My name is Cristina, I'm a journalist and copywriter. Graduated in Letters at the University of Bologna, I adore this city and meet new people. My hospitality will be kind and generous, like the person I try to be every day. Cristina
Why Cristina chose Santo Stefano
"This house is not a hotel" is my motto. To make feel my guests at home is my goal. I tried to treasure all those little or big things that made my travels or my holidays less pleasant than it could have been: a poor breakfast, a bed too small or too hard, a noisy room or in which radiated the morning light, a tiny shower stall, hair dryer suitable for a child, certainly not to the hair of a woman, and I could go on ... and on the basis of my experiences have prepared a bespoke apartment for exigent travelers. Each guest has a personalized welcome, based on his/her tastes, preferences and the characteristics of the trip. Bologna is a wonderful city, undeservedly less known than other Italian cities. It is'vibrant, welcoming, full of flavors, smells and colors. My apartment is located in an area of the old town, perfect to discover the city in all its aspects: from arts, to the culinary experiences, from the music to that of the liveliness of the students life of the Alma Mater, the oldest universities in the world, dated 1088.
What makes this Apartment unique
Breakfast for the first morning is offered with pleasure by Bijou House! The apartment is the result of travels and experiences: designer furniture alternate with ethnic pieces from India, Africa, Indonesia, Andalusia and combined with a touch of Italian regionalism. The atmosphere is distinguished from the large volume of the vaulted ceiling and the warmth of wood. The trophies As evidenced by the pictures, in the living room there are hunting trophies. They are hunted in Africa almost thirty years ago, by a person very dear to me, a friend of the great Hemingway, too, who lives no more. The trophies, hunted in compliance with the rules of the place, represent for me a very strong emotional bond, though I am against hunting. I know that remove them will offer me more opportunities to rent the flat, but I find that it would be a hypocrisy and a lack of respect for a person for whom I felt deep affection. I hope that people can try to understand that my point of view. I believe that hosting is an art that requires taste and empathy. I love to personalize the welcome depending on the guest that will arrive. I'm glad to know in advance your tastes in food and drink, and if you have allergies, or following specific diets. Between a host and the other house it is completely sanitized. However, after the sanitizing, each surface is further cleaned with the precious BLUARIA detergents, of exclusively vegetable origin and free of phosphates, formaldehyde, parabens, EDTA, PEG, triclosan, chemical bleaches and bleach, phenoxyethanol, isothiazolinone chloride, to protect the health , the environment and reduce the risk of allergies.

Bijou House for the SECOND TIME
I told the VRBO world back in November 2016 that I really wanted to come back to Bologna, to stay Cristina’s apartment again, and to bring my husband this time. We just did it, and to make it even better, we brought my brother along as well.
After the crowded, narrow, irregular sidewalks with motorized traffic zipping by at one’s elbow, in what must be Italy’s tourist capitol, Bologna just up the road, seemed as refreshing as that longed for “breath of fresh air”. Whether they are called arcades, colonnades, or porticoes, Bologna has an architectural signature all its own; one which radiates calm, dignity, sophistication, and civilization. What’s more, all those porticoes mean the sidewalks are wide, smooth and protected. I ditched the cane I’d been using as a third foot. (Use Google Images to see the serenity Bologna projects.) We walked miles and miles each day as the beauty of the city is my primary attraction to Bologna. What better way to see it than on one’s own feet at one’s own pace.
Now there are plenty of galleries, museums, and churches to keep one busy from morning to night. Those connected to the University of Bologna were especially delightful.
So, as I recommend the city as justifying of a full fledged stop, you can be as busy or as lazy as you want in Bologna and still have a terrific time. For instance, the Opera House is only steps from Cristina’s apartment. We stopped in hoping to get tickets for the April production, but the opera didn’t start until after our stay would be over. However, as we would return after a day’s exploring, we could hear the rehearsals taking place inside.
Surely you will never see on VRBO as unique an apartment as Cristina’s is....or as immaculate, or beautifully outfitted. In addition to all she has done to welcome her guests in general, she goes an extra 10 miles to personalize her welcome to you. “Pampered” would be a good word to describe the way you will feel.
I recommend Bijou House 100%.
I think I found in Nancy a person who loves Bologna almost like me (or really like me), and hosting her and her relatives for the second time was a real honor: they appreciate the unique atmosphere, the architecture, the delicious food. In bologna everything is unique in the world and Nancy has managed to seize and enjoy this rarity, so much so that she returns to visit it twice.
And it will be a great pleasure to host them again in the future because she and her family are lovely and kind, polite and friendly people, that I would like” to pamper” once again and every time more.
Cristina, Bijou House
We’ve used HomeAway properties many times and they have all been excellent. Bijou House is all this and much more. For Cristina, the owner, it is clearly a labour of love to look after her guests. She was the most welcoming of hosts and the great provider of just about everything the traveller usually has to bring or buy for a city break.
The apartment is beautifully furnished with an exquisite wooden staircase going down to the bedroom. It has a very homely feel and both upstairs and down has a home theatre set up with tv, dvd library and music system.
The bathrooms were adorned with baskets of toiletries and the compact but well equipped kitchen had all the store cupboard essentials provided.
Christina had asked us in advance what type of breakfast food we liked as she likes to have this in place for the first morning. The fridge was stocked with cold drinks, a large bottle of beer (to my husband’s delight) , Prosecco, fresh mortadella, bread rolls , cheese, milk and breakfast cereals. There were also little baskets of sweet treats dotted around the place.
When we arrived we were exhausted from travelling and were extremely grateful and delighted to flop down and enjoy Christina’s little feast.
In addition to all this, Cristina had put together a little personalised information booklet with everything we needed to know about the apartment and the local facilities. Among the many restaurants listed was the Trattoria Annamaria, just a short distance from the apartment. This was a real bonus. We loved it. It had a great vibe and superb food.
The apartment is centrally located and at the back of the building so it is very peaceful given the amount of activity on the street. We were able to walk to the Two Towers and the Piazza Maggiore. The Christmas lights were switched on during our stay and there was such a buzz about the city - I wish we could have bottled it!
Bologna is a wonderful city to visit and for us Bijou House was the icing on the cake - a cosy nook in a great location. Perfetto!
Dear Catherine, many thanks for your meticulous review and for your sensibility that has managed to notice every detail and also the great work behind it. I loved your communication, your curiosity and desire to know. I appreciated you and your husband, at least as much as you have loved Bijou House. It was a real honor that you chose Bologna and in particular my apartment to celebrate a very important anniversary. Thank you for your warmth, for how you treated the apartment and also for the beautiful words written on the guests' book. Please come back soon!!!
Well located. Clean. Comfortable
The apartment has a great location and was very clean. While the owner is lovely and well meaning, she doesn't have a solid understanding of vrbo/Homeaway policies. Therefore, if you have to modify your dates before the free cancellation date, do not rely on the owner to help you with that change. You should cancel with Homeaway/vrbo and then rebook the apartment.
Money is the matter. Kay had ambiguous behaviour from the very start so, before she booked, I asked her if she was really sure of her choice and I beg her to be honest, 'cause I have only this property to rent. My target is people from very far countries, that usually plan their vacation well in advance. So, very often, a cancellation means for me no other rent. She wrote she was absolutely sure. Weeks after booking, Kay decided to shorten her stay. The owners policy of HomeAway leaves the owners free to behave as they prefer: most of the owners accept to shorten the stay but without giving a cent back. And it's in their full right. I decided differently, and I returned the money for the three days less but the commission for HomeAway that I had already paid, as every owner knows. I even paid the commission on the rebate! And received any "thanks" for that. SHE expected to decide the amount of rebate, completely ignoring that I had already return money back, and I would not bound to do so. From the moment of her arrival, despite the welcome with flowers, red wine, parmesan, fresh bakery pastry, fresh fruits, her no-fat milk, icecream, fridge full of different drinks and foods, and so many other things that is impossible to describe in full, she wrote me almost every day, sometimes to ask for more info, that is a absolutely ok, but more often to complain of this or that (also of the food she and her husband eat in a little and cheap restaurant around the corner!), to reach the final goal: remind me, in her last email, I didn't return the exact amount she demanded. She already decided to leave not a very good review on July, months before her arrival, as she threaten her intention in a letter from her personaI email account, thinking to have me in her hands by threatening negative feedback. I sent immediately her letter to the Costumer Service, 'cause she stopped using HA inbox. Despite I asked her to use only HA inbox to communicate, she never used it anymore. Why?? Thanks to Kay, after almost 5 years of really happy and satisfying hosting, I introduce now the security deposit. About the apartment: she left sticky spots everywhere on the parquet, has moved teas into shoes rack and breaakfast into cabinet. Obviously I had to throw everything away. She broke one hairdryer and pulled a closet door from the tracks; she did not throw garbage (all the garbage, also food), leaving the apartment with a terrible smell. Definitely an experience to forget.
Secure, central location, quiet and well stocked, fantastic host
Cristina was the consummate host as many other reviewer’s have noted. We did not have a single complaint our entire five day stay. The apartment was perfect — great layout, well stocked, and close to everything. Thank you to Cristina for being one of those rare and amazing hosts.
Thanks so much for your generous review, Heather! Words like yours are an important incentive for me to improve amenities and do always my best. As I already said, thanks also for treating the apartment so well. Always count on me for your further trips to Italy or also for info about them! Ccing 😉
This is a very well equipped apartment which is well situated in Bologna. The best thing about it is Cristina, the owner. She has gone out of her way to ensure that our stay was comfortable and enjoyable. She provides the small comforts that make you feel special. It is obviously a labour of love for her.
What can I say about Jill and Gary? Thay are super kind, super polite, collaborative and relaxed. Simply perfect guests. I miss them.
The location allows you to walk and in a few minutes the most important areas of the center: the Two Towers, the Teatro Comunale, the University, Piazza Maggiore, the train station and the main tourist attractions (S. Petronio, Piazza S. Stefano, via Indipendenza) . The fairgrounds can be reached by foot, twenty minutes, or five minutes by several buses, whose stops are located in the streets adjacent to the house.
The area lends itself to shopping unbridled: that of luxury and designer of Galleria Cavour, Via Farini and Via D'Azeglio, to the more accessible (Zara, H & M, Zara Home, etc.), from the typical market gourmet Mercato di Mezzo, riot of colors and flavors, that of Eataly culinary culture.
Bologna is the perfect city to visit the main cities of the north-centre Italy: Florence is 55 minutes by train; Modena 20 minutes; Ferrara 30 minutes; Ravenna 1 hour and 15 minutes; Venezia 1 hour and 25 minutes; Milan 1 hour.
