We happily rent all four cottages on the farm to couples. For the same price as El Balcon you may rent La Cumbre (1622975) our largest house (provided you are 1-2 people), and enjoy the extra space.
El Balcon: On a small organic farm above the Atlantic coast of Asturias El Balcon is a romantic cottage with fantastic views of the mountains and ocean. In quiet surroundings, a short walk up the hill, it enjoys a private setting amid pastures and forest. Beautifully restored it is a sunny cozy hideaway with a wood burning fireplace in the living room, a sun porch off the downstairs and a beautiful balcony adjoining the bedroom. Enjoy our peaceful setting or in just minutes find yourself choosing a beach or a restaurant. We are between the beautiful fishing ports of Cudillero and Luarca, both offering a variety of places to eat and shop. Asturias is perfect for walking and paths lead off the property to include the Camino de Santiago.
El Balcon has been completely restored and is now an attractive, comfortable holiday home for 2. The cottage is on two floors, furnished with a mix of antique and new pieces. Downstairs is the suntrap porch which leads into an open-plan living/dining room with a glass door wood burning fireplace and a sofa. The well-equipped corner kitchen is tiled and easy to work in with a full size refrigerator and a 4 burner cooker with oven. Upstairs the bedroom invites with its large queen-size bed, bathroom, spacious washbasin and sitting area. The large sunny balcony off the bedroom offers unending entertainment as you watch the weather change over the valley and ocean beyond. Not one but two lighthouses can be seen at night, Cabo Peñas and Cabo Vidio.
A short walk up from the rest of the farm El Balcon is just far enough removed to make it the ideal place for people who want to relax or even need a quiet spot to write and work.
El Pajar and Los Balagos are lovely one bedroom cottages on the property and more economical. They are side by side and behind La Cumbre with views of their own. El Pajar enjoys the sunny side and the mountain views although the ocean is visible. Los Balagos is perched over the Valley and enjoys ocean views.
El Pajar: The layout of El Pajar makes it the most comfortable and accessible cottage we have. All on one floor the living/dining and kitchen area are all comfortable together and the bedroom and en-suite bathroom are on the other end. This is one of the original cottages and was for a time used as a hay barn (pajar) until its restoration. It is thoughtfully put together and a lovely holiday home away from home. There is a terrace on the front of the cottage with a table and chairs for dining out as well as another private area through the hedge with another table. It is a lovely lookout point with mountain views and the afternoon sunsets. The inviting hammock hangs between two large ash trees in front of the cottage.
Los Balagos: Our tiniest cottage and an original dwelling. The upstairs is the bedroom and sitting area as well as the en-suite bathroom and loft with a single matress. It has a wood burning stove for warmth and lots of windows with the ocean view. The bathroom window opens onto the flower and vegetable garden. Down the outside stairs is the independent kitchen which works well and offers privacy to anyone still sleeping upstairs. This cottage has a small private garden and lots of terrace space with tables and views where dining out is a pleasure.
La Cumbre(1622975) is a sunny, well-equipped, 4 bedroom house with one bathroom and an open concept main floor. The views are wonderful of the mountains and sea while enjoying a sunny exposure. The private front garden and porch allow for many moments of relaxation. It may be seen by placing the unit number in the location search box above.
The Farm: Access to the property is up a steep and partially paved, mostly gravel road. It is a challenge to the unpracticed but easy enough to master. There is room on the side to park and walk if need be and Pepe is available to help. As with all good things in life the extra effort is well rewarded with beautiful views and a stunning, quiet setting.
Because we are committed to and enjoy our organic lifestyle our linens are washed in natural soaps and sun dried. The house has features which save on energy and firewood is provided for your warmth. We encourage recycling and the chickens are the first step in the composting process. We do not own a tractor or heavy farm machinery therefore the place is doubly safe for children since there is no traffic. Herbs and flowers are free for the picking and we are always happy to share the seasonal abundance of the garden. You are welcome to enjoy and explore the grounds. Pepe loves to share his enthusiasm for Asturias by helping with translations, reservations and tips on where to eat and what to see and do. There is a great deal of information in the house as well as in the 'Resource Center'. Asturias is full of pleasant surprises.
The Area : Walk the hills and coastline of Asturias from the house or in only 10 minutes by car you can be on the beach. There are many to choose from, quiet and secluded to those with all the amenities. Just 20 minutes away are the beautiful bustling fishing ports of Luarca and Cudillero where a wealth of local fish and seafood, as well as typical hearty Asturian dishes await. Go inland and have a look into the past where traditional lifestyles abound and revolve around cattle, both dairy and beef. Market days are not to be missed and arts and crafts shows are common in the summer. The cities of Aviles, Gijon and Oviedo are less than an hour away by car for nightlife, museums, the aquarium, the botanical gardens, cultural events, and shopping. Take the narrow gauge FEVE train instead of the car! We are in western Asturias and Somiedo Natural Park is not to be missed with its thatched mountain cottages and abundant wildlife.
Pepe (Asturias) and Lynn (Colorado) live here all year long. This is our home bought in 1992 when we took the plunge and began wondering where this rural adventure would take us. Now, years later, we have consolidated the property into a handsome little community of two and our cast of characters that come and go in the form of guests, volunteers, animals and neighbors. It is a beautiful place to live and we are happy to share our enthusiasm for Asturias and its wonders with our friends. Lex, our dog, takes it upon himself to make you welcome if we don't hold up our end and the chickens wandering around provide a glimpse into the animal kingdom and its marvels. It just feels right to share this with others. Welcome.
Pepe Palacio purchased this cottage in 1992
Quietly sophisticated you will find all you need for your holiday on this organic, rural, secluded, tranquil setting surrounded by ever changing, stunning views. We offer free wi-fi to keep you connected and our small resource center has a collection of books, dvds, cds, beach toys and equipment, maps and Asturias information.
El Balcon is just as sweet as it is in the photos. What you don't see are the expansive views nor can you appreciate the peace and quiet.
La Cumbre was restored for the owners assuring attention to detail and a working kitchen. The sunny porch is a lovely place to spend the day.
Peace and quiet is guaranteed.
El Pajar and Los Balagos are just right for a break from it all while offering the opportunity to still converse with someone passing by.
We have just returned from a blissful week in this charming cottage. Lynn gave us a very warm welcome and made us feel at home straight away. The cottage was spotlessly clean and well equipped with everything you need for holiday living. We found it to be just as it was described and the info we received prior to our visit was accurate and useful. Lynn has also put together a very useful folder in the cottage of local info on restaurants, walks, beaches etc. Although when we set out on our holiday we had many ideas of trips we might make and meals out we might have in the end we spent most of our time reading on the little terrace or exploring the tracks up the hill behind the property and then barbequing our supper and admiring the view. The view is stunning and constantly changing with the moods of the weather. This spot is beyond quiet - a lot of the time it is silent. We did have a few meals out in Cudillero and Luarca, both very pretty fishing villages with plenty of fresh fish on offer. A visit of Cabo Vidio was also well worth it, the view along the coast was fantastic. If you are looking for a 'get away from it all' holiday this is the perfect place for you, I can't remember when I have ever felt so relaxed after a holiday. We are already trying to work out a date for a return visit next year.

Looking for more room? La Cumbre #1622975 is the same price for couples except in July and August. El Pajar & Los Balagos #443221 are two more small cottages for couples.
NB: The property is up an unpaved drive which can seem challenging the first time for those unaccustomed to mountain driving. We guarantee it well worth the effort. El Balcon is a short 50 mt. walk from the parking lot.
Wind your way up the mountain through scented forests and wildflower meadows to this place of tranquility and timelessness. El Balcon is a gem of a holiday home set in a magnificent landscape combining tradition with cosiness with kind and unobtrusive hosts on hand to advise and help with almost anything. In the land of horreros and Neolithic cave paintings, bean stew and cider, deserted beaches and towering cliffs, wolves and passing pilgrims, wooded valleys and majestic mountains the magic of Asturias captured our hearts in the space of a week. El Balcon was the perfect base for our Asturian adventure. Thank you Lynn, Pepe and Lex.
We stayed for a week in El Balcon. It was just as described on the website. It was clean and well maintained.
Lynn, Pepe and Lex were very helpful.
We spent the week exploring many of the lovely walks around the area.
If you want somewhere to get away from it all - look no further.
A very relaxing base to explore a lovely area from. The description of the propperty was acurate and it was clean, tidy and well maintained. Information on how to get there was very good as was comunication with the owners prior to arriving. There was a very usefull folder with lots of recomendations for walks, places to go and places to eat. We did most of the walks in the surrounding area. I would certainly recomend this propperty.
This wonderful little casita is a perfect couples retreat or a solo travelers base for exploring the area. Close to Asturias' beautiful beaches and picturesque harbors all well as its mountain parks, the house itself affords sweeping views to the cliffs and sea. The kitchen has most anything you need to cook. The bed is very comfy with lovely linens and patios on both levels extend your living space to enjoy meals or lounging al fresco. This is a working organic farm so there are always a host of critters to keep you amused and Lex, the friendly dog, helps with after meal clean up by eating up scraps!! Lynn keeps you supplied with whatever is on tap in the garden. The shower area is a bit tight but the shower head is up high so height not a consideration. There is however a large sink area with room for lots of bits and bobs. House was spotlessly clean and charmingly decorated. I would highly recommend this place to nature lovers, hikers and beach-goers everywhere as a great base to tour Asturias. Or you can just relax, open a book or a bottle of wine, and enjoy the view!
El Balcon is the perfect place to de-stress. It has exceptional views of the hills down to the coast. It is far from any traffic noise, the only sounds the tinkling of cow bells and the humming of the bees. The cottage itself is absolutely charming and very comfortable, with a quaint upstairs balcony and a pleasant outside sitting or dining area. Comfortable deckchairs are provided for the relaxing reading which occupied much of our time, either in the shade of a tree, in the sunshine or on the terrace. There are lovely walks straight from the door, with spectacular views and the chance to stroll along part of the famous Camino pilgrim route. If you can drag yourself away from the relaxation of El Balcon, there are plenty of places to visit, including the seaside town of Cudillero and the beautiful Silencio beach. We also took the local train to the harbour town of Luarca. But mostly we were content to stay at El Balcon. Big thanks to Lynn and Pepe for a warm and friendly welcome and the chance to sample their home-grown produce and recycle our food to the chickens. If there were 6 stars we would give them!
Western Asturias is now accessible due to the new Cantabrican Motorway A8 along the beautiful green Northern Coast. The locals are friendly and the food hearty and abundant. The protected coastline is unspoiled. The beaches along this rugged beautiful coast range from well-kept sandy beaches with lifeguards, snack bars and parking to deserted pebble and sandy beaches that are always well worth the effort it takes to get to them. Asturias is known for its surf and there are a number of surf schools and rental outfits that offer everything you might need to surf. The ocean temperatures range from 57F or 14C in the winter to 73F or 23C in the summer. Bracing but fun. Most of our guests spend a lot of time on the beach in the summer since the temperatures are always moderate, rarely hot. The mountains join the sea in Asturias and there are many natural parks and walking trails. Somiedo Natural Park is much closer than Picos de Europa, less visited and just as beautiful boasting Leonid Vultures and Brown Bears. Thatched mountain cottages add a magical effect to the landscape. Muniellos is a Biosphere Reserve with ancient oaks which requires advance reservations. Caves with prehistoric art are open to visit April - Sept. We are happy to assist with reservations for Muniellos and the caves .
