About Sven & Katleen Daelman - Pattyn

This holiday home is run by Sven Daelman and Katleen Pattyn, both in their early forties, who have 3 boys –Arthur, Baptiste, and Eduard. The couple has lived in the ‘cat city’ since 1997 and purchased the holiday home next to their own house in 2009.

Sven & Katleen Daelman - Pattyn purchased this apartment in 2009

Why Sven & Katleen Daelman - Pattyn chose Ypres

The home was purchased with the intent to move Katleen’s physiotherapy practice into the bottom floor. Because more and more tourists began visiting Ypres, we made the decision not to permanently rent the upper floors, but to rent them on a temporary basis. That’s how this holiday home was born. After a few years of blood, sweat, and tears for renovation, the holiday home was opened up for booking on 28 June 2014. This date was chosen because it is the 100-year anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, the beginning of the Great War.

What makes this apartment unique

'Gîte de Lombard' is located in the city centre, but in a quiet area. The city’s greenbelt, the Fortifications, is just a 20-metre walk away and you can enjoy nature in peace and quiet here. An advantage of this is that you can easily birdwatch from the rooftop terrace. You can reach the most important sights, monuments, museums, shops, restaurants, and bars in the city centre without the stress of taking your car. There is free parking with the blue card that you’ll receive upon arrival. The train station is just 500 metres from the home as well – it’s a simple and relaxing way to visit the rest of Flanders and Belgium. 'Gîte de Lombard' is the perfect place to start your visit to the medieval city of Ypres and the Westhoek.

The apartment is perfectly situated to explore ypres and the flanders area. The apartment is well equipped and the balcony was great to relax on an evening. Sven was really helpful with advice on where to go and what was worth seeing. We will definitely be back.

Lovely home in the heart of Ypres

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully finished and equipped house in a quiet street only five minutes walk from the Cloth Hall. Ideal for exploring the Flanders WW1 sites but equally good for just chilling out and enjoying the Belgian food and drink.

Sven was a helpful, friendly host who made sure we had everything we needed.

The property is excellent.

Clean, well equipped and maintained, with a very welcoming host on arrival.

Quiet location, but within very easy walk distance of everything within Ypres.

Would highly recommend for anyone looking for a comfortable, quality base to visit the battlefields, museums, cemeteries and / or memorials from WW1 or just to visit Ypres and the surrounding countryside.

Fantastic apartment for a Ypres visit

  • 5 of 5

Sven and Katleen are great hosts of fantastic and very modern apartment. The apartment had everything we needed including a welcoming bottle of Belgium beer. Sven and Katleen even reserved a car parking spot for us in front of the apartment as it was a busy in Ypres that day.

The apartment was a short walk from the Menin Gate, restaurants and shops. The kids had plenty of room to spread out and relax also with the balcony.

Overall, great apartment in a lovely spot and recommend it highly.

'Gîte de Lombard' is located in the heart of Ypres, just a stone’s throw from the large, historic market, with its stunning, medieval Cloth Hall, yet just steps from the ‘Vauban’ Fortifications, the city’s lush, green oasis. It’s a perfect place to start exploring Ypres and the Westhoek, with their various attractions and rich wartime history, but also for discovering all the great things the Westhoek has to offer. Tyne Cot in Passendale, the German burial site in Langemark, or the Trench of Death in Diksmuide. There are also various war museums, such as the In Flanders Fields Museum, Hill 62, the Hooge Crater Museum, or Memorial Museum Passchendaele 1917. Or the rolling hilly landscape around Kemmel and its vineyard. These are just a handful of the things to see and do that are just a half-hour’s drive away. Since 1928, the ‘Last Post’, the final salute to the fallen, is sounded every evening at 8 p.m. under the Menin Gate in Ypres.
