 acre Limahuli Gardens, a wonderful garden to self-tour or take the guided tour. You will find over 250 taxa of native plants and birds in the valley and about 50 of them are on the verge of extinction. There are innumerable archaeological complexes and cultural sites which are remains of the footprint of the Hawaiian civilization that once thrived here on Kauai. You can learn about the origin of the canoe plants, the Taro, ancient house sites, etc.

In the house-

You have all the amenities you will need.

The kitchen is well stocked and open to the living area.

There is a charcoal and gas grill, a fabulous organic farmers market on Tuesdays (4 mile marker), another market on Saturday’s in Hanalei, a grocery store not far away (Hanalei, Princeville, & Wainiha), and beaches with all family activities you desire and the romantic activities you need at your doorstep. The house has numerous books for your use to plan your trip during your stay at Hale Haena (many referenced here in my descriptions). We have board games, I Pod player, DVD player.

We have wireless internet, Cable TV, and flat screen TVs in every room.

Three full bedrooms with private attached baths which are hard to find and an outside shower as well when you come off the beach. The two bedrooms down have beautiful slate floors and the master bedroom upstairs beautiful hardwood floors, no carpets, allergy free. This is a natural chemical free home and yard.

Do you like an open shower concept or large Jacuzzi tub for those romantic nights, or would you prefer dancing on the lanai during and after sunset? Our beds have high end mattresses. Each bedroom and full bath has its own character.

Outside-

The large grassy front yard and side yard is great to play ball with the kids. Enjoy the manicured landscaped yard with local Hawaiian flowers that are beautiful to see and very fragrant. The views are spectacular! From one lanai you can see the ocean on the east horizon and if you turn to the west you will see the beautiful mountain views. The hedges in the back give you privacy to enjoy dinner on the lanai. The lanai off the BR upstairs you can sip a glass of wine and watch the sunset. The lanai in the front there is always a steady breeze and you will enjoy your mornings and evenings there.

We highly recommend Travel insurance which is available and is optional (but life happens). The guest would pay a small premium up front and if you the guest(s) need to cancel your trip due to illness or death, the insurance company kicks in and pays the rental fees. Oceanfront Realty can assist you with this. VRBO also has insurance on their website. Read all conditions.

About On-Island Contact- management company will be provided when booked.

In all our vacations and gift trips, we fell in love with Kauai and Haena. I can see God’s beautiful handywork in this place.

It is home. Welcome to our home! Hale Haena (the house of Haena)!

We are similar to you and your family- throughout the years we stayed in many vacation homes like you are inquiring about.

I have made our home comfortable for your enjoyment as well. Please do not hesitate to let us know what we can do or add to make Hale Haena even more enjoyable now or hopefully for your next stay and for future guests.

Have fun, respect Kauai and her wonders, and may God touch you and bless you while you are here and may you feel a longing to spend time seeking God while you are surrounding by His beauty.

When you read through books about Kauai, you will find that the majority will focus on the N. shore exactly where this house is located.

It has something for everyone!

Kauai Ancient Names and Their Stories (Wichman,1998) describes Haena as dominated by cliffs broken with a deep valley, Limahuil, “turning hand” and a shallow valley Manoa, “thick”, in front of cliffs lies a flat sandy plain with dunes along the beach and the reef extends almost the entire length of the ahupua’a and at one place forms a large lagoon or bay, Makua, “ancestor.”

Enjoy!

Location, Location, Location-

Kauai, 23 Themed Itineraries Lonely Planet 2009 informs the reader that the best scenic drive is “to the end of the road.” That is where our home, Hale Haena is.

The ocean coral reef and water is steps from the house are the best on the island. Look at the satellite maps of this area to see the large coral reef.

We are beyond the last one lane bridge in the middle of paradise, the real feel of old Hawaii!

You can learn how to visit the whole island in three to nine days through books like “Kauai 23 Themed Itineraries”(Yamamoto & Gregg) Lonely Planet Publishing.

We recommend several ways to see the island:

On foot- there are endless trails to hike and endless beaches to walk

By boat- take a Napali coast tour to go into the caves and see the coast line

By Helicopter- tour of the Napali Coast and the volcanoes, they literally take you down into the volcanoes

By kayak- the Hanalei River and ocean kayak for the more adventurous

Look up sites like Queens Bath, Anini Beach, Tunnels Beach, Ke’e Beach, Hideaway Beach, Na Pali Coast Kayaking, Limahuli Tropical Gardens, Kilauea Lighthouse, Kalalua Trail, Okolehao Trail and others for endless hiking, Hanalei Wildlife Refuge, Maniniholo Dry Cave, Waikapale’e Wet Cave, Princeville Golf Course, a ocean view Restaurant next door, Princeville Ranch horseback, zip-line, and kayak tours and so much more on the North Shore.

Have you tried paddle surfing, Snuba, whale watching, the best helicopter tours, waterfall touring, sugar cane canal water tubing, deep sea fishing? Eaten the best shave ice?

For the avid hiker check out books like Morey (2009) “Kauai Trails Walks Strolls and Treks on the Garden Island”Stone (2001) “Day Hikes on Kauai” and Sprout (2009) “Kauai Trailblazers” gives you great detail of the area by our home and where you can paddle, hike, kayak, etc.

The north shore has the best snorkeling, hiking, most authentic Hawaiian gardens (Limahuli Gardens), the best feel of old Hawaii

What makes this house unique

The flora of the island is best here. The north shore has the best snorkeling, hiking, most authentic Hawaiian gardens (Limahuli Gardens), the best feel of old Hawaii, where the first settlers came. From our house you can drive 3.5 minutes or walk to the famous Tunnels beach or 8 minutes to hiking above Ke’e beach (Kalalau trail).

You will probably spot monk seals at Ke’e beach and the views of the Napali Coast are the best (remember the road ends here).

The home's southern exposure and generous array of large windows and sliding doors allow air and light to flow throughout. Great views of the mountains and ocean abound from the expansive Ipe lanais. From the property, there is deeded beach access to the sands of Ku'au Beach. You are also minutes from some of Kauai's legendary North Shore destinations including the Makua (Tunnels), Ke'e and Lumahai Beaches, the Na Pali Coast Trail and Hanalei Town. Hale Haena is a sensory delight where you are embraced by the gentle trade winds, enchanted by the fragrant flora, lulled to sleep by the waves running over the outer reefs and thrilled by the colors of the rising and setting sun.

Hale Haena is a private vacation residence and we purchased this property after falling in love with Haena.

Our home has been set up to provide us with the ultimate in luxury beach living - and we know that you will find it to be the perfect place for your vacation getaway.

Enjoy your stay on Kauai in a custom built island luxury beach house surrounded by the natural beauty of Haena and steps from Kanaha beach. Spend all day enjoying the activities of Kauai and come home to luxury and the relaxing sounds of the ocean.

3 BR 3.5 baths and outdoor shower too.

Kauai Island Heritage book (Krauss, 1978) describes the mountain near our home as “the Bali Hai picture postcard image of the South Seas. Kauai comes closest to being everyone’s dream of a tropical paradise, The Garden Island.” The love story The South Pacific was filmed here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family had wonderful time staying at Haena house. The house and location exceeded our expectations. The moment we arrived and walked in we felt like we were at home. The house is well equiped with everything you may need and is decorated beautifully. We enjoyed Bbqing, relaxing on the Lanai and our kids loved how close we were to the beach. You truly are 30 seconds from the waves and hanging out on what seems like your own private beach. This north shore location is great for just hanging out, snorkling at tunnels, horseback riding, visiting Hanalei, Princeville or hiking Na Pali coast. Everything is within a few miles of the house. We would highly recommend this vacation property for enjoying yourself in beautiful Kauai. We look forward to returning to Haena house in the future and creating more family memories.

Fabulous place! The house was clean, well kept and spacious! The grounds were beautiful! Provided all the extras needed for the perfect beach vacation!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your lovely review and comments. I am glad you loved the location, cleanliness, and the yard, and noticed the extras we try to provide for our guests to enjoy our home. I know you created many memories for years to come and felt the love and Aloha of the island. Our home is 100 paces from the back door to the sand and ocean. It is a privately deeded path, no crossing streets. You walk out the back door and go thru the open hedge and follow the zig-zag path down the hedge and then in 30 seconds you are on the beach. "30 seconds to the sand" is our moto. You don’t have to carry your beach chairs very far to see the ocean, feel the breezes and spray on your face, and the warmth of the sun! Every day will be different on the beach according to the tide and time of the year. All the beaches on the north shore have their own personalities. I love the beach outside our house because it is so private and also for the sunrises and sunsets and if you'd like you can sit on our provided lawn chairs drink a glass of wine, and watch the waves. You will see local youth riding their horse right by the house and up the road. Everyone shares the road here (chickens, horses, cars, bikes). You will see Hawaiian monk seals out your door and an abundance of wildlife. You will be awakened by the many roosters that roam free on the island. That’s the charm of the old Hawaii. That's what makes me love this place! thanks

Great house layout but attention to maintenance... photo showing beach view.. not on beach..!

  • 4 of 5

Well equipped kitchen but kettle, whisk, roasting dish would have helped...sliding mosquito doors broken and locks in sliding doors faulty or difficult to close. 2 broken chairs and noisy fan.., could not sleep if not on low speed...difficult to hang towels in ground floor bathroom... hooks needed in hall and shoe rack to put shoes in hall... recycling... where to go for non locals... e found it finally!

Otherwise nice experience but remember at that price all should be perfect.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We will provide the items you mentioned for the kitchen. Last time I checked all those items were there but we will provide extras for guests staying at our home. Wear and tear does occur on any home and we attempt to stay on top of items that are needing repair. The ocean mist and proximity to the ocean does take a toll on most homes on the Ocean side, the Makai side of the road. As our information states, your senses will be awakened by ocean views, smell of the ocean mist, and roar of the ocean from the lanai and our home. It is 30 seconds to the sand down our privately deeded path. Our guests do not have to cross any roads to get to the beach and sun and sand. God bless our Hale and Kauai and our beautiful land and sea!!

Heavenly spot

  • 5 of 5

Well-appointed, beautiful rental home, truly only steps from its own little ocean cove. Great scenery. The “little stuff” was terrific also- complete kitchen, comfortable space for 6 adults, good beds, a new grill, good water pressure and hot water. It’s a little bit of a drive (past Hanalei, not quite to Tunnels beach)- but that’s a plus- secluded, close to Hanalei town, good beaches, snorkeling, and hiking. Its own beach is gorgeous, but more for viewing- riptides and underwater lava rock make it a bit treacherous to enter the ocean safely.

We’ll be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you for calling Hale Haena a heavenly spot. We think so too! We appreciate you noticing the appointed "little stuff" as we listen to our guests and add those little things that make life easier and your vacation stay more enjoyable. I hope to see you soon again as we offer discounts to return guests! We want to welcome you- Aloha, Jack London said “In what other land save this one is the commonest form of greeting no ‘good day’ nor How ye do” but ‘Love’? That greeting Aloha- Love, I love you my love to you.” So again, Aloha from Hale Haena!

Awesome house! This house was perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent stay in the house! It was great having a bathroom with every bedroom, and the porches were especially nice as there are two of them. The location was super close to the beach and we were able to watch the sunrise every morning. The kitchen was stocked with everything you need too. We will definitely try to stay here again! Thank you!!

A great family home

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying in Hale Haena. Wonderful vibe, location and comfort. The kitchen is superbly outfitted. Beach is, in fact, 30 seconds away, and the Beach chairs, towels and coolers were all used. Barbeque is brand new (we broke it in with some amazing Opah from the Dolphin fish market and some prime steaks from Costco (always stop there on the way from the airport to stock up on cheaper stuff....pricing is identical to mainland).

Interior of the unit is as pictured. The only item we could not operate was the disc player, which is broken. The lanais are wonderful.

All in all, a wonderful stay. My only quibble is that the house is 50 feet from the road. And while (i) there is greenery making traffic invisible from the unit and (ii) it is sort of infrequently travelled (it's the only road in and out to get to Tunnels and Ke'e beaches), you definitely hear road noise. This is not a factor at night, however, since there's scarcely any traffic to the beaches, but it starts up at about 8a every am.

All that said, we are very road noise sensitive, and this is not meant to deter others from staying here. It's a terrific cozy and comfortable house, and we had a lovely stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your 5 star rating and for recognizing that we try very hard to make your stay enjoyable. I loved that you used the word "wonderful" four times when describing our home and your stay. I also like the other adjectives and descriptions- superb, terrific, cozy, comfortable! I hope you made memories to last a life time because that is what we want for all our guests. The North Shore is as lush as any place on the planet. We are right by the famous South Pacific Bali Hi Mountain, (Hawaiian name Makana Peak), where the view is majestic and historic. To get to Haena, you cross over seven one lane bridges to the unspoiled coastal beaches of Tunnels and Ke'e beaches and the trail head to Napali Coast hiking. Our home is located by the best reefs which are actually footsteps from your doorstep, as you said so well- "30 seconds to the sand." To get this location, you have to stay in Haena, the old Hawaiian area. Kauai Ancient Names and Their Stories (Wichman,1998) describes Haena as dominated by cliffs broken with a deep valley, Limahuil, “turning hand” and a shallow valley Manoa, “thick”, in front of cliffs lies a flat sandy plain with dunes along the beach and the reef extends almost the entire length of the ahupua’a and at one place forms a large lagoon or bay, Makua, “ancestor.” Haena Through the Eyes of the Ancestors (Andrade, 2009) is a place well deserving of the title aina momona, a fertile fruitful, sweet land of abundant springs and waters flowing from the mountains nearby sea. Haena still feels like the old Hawaii with its lush verdant backdrop of mountains surrounding Haena and the blues ocean you have ever seen. Enjoy! And come stay with us again!

Location Location Location and Amenities! All you need to do is bring your swimsuit. We provide towels, beach chairs. Our kitchen has all the appliances you will need. Our home has flat screen TVs, wireless internet, cable, open air concept. Ceiling fans in every room and wonderful trade winds. Beautifully appointed furnishings. Extremely clean and strategically located to the best of the N Shore. What are you waiting for? The best scenic drive is “to the end of the road.” That is where our home, Hale Haena is located, in the soul of Haena, and a cottage full of your future memories.

After 6 one lane bridges then you will find our home. You can explore wet caves or literally at the end of the road as far as you can go- Ke’e Beach (the ultimate sun perch) and snorkeling. Don’t forget to bring your hiking boots because just above Ke’e Beach is the start of a trail that will take you to the 100 foot Hanakapi’ai Falls (around 4 hours).

From our house you can drive 3.5 minutes or walk to the famous Tunnels beach or 8 minutes to hiking above Ke’e beach (Kalalau trail).

Rent bikes for the week and ride your bikes around our lazy Haena.

You will probably spot monk seals at Ke’e beach and the views of the Napali Coast are the best just around the bend from our home.

Want to eat out and feel pampered but don’t want to drive to get there?

How about a massage and spa treatment? Beach massages, hot stone, and private meditation and yoga sessions? You can walk 300 yards to find this as well. Hanalei Day Spa.

The north shore boasts fabulous restaurants, sightings of the rich and famous.

It is definitely paradise found!

Let me tell you about Hale Haena our home….

When you read through books about Kauai, you will find that the majority will focus on the N. shore exactly where this house is located.

It has something for everyone!

Surfing, Snorkeling, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, horse back riding, zip lining, etc. Concierge services as needed thru management company. We can book your excursions. We listen to our guests and add things to our house constantly that you will enjoy and need. We highly recommend Travel insurance which is available and is optional (but life happens).
