Casa Cantillon is an authentic Portuguese house with two bedrooms, located in the old town of Tavira. The house is adjacent to the archaeological sites in Tavira. Perfectly located for a family vacation or among friends.

There is a very peaceful atmosphere at Casa Cantillon and yet you are right in the heart of the beautiful town of Tavira. You can reach everything on foot from the house, such as shops, bars, supermarkets and restaurants.

The house is situated in the historic old town of Tavira. Typical for this part of town are the small, narrow streets and an amazing array of churches.

Casa Cantillon is a stylish and typical, recently renovated town house. Upon entering the house, there is a large living room with a sitting and dining area. There are two sofas with a flat screen TV showing Astra 19 Satellite.

On the first floor, there is the kitchen and bathroom with the original azulejos (tiles) on the walls. A few steps up is the first bedroom with a double bed and a large window with a balcony, this bedroom has air conditioning. On the third floor, is the second bedroom with two single beds. From this floor you will come to a terrace with a table and four chairs, a barbecue and a traditional pizza oven at your disposal.

Casa Cantillon provides a wireless internet connection.

On the terrace there is a parasol, also a table and four chairs and one sunbed.

Within walking distance of the house there is a wide range of shops and restaurants.

Tavira Island is the closest beach located to the house. A 5 minutes stroll will bring you to the ferry going from Tavira harbour to the island. Tavira island is a 10 kilometer long white sand beach with several beach restaurants and beach bars.

There are excellent golf courses within 5 to 10 minutes drive from the house. The nearest are Benamor , Quinta da Ria , Quinta da Cima and Monte Rei.

A car is not necessary for this property. If you do want to explore the beautiful towns in the Algarve, it is advisable to rent a car. You can rent cars and / or bicycles with us. Please specify when making your booking.

The accommodation is child friendly, there are stairs in the house going to the first and second floors. Casa Cantillon is recommended for ages from 7 years and older.

There is a cot and high chair provided. There is a charge of 20 euro per week for a cot and high chair.

The property is recommended for the elderly, but there are stairs that go to the first and second floors.

This is a centrally located town house, there are neighbours on one side of the house and on the other side archaeological ruins of Tavira.

You can easily get around by foot to and from the house. Tavira is easy to reach by bus, train or car from the airport in Faro.

A 5 minutes stroll will bring you to the ferry going from Tavira harbor to the island. Toilet paper and soap are provided, also water and beverages. For late arrivals, there is a breakfast pack provided. Guests will be met at the villa, or otherwise informed where to locate the key and visited soon after arrival. Everything was just as promised!

This is a cute true Portuguese townhouse! It made us feel like we lived there. You can tell the owner, Anne, has put a lot of home touches in it. There were DVDs (in English too) for the family. All the little things like trash bags, hand soap in the bathroom and dish soap in the kitchen as well as laundry soap etc. was provided. Rita, who met us, and showed us the apartment, was great and answered all of our questions. The location was perfect! It was great to be able to walk just a block or two to the local stores and cafes. It was right around the block from the Portugal soccer shop, and if you went up the hill there was a wonderful restaurant, Ave de Tavira (pricey, but great, reservation recommended), on the way to the Camera Obscura (a must see!). We also had a tremendous meal at Aquasol across the river (excellent, best Italian, need reservation). This place is perfect for a family with two kids. My daughter and I took a yellow Tuk for a quick city tour for about 12 euro pp. My husband, daughter and I walked to the ferry that took us to the island (several times) for the best beach! Only 2 euros pp round trip. There is plenty of good restaurants there too. The food was fabulous at most places. Good wine can be bought at a mini store for less than 5 euros! We did go to the local train station and take a day trip to Vila Real de Santo António, which is a cute town just west of Spain. We didn't take the ferry to Spain as Rita told us they have siesta at the time we would be there. I think it would be great to have a guided tour to see some villages, including burros, and other local sights, maybe Rita's husband could arrange. All-in-all a great experience!

The only recommendations I would suggest to the owner, Anne, is to put an air conditioner in the Master bedroom (sometimes a bit too warm and to help reduce noise) as well as updating the bathroom plumbing. My husband would add a Keurig type of coffee machine (we still don't get the European types). With those upgrades I would give it 5 stars.

Tavira, referred to in guide books as the ‘Venice of the Algarve’ is one of the most authentic towns in the Algarve and definitely worth visiting.

Historically, Tavira was an important harbour town and there are still remnants from Moorish, Phoenician and Roman occupations. There is a lively fishing trade along the river front, though far less than when Tavira was known for its huge tuna fishing fleets, the anchors of which can all be seen lodged in the sand at Barril beach.

The beautiful centre of Tavira is situated on the banks of the river Gilão. The town has a seven arched Roman bridge that spans the river and is the focal point of the town. Tavira was virtually rebuilt in the eighteenth century after the famous earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the buildings. The impressive church of Sta. Maria do Castelo has a gothic portal and stands on the site of the former 13th century mosque and most of the 37 churches have beautiful tile work within. There are many examples of Renaissance and Manueline architecture including the arched doorway of the Misericordia church. The 13th century castle walls border the medieval centre of town, encompassing tranquil gardens and a Camera Obscura. From there your eyes can scan over the rich tapestry of peaked rooftops to the estuary leading through the mosaic of salt pans and far out into the Atlantic.

There are many highly recommended fish restaurants, which serve locally caught shellfish and fresh fish dishes, enjoyed with a glass of ‘vinho verde’, the ´green` sparkling wine which is typically Portuguese. Numerous cafes and restaurants line the river, public gardens and quiet squares, offering an array of traditional patisseries and fresh fish dishes.

Tavira beaches make up part of the Nature Reserve of the Ria Formosa, which comprise six unique barrier islands protecting a system of salt marshes and tidal mudflats, each fronted by white sand beaches that spread as far as the eye can see. An unspoilt haven for nature lovers, walkers and bird watchers.

Few places in Europe have so many Blue Flag beaches in such a concentrated area, you can enjoy the boat and miniature train river crossings, many of which are operational throughout the year.

Inland and set in rural countryside 7 km north of Tavira is the waterfall of ‘Moinhos da Rocha’. A series of wooden decks and bridges skirt a leafy ravine sheltering the crystal clear waters of a small stream. This culminates in a low but impressive waterfall that empties into a small lake. Further up stream are the other beautiful cascading waterfalls of ‘Pego do Inferno’, both pretty places for picnics and having a dip!

There are seasonal festivals of live music, street theatre and open air cinema interspersed with various fairs. One of the main festivals is Sâo Joâo on the 24th of June, when Tavira is decorated in paper flowers, host carnivals and processions with late night sardine- eating and street dancing!
