Spend all day enjoying the activities of Kauai and come home to luxury and the relaxing sounds of the ocean. This beautifully designed three bedroom house with high ceilings blends quality craftsmanship with a tropical open feeling. The living room, kitchen and dining room all flow to ensure that no one is ever isolated from the heart of the home.

'Hale Haena' was designed with three master suites, one on each level and a fully enclosed private outdoor shower. All three rooms have full private baths. There are three deck lanai's built to evoke an indoor/outdoor feeling while you enjoy the ocean and mountains views.

Beautiful granite countertops in the kitchen and bathroom vanities, custom DeWils kitchen cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, Bosch dishwasher, flat panel TVs, exotic hardwood floors on the second level, and custom slate floors on the lower level and the entire house fully wired with broadband and cable. New furnishings throughout the home.

Other amenities include free domestic long distance, washer and dryer, beach towels, beach chairs, beach coolers, boogie boards, board games, DVD library. We think of everything, just bring yourself! Lots of books to plan your trip, board games when you are indoors.

When you read through books about Kauai, you will find that the majority will focus on the N. shore exactly where this house is located.

It has something for everyone!

Kauai Stories Life on the Garden Island told by Kauai’s people (Brown, 2012) describes Aloha is what your heart feels like when you share. Aloha is love, It’s the absence of fear. It’s a lifestyle, a way to live. Aloha is really two words: alo means to be in the presence of: ha is your breath. So aloha means taking the time to be present with someone, to take a deep breath, to play some music, to enjoy your life. What does this mean for you? We know you will enjoy your stay at Hale Haena and enjoy the breath of life, family, and the time you have with others!

Haena, Through the Eyes of the Ancestors book (Andrade, Carlos, 2009) tells the old ancient stories of Haena. Haena, defined as intense ha (breath), is the sun’s exhalation as it first appears in the morning on the eastern horizon and then again at the last expiration of light as it sets in the west. What does this mean for you staying at Hale Haena? The most fabulous sunrises and sunsets just steps out your door to the sand and ocean!

Kauai Island Heritage book (Krauss, 1978) describes the mountain near our home as “the Bali Hai picture postcard image of the South Seas. Kauai comes closest to being everyone’s dream of a tropical paradise, The Garden Island.” The love story The South Pacific was filmed with the back drop of Bali Hai (Makana meaning gift or reward above Limahuli Valley).

When you read through books about Kauai, you will find that the majority will focus on the N. shore exactly where this house is located.

It has something for everyone!

Haena Throught the Eyes of the Ancestors (Andrade, 2009) is a place well deserving of the title aina momona, a fertile fruitful, sweet land of abundant springs and waters flowing from the mountains nearby sea. Haena still feels like the old Hawaii with its lush verdant backdrop of mountains surrounding Haena and the blues ocean you have ever seen.

Schuchter (2006) “Perfect Days on Kauai” book gives you examples of the perfect day in paradise and the real feel of Hawaii. Can you imagine crossing over one lane bridges and having unspoiled coastal beaches with some of the best reefs which are actually footsteps from your doorstep at our home? You can have this at Hale Haena.

An Island in the Turquoise Sea (Heintze, 2008) by Robertson Publishing describes how the island, the oldest of the Hawaiian islands though seemingly eternal, brings change, thru its trade winds, showers, clouds and surf and will offer the visitor new vistas, new life, and new beginnings. What does this mean for you? Every day is different in Haena and on the island and beach!

The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook (Doughty, 2013), describes the North Shore is as lush as any place on the planet. We are right by the famous South Pacific Bali Hi Mountain, (Hawaiian name Makana Peak), where the view is majestic and historic.

We are one of only a few of licensed/permitted and established vacation rentals in Haena that pay taxes to the state of Hawaii. Our TVR permit is proudly displayed in our window as mandated. Others do not have the TVR permit but will tell you they do.

Many are renting w/o permits and “you” maybe at risk if they are discovered with extremely large fines, etc.

Hale Haena-

Our home is 100 paces from the back door to the sand. It is a privately deeded path, no crossing streets. You walk out the back door and go thru the open hedge and follow the zig-zag path down the hedge and 30 seconds you are on the beach. You don’t have to carry your beach chairs very far to see the ocean, feel the breezes and spray on your face, and the warmth of the sun!

You can hear the ocean waves, feel the sea breezes, and see the ocean from your lanais, too.

This is the high end district that is cottage homes on the beach. There are houses just a few doors down that rent for thousands a night.

The beach in front of Hale Haena is sandy but there is coral which is great for snorkeling (see the satellite picture). Remember the coral reef is alive, please do not walk on the reef.

If you go to the right about 30 yards there is a sandy part to walk out and swim, snorkel, or boogie board most times of the year. There is also a sandy area about 75 yards to the left which is also good for snorkeling most times of the year. If the waves are too high and the undertow too strong just walk down around the bend heading west on the beach and you can snorkel at the famous Tunnels or Ke’e beach.

Every day will be different on the beach according to the tide and time of the year. Pay attention to surf and tide details as the island of Kauai can have dangerous waters as well.

All the beaches on the north shore have their own personalities. Visit them all.

I love the beach outside our house because it is so private and also for the sunrises and sunsets and sitting on our provided lawn chairs drinking a glass of wine. You will see local youth riding their horse right by the house and up the road. Everyone shares the road here (chickens, horses, cars, bikes). You will see Hawaiian monk seals out your door and an abundance of wildlife.

Less than a mile from the house is the famous 1000 acre Limahuli Gardens, a wonderful garden to self-tour or take the guided tour. You will find over 250 taxa of native plants and birds in the valley and about 50 of them are on the verge of extinction. There are innumerable archaeological complexes and cultural sites which are remains of the footprint of the Hawaiian civilization that once thrived here on Kauai. You can learn about the origin of the canoe plants, the Taro, ancient house sites, etc.

In the house-

You have all the amenities you will need. Our home is like an HGTV dream home.

The kitchen is well stocked and open to the living area with Top Chef amenities.

There is a charcoal and gas grill, a fabulous organic farmers market on Tuesdays (4 mile marker), another market on Saturday’s in Hanalei, a grocery store not far away (Hanalei, Princeville, & Wainiha), and beaches with all family activities you desire and the romantic activities you need at your doorstep. The house has numerous books for your use to plan your trip during your stay at Hale Haena (many referenced here in my descriptions). We have board games, I Pod player, DVD player.

We have wireless internet, Cable TV, and flat screen TVs in every room.

Three full bedrooms with private attached baths which are hard to find and an outside shower as well when you come off the beach. The two bedrooms down have beautiful slate floors and the master bedroom upstairs beautiful hardwood floors, no carpets, allergy free. This is a natural chemical free home and yard.

Do you like an open shower concept or large Jacuzzi tub for those romantic nights, or would you prefer dancing on the lanai during and after sunset? Our beds have high end mattresses. Each bedroom and full bath has its own character.

Outside-

The large grassy front yard and side yard is great to play ball with the kids. Enjoy the manicured landscaped yard with local Hawaiian flowers that are beautiful to see and very fragrant. The views are spectacular! From one lanai you can see the ocean on the east horizon and if you turn to the west you will see the beautiful mountain views. The hedges in the back give you privacy to enjoy dinner on the lanai. The lanai off the BR upstairs you can sip a glass of wine and watch the sunset. The lanai in the front there is always a steady breeze and you will enjoy your mornings and evenings there.

For the beach-

We stock the small storage compartment on the outside of the house to the left of the front door “Guest beach supplies” with beach chairs, beach toys, boogie boards, and coolers for your use, many guests have also left their snorkeling gear, reef shoes, etc. behind for other guests as well. You have ample beach towels to use and an outdoor shower when you come off the beach. If you forgot sun tan lotion, don’t worry, it is just 30 seconds back to the house.

What more could you ask for? Location?

We have location, location, location

After 6 one lane bridges then you will find our home.

About The Owner

In all our vacations and gift trips, we fell in love with Kauai and Haena. I can see God’s beautiful handywork in this place.

It is home. Welcome to our home! Hale Haena (the house of Haena)!

We are similar to you and your family- throughout the years we stayed in many vacation homes like you are inquiring about.

I have made our home comfortable for your enjoyment as well. Please do not hesitate to let us know what we can do or add to make Hale Haena even more enjoyable now or hopefully for your next stay and for future guests.

Have fun, respect Kauai and her wonders, and may God touch you and bless you while you are here and may you feel a longing to spend time seeking God while you are surrounding by His beauty.

When you read through books about Kauai, you will find that the majority will focus on the N. shore exactly where this house is located.

It has something for everyone!

Kauai Ancient Names and Their Stories (Wichman,1998) describes Haena as dominated by cliffs broken with a deep valley, Limahuil, “turning hand” and a shallow valley Manoa, “thick”, in front of cliffs lies a flat sandy plain with dunes along the beach and the reef extends almost the entire length of the ahupua’a and at one place forms a large lagoon or bay, Makua, “ancestor.”

Enjoy!

The Owner purchased this house in 2009

Why The Owner chose Kauai

Location, Location, Location-

Kauai, 23 Themed Itineraries Lonely Planet 2009 informs the reader that the best scenic drive is “to the end of the road.” That is where our home, Hale Haena is.

The ocean coral reef and water is steps from the house are the best on the island. Look at the satellite maps of this area to see the large coral reef.

We are beyond the last one lane bridge in the middle of paradise, the real feel of old Hawaii!

You can learn how to visit the whole island in three to nine days through books like “Kauai 23 Themed Itineraries”(Yamamoto & Gregg) Lonely Planet Publishing.

We recommend several ways to see the island:

On foot- there are endless trails to hike and endless beaches to walk

By boat- take a Napali coast tour to go into the caves and see the coast line

By Helicopter- tour of the Napali Coast and the volcanoes, they literally take you down into the volcanoes

By kayak- the Hanalei River and ocean kayak for the more adventurous

Look up sites like Queens Bath, Anini Beach, Tunnels Beach, Ke’e Beach, Hideaway Beach, Na Pali Coast Kayaking, Limahuli Tropical Gardens, Kilauea Lighthouse, Kalalua Trail, Okolehao Trail and others for endless hiking, Hanalei Wildlife Refuge, Maniniholo Dry Cave, Waikapale’e Wet Cave, Princeville Golf Course, Mediterranean Gourmet Restaurant next door, Princeville Ranch horseback, zip-line, and kayak tours and so much more on the North Shore.

Have you tried paddle surfing, Snuba, whale watching, the best helicopter tours, waterfall touring, sugar cane canal water tubing, deep sea fishing? Eaten the best shave ice?

For the avid hiker check out books like Morey (2009) “Kauai Trails Walks Strolls and Treks on the Garden Island”Stone (2001) “Day Hikes on Kauai” and Sprout (2009) “Kauai Trailblazers” gives you great detail of the area by our home and where you can paddle, hike, kayak, etc.

The north shore has the best snorkeling, hiking, most authentic Hawaiian gardens (Limahuli Gardens), the best feel of old Hawaii

What makes this house unique

The flora of the island is best here. The north shore has the best snorkeling, hiking, most authentic Hawaiian gardens (Limahuli Gardens), the best feel of old Hawaii, where the first settlers came. From our house you can drive 3.5 minutes or walk to the famous Tunnels beach or 8 minutes to hiking above Ke’e beach (Kalalau trail).

You will probably spot monk seals at Ke’e beach and the views of the Napali Coast are the best (remember the road ends here).

The home's southern exposure and generous array of large windows and sliding doors allow air and light to flow throughout. Great views of the mountains and ocean abound from the expansive Ipe lanais. From the property, there is deeded beach access to the sands of Ku'au Beach. You are also minutes from some of Kauai's legendary North Shore destinations including the Makua (Tunnels), Ke'e and Lumahai Beaches, the Na Pali Coast Trail and Hanalei Town. Hale Haena is a sensory delight where you are embraced by the gentle trade winds, enchanted by the fragrant flora, lulled to sleep by the waves running over the outer reefs and thrilled by the colors of the rising and setting sun.

Hale Haena is a private vacation residence and we purchased this property after falling in love with Haena.

Our home has been set up to provide us with the ultimate in luxury beach living - and we know that you will find it to be the perfect place for your vacation getaway.

Enjoy your stay on Kauai in a custom built island luxury beach house surrounded by the natural beauty of Haena and steps from Kanaha beach. Spend all day enjoying the activities of Kauai and come home to luxury and the relaxing sounds of the ocean.

3 BR 3.5 baths and outdoor shower too.

Kauai Island Heritage book (Krauss, 1978) describes the mountain near our home as “the Bali Hai picture postcard image of the South Seas. Kauai comes closest to being everyone’s dream of a tropical paradise, The Garden Island.” The love story The South Pacific was filmed here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family had wonderful time staying at Haena house. The house and location exceeded our expectations. The moment we arrived and walked in we felt like we were at home. The house is well equiped with everything you may need and is decorated beautifully. We enjoyed Bbqing, relaxing on the Lanai and our kids loved how close we were to the beach. You truly are 30 seconds from the waves and hanging out on what seems like your own private beach. This north shore location is great for just hanging out, snorkling at tunnels, horseback riding, visiting Hanalei, Princeville or hiking Na Pali coast. Everything is within a few miles of the house. We would highly recommend this vacation property for enjoying yourself in beautiful Kauai. We look forward to returning to Haena house in the future and creating more family memories.

Beautiful house filled with Aloha

  • 5 of 5

This has by far been my favorite rental. Hale Haena sits on my favorite part of the island, the north shore. It's views of the ocean and mountains are majestic and breath taking. Just a short bike ride away is tunnels beach and haena state park, by far the most beautiful and perfect beaches on kauai. The house is welcoming and pristine. You can tell the owner takes great pride in this house as anyone should who steps foot in the door. Other reviewers stated signs were rude and too much, but I found them a great reminder to treat your house the way you would treat your own. If this house is an investment or retirement home for the owners, I would want it maintained and respected by guests. Many renters tend to forget this. Mahalo for the great memories. I would 100% recommend this house and I look forward to staying here in the future.

Owner's Response: I want to thank this guest for their kind comments and feedback. We take great pride to create the best experience for our guests! I work very hard to maintain high standards at our home. Also thanks to my housekeeper Christian and my gardener Ray, tell them hi for me, my home always represents "5 stars" and the pride of service to our guests!! Thank you also to my wonderful management company on island, they are the best at taking care of our guests while on island. Thanks Donna and everyone at Oceanfront! I know of few homes on island who go the extra mile and want their home to be your home away and your best vacation memory that will last you a life time. That is what we are all about- making memories for you and your family for years to come.

Beautiful but...

  • 3 of 5

This is a beautiful house in an excellent location but I cannot recommend it. We felt very uncomfortable with the signs posted around the house. We have rented vacation homes annually for several years and I have never encountered an owner like this. While we would never complain about removing shoes or conserving water we were very surprised with the angry and hostile nature of the signage. Things like "water & electricty are very expensive here...would you like people coming to your house and running up your bills?" They were signed "mahalo" as if this would soften the demeaning implication. I was also not impressed with the letter left in the property explaining how the owners were only able to purchase the home by generating enough rental income to cover the cost. This letter just adds to the unwelcome feeling of the home. We felt the owners are only begrudgingly renting the property out and would greatly prefer not to. To put it in island terms...there is really no aloha spirit here.

Finally, we were surprised to find no key to the outbuilding containing the boogie boards & beach toys and disappointed to find the bbq out of propane. Typically vacation rentals offer a very basic supply of pantry type items such as salt/pepper, etc. but this kitchen had been stripped completely bare. This isn't really a big deal & normally too small to mention but combined with everything else it just added to the feeling we were intruding in someone's home.

Owner's Response: Please note the reviewer indicated beautiful home in a great location, thank you for that comment. Aloha is love, It’s the absence of fear. It’s a lifestyle, a way to live. Aloha is really two words: alo means to be in the presence of: ha is your breath. So aloha means taking the time to be present with someone, to take a deep breath, to play some music, to enjoy your life. We take suggestions to heart and have added items in the house that guests have requested and have taken this guests suggestions to heart as well. With warm Aloha we have removed the signs the guest indicated was upsetting to them. We know you will enjoy your stay at Hale Haena and enjoy the breath of life, family, and the time you have with others. We have opened our home for others to enjoy and we hope our guests feel God's presence on this beautiful island. We know you will be respectful and cognizant that utilities are expensive on island and we know you will be respecful of our lovely home and we thank you in advance for taking good care of Hale Haena for us. To clarify we provide beach amenities in a closet for our guests who have access to this area at all times. It is clearly marked "guest" beach supplies. Thank you for your suggestion for condiments in the kitchen however most homes on island have to keep a minimal supply of these items for guest use due to the risk of luring pests and bugs into the home. I hope this helps with the clarifications for this guest's concerns as we always wanted to create warm aloha for everyone who stays on Kauai, at Hale Haena. thanks

Close to Ke'e Beach

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I and our spouses stayed in this house for a week. We are senior citizens so I can attest to the comfort of this house. You will have to carry your suitcases to the 2nd floor if you are staying up there, but there are 2 BRs on the bottom floor as well. Being from Mississippi, we were worried about no A/C, but we opened the windows and turned on the fans and we were fine. We liked having our own bathroom and I must say that all of the bathrooms were really first class. Kitchen was top notch. Only thing missing was an electric hand mixer but we made do with what they had. This house is close to Ke'e beach -- 2 miles down the road. It is the best beach for snorkeling -- but get there early. We left the house at 8:15 and were there just in the nick of time to get a parking place in the lot, but still a walk to the beach. The house is a 30 second walk to the Kapuhi beach. We would set out our chairs at night on the sand and watch the sunsets. It was beautiful.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review! Our home is great for seniors, families, and couples. We have three bedroms with full private baths which is unique at our price point. We will add your kitchen appliance suggestion. We always add items that people recommend. I am glad you enjoyed watching the sunsets on our private beach 30 seconds to the sand, no crossing streets. And yes our house is very close to Ke'e beach and I am glad you enjoyed your stay!!

Love Kauai

  • 3 of 5

This house was beautiful and very nicely appointed. It worked beautifully for the three couples that rented it. The one true negative was the insulting signage everywhere in the house. I would like to think that most people are likely to care for the home properly. On every sign (which there were many) there are threats of monetary punishment and insults relating to garbage removal and taking shoes off. My husband and I traveled with our very good friends. All of us are professionals and planned to care for their home as we would our own. It actually became the running joke of the week, that we would fine one another for everything. I wouldn't recommend this home simply because I don't think that these people should not have rental property. You take risks when you rent your home but insulting your tenants with fines and nasty signage isn't the way to go.

Owner's Response: Please note the individuals who rented our home stated….”This house was beautiful and very nicely appointed. It worked beautifully for the three couples that rented it”. The other comments are not factual. There are no threats in our home of punishment. Taking shoes off is the Aloha way and standard on Hawaii. This is the only negative comment we have gotten ever. If a guest makes a suggestion we actually incorporate it into our home (solar vent fans, kitchen amenities, etc.). Our hospitality shows in many ways by sending you a book ahead of time to help you plan your time on island and get excited about your trip. We also have numerous books in the house I reference in the website about hiking, island history, native plants, birds, etc. We provide all you need while you are there the comforts of home as described on the website. We appreciate our guests and are happy to make you feel at home on the island and in our home. Mahalo!

Best Vacation Yet!

  • 5 of 5

We were blessed with the opportunity to rent this home. We loved our privacy and the location to the beach. It would have been nice to be right on the beach, but then it wouldn't have been as private. Our family spent many mornings sitting on the lanai and watching the ocean from there while eating our breakfast and reading. It felt like home away from home! Waves were very strong while we were there, but we discovered other beaches for snorkeling. We would rent this house again! Beds were comfortable and it was nice to have a bathroom per bedroom. We were told while staying there that the North Shore is calmer in the summer. Being our first time to Kauai we wanted to explore the island. I would say we were always going somewhere every day because Kauai is a beautiful place and so much we wanted to do and see. I now see how the Steele family fell in love with this place. We highly recommend it!!

Everything as advertised

  • 5 of 5

Hale Haena is everything that is advertised and more. It is truly 30 seconds to the sand and I loved the ocean and mountain views. The sunrises and sunsets were amazing. The house is beautiful and very clean. The grounds are lovely with many Hawaiian flowers and trees. Everything was close on the N. Shore. We felt so good about our decision to rent from an ethical owner who is licensed and permitted for vacation rentals. I will tell all my friends and family about Hale Haena and what a wonderful place to stay!

The Smiths from Chicago.

Let me tell you about Hale Haena our home….

When you read through books about Kauai, you will find that the majority will focus on the N. shore exactly where this house is located.

It has something for everyone!

Surfing, Snorkeling, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, horse back riding, zip lining, etc. Concierge services as needed thru management company. We can book your excursions. We listen to our guests and add things to our house constantly that you will enjoy and need.
