If there was an option of leaving zero as a rating I would have opted for that. My husband and I have been working hard and saving all year to enable us to have a break at Christmas and enjoy a little luxury. I came across elm cottage on the homeaway site and thought it looked perfect due it's location and the homely cosy feel I got when looking at the photos. Little did I know that this wouldn't be the case when we arrived. Instead of walking into an idyllic cottage by the beach we arrived to find a dated and damp cottage in need of a clean. On further inspection of the cottage we found the upstairs radiators not working properly, the wallpaper in main bedroom was stained and damp, the shower didn't work properly, the bedding was thin and had seen better days, the bedding was also damp meaning my husband who suffers from arthritis had to sleep on the sofa where it was warmer, the front and back doors weren't very secure, you could swing from the cobwebs and the main bedroom had multiple areas of mould. I spoke to the owner of the property who shrugged it off with a poor excuse of it being due to the location of the property. She advised us to use a fan heater to warm upstairs but alas this didn't help. The owner said that if we wanted to leave the property early then she would reimburse us for the number of nights we did not stay. She then went back on her word and wouldn't be refunding anything, we stayed in the property for 3 nights out of 9. I am disgusted by the service and attitude of the owner. We have contacted homeaway and sent the photos and are yet to have a response. Think very wisely before booking this property as it's not as it appears.
The property suited our needs, it appeared as though an update to the property inside and out was needed but did not make our stay uncomfortable. The location was perfect for the town and the st Michaels mount and beyond. Off street parking having a criterion xsara proved tricky getting in and out of the garage something to be aware of. We didn't cook there and ate out everyday some great eating places within walking distance and one night we ordered take away from a pizza place in Penzance great pizza, but the kitchen was equip with what was needed. A concern was the electric, being on a pre paid meter the meter was loaded with an amount and if we happen to run out we were to top it up as per instructions. However we were informed no one has ever run out, but we wondered if we hadn't eaten out and had bad weather and stayed in more would this still be the case. the lama ate floor was handy having a daft Labrador and after arriving and the dog was sick on the rug we clean it and then removed the rug till we departed save any more mishaps. We were charged for this so something to be aware of our dogs house trained but we all get sick. There were enough cleaning products but the vac was insufficient to enable us to clean properly including our dogs shedding hair, so a better vac would have been appreciated. The yard is small and there's nowhere to dry clothes if you wash any, we did construct a washing line but good old British weather and a sunless yard it did not dry quick.
This cottage was perfect for our week away. The location is great, with stunning views of the mount and close (short walk) to town and the beach. The cottage has that typical old style cottage character. Plenty of room, storage and equipment (only thing it would benefit from is a clothes airer to dry items overnight) the garage was great. Garden is a delight....loved the quirkiness of it. Pauline was the perfect host and made us feel very welcome, contact with her was faultless. Definitely would stay again.
Homey and cozy cottage not far from the centre of Marazion and the beach.
The beds are very comfortable and you even have a good view on St. Michaels Mount from one of them.
Some puzzles and games are provided and even quite a few dvds.
Eventhough it is located next to the school it never was too loud in the cottage.
St. Ives, Penzance, Land's End, Porthurno, (St. Michaels Mount of course) and many other sights are only a few minutes away from Marazion so it is a perfect place to stay if you plan on exploring Cornwall.
Some cons are that there are quite a few spiders in the cottage and that the garage is pretty small.
The furniture is a bit worn out and dusty but it all adds to the homey atmosphere.
All in one it was a very good holiday and I would definately stay there again
St Michael's Mount is a short walk from the cottage and is a must-visit while staying in Marazion.
