|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
Situated in the idyllic village of Grange-in-Borrowdale some 4 miles south of Keswick at the southern tip of Derwent Water. The cottage enjoys stunning views of
the Fells with walks to Catbells to the North West and Skiddaw beyond or to Watendlath or a climb up Grange Fell or the Lodore Falls.
The cottage endeavours to capture some of its history as a former barn (probably in the late 1800's whilst offering clean and modern facilities so that you enjoy your stay.
The front patio garden looks over the Green in the centre of Grange and beyond to Grange Craggs, King's How and Grange Fell. What better way to spend a leisurely morning before embarking on a stroll around the two ancient churches or a 12 mile walk around Derwent Water or cycling to Borrowdale or Portinscale. On the ground floor the sitting room has a multi fuel boiler for those cosy winter evenings, freesat TV, a selection of fiction and some games. The spacious kitchen has the usual amenities including a dishwasher and washing machine/tumble drier. Upstairs we have 3 bedrooms for 5 people- a kingsize double with views to Grange Fell and beyond, a large twin room and a single room. The bathroom has a bath with over-bath shower. To the rear of the cottage, a lockable shed has space for 4 bikes. Parking is permitted for 2 cars, one to the front and one to the rear.
The property was a little tired and the small bedroom was smaller than expected (couldn't fit a travel cot in there) but the location was fantastic and the cottage was pretty well equipped.
We had an amazing week there and the weather was lovely and warm. Rock climbing, canoeing, swimming, hill walking and Keswick all on our doorstep - would definitely come back.
Would've been nice to have a welcome pack with milk etc. but with Keswick only 5 mins away and 2 cafe's either side of the cottage this wasn't too big a disappointment.
Thanks for a nice holiday!
Grange is a beautiful small village at the southern end of Derwent Water along Borrowdale road some 4 miles south of Keswick. The River Derwent is crossed over an ancient double arched pack-horse bridge dating back to 1675. How cottage overlooks a small Green in the centre of Grange and has stunning views of the Borrowdale Fells from every window. The cottage is perfect for peace & relaxation and gentle walks, such as the Allerdale Ramble to Seatoller or a walk around the Lake. Or return from Keswick via the Derwent Launch which calls at a couple of Landing Stages nearby to Grange.
With 2 tea rooms, Grange is a perfect place to sit and watch the world go by or to read a novel in the front garden. The Bowder Stone and the Lodore Falls are close by and worth a visit. For Fell walkers, there are walks to Cat Bells or to Grange Fell then on to Watendlath (the Caffle House tea room in Watendlath is a welcome stop). These gentle climbs are always popular and not too demanding. However, keen climbers will not be disappointed as Grange is a great base for ascending Skiddaw, Scafell Pike and The Gables to name just a few.
Rock climbers will be in their element as Little Chamonix (part of Shepherd's Crag) is an absolute classic and lies just off the Borrowdale Road. But if climbing sheer rock faces does not appeal, it can be quite enthralling watching their manoeuvres at Lodore.
Cyclists often come through Grange on a tour of Borrowdale returning from the travails of the Honister Pass along the old packhorse track behind the crags of Castle Cragg. How Cottage has a lockable shed with room for 4 cycles should you wish to bring them.
For a bit of alfresco dining there is a barbecue stored in the shed. There are plenty of good pubs and hotels for eating out in the area. If you wish to self-cater, Booths and the Co-op supermarkets are in Keswick. How cottage has a spacious kitchen with dining table with room for 5.
A must-see is the Honister slate mine which provides guided tours into the mines or try the Via Ferrata track up to Fleetwith Pike (see the photo of our group; the younger contingent were doing rather better than the more seasoned group).
