Living in Surrey, England, the Loire Valley has provided a haven of peace and tranquility for my husband, myself and our 3 children, who have been visiting every summer since our youngest was 2 years old. As teenagers, they still enjoy the opportunity to slow down and enjoy the real pleasures in life - relaxing "en famille", dining alfresco and taking turns to man the BBQ!
May Simpkin purchased this chateau / country house in 2001
Whether you're holidaying as a family or a large group, this property provides home-from-home comfort for you to enjoy during your holiday. The Loire has proved an ideal location; an easy drive from the ferry and Eurotunnel ports but also very accessible from international airports, whilst still providing a tranquil rural location. We are ideally located to visit the many fabulous chateaux and vineyards in the region. With our local expert sommelier, we are able to arrange unique vineyard visits within close proximity or further afield in this rich wine growing region.
With 4 properties on site, you can holiday as a large group of family/friends whilst having your own accommodation. Our central courtyard has proved an ideal spot to gather for meals and games. Self-catering doesn't mean you have to compromise; we offer the luxury whilst still allowing a relaxed feel. Rarely in France do you find all the bedrooms ensuite; our properties offer this comfort, allowing for all guests to enjoy their own facilities whilst holidaying with others. A comfortable night's sleep is essential during your stay and our beds and crisp white linen have been complemented on a number of occasions. Relaxing on site is a delight and the walled garden surrounding the swimming pool is an ideal sun-trap for lazy afternoons after a day's sightseeing! Despite it's rural location, we are fortunate to have a large out-of-town supermarket complex a mere 5mins drive away; essential for the inevitable daily grocery shopping holidaying as a large group entails!
Every few years we feel an urge to return to rural France. This year we were joined by our grown up, growing and extended family. Our choice of region and accommodation provided a brilliant holiday - living proof that quintessential France is not a myth.
The chateau and its grounds are superb. Lovely spaces for a large family group. The kitchen and eating areas gave us a chance to prepare outstanding local produce and splash the wine. (We had a wine tasting evening one night, when Thierry the local vintner brought over some fine samples and offered tips on reflective slurping.
The pool and other recreational facilities were excellent - varied and well maintained. The houses and grounds are also big enough for periods away from one another; the need for space in a group holiday shouldn't be underestimated. CDLV has lots of interesting spaces both indoors and out in the grounds - maintained to a rustic high standard.
Towns and villages were easily accessible and rich in culture. Large chateaux are not far from a full range of excellent shops and services. Lovely cafes in the local towns were a favourite of ours; you can still experience a strong coffee within the range of wafted Gauloises, while shopping for your morning baguette.
The paths around the estate are perfect for playing boule. We took along our own trophy which was awarded at the end of a great week. It was a highlight of an excellent holiday where we were well provided for and looked after impeccably.
There were 10 of us of various ages in our party so the location was ideal. The swimming pool is superb, plenty for children to do, snooker, table tennis etc. The grounds were lovely and so well maintained by Roger, the caretaker who was always available and most accommodating. each bedroom had its own en suite, always plenty of hot water and only a short distance from an excellent supermarket, zoo and various other places of interest.
As a family of 31, we all had a lovely time here. The properties were perfect for what we wanted (large family get together) and although the road was quite busy and a bit noisy we made full use of the grounds, which are perfect for children.
Roger was great. He opened up the pool and asked if we needed anything regularly, which was lovely. The games were great and pool fantastic.
We made full use of Thierry's services (and shop!), with a wine tasting in the Chateau and a vineyard/wine tour with the children, which everyone loved. The treasure hunt was a great idea. He made each event very easy to organise, which with a large group isn't always easy. He was very flexible and did a super job.
Everyone cleaned and tided their properties, so I trust that you found everything was left in order. The money for the taxes and towels we used was left in envelopes in the properties.
For your other clients, of the things we loved:
The Zoo - everyone enjoyed this.
Canoeing - we took the whole party on the river and it was great fun.
Cycling - this is a lovely thing to have available. We found bikes of all sizes, which was great. Everyone really enjoyed this.
Even though we had a few days of rail overall everyone had a fantastic time. It's a great property.
Great located cottage in the grounds of Chateau De La Vigne with facilities shared between 4 properties. Close to great Zoo at Doue La Fontaine and Saumur as well as Anger and many attractions in the Loire Valley including numerous Chateau. In the heart of many vineyards and wine tasting evenings can be arranged - we had great fun.
Excellent facilities for the children including large pool, pool table, table tennis, play area for ball games and free bikes at your disposal.
We requested a local restaurant to provide a meal for us on arrival which was arranged with no problems and was delicious which took the effort out of the first evening.
Cottage was well equipped and after a week's camping it was a welcome relief to have a comfy bed, tv and a kitchen.
We were a party of 2 adults, 2 children (aged 10 & 2).
Loved the space in the Chateau, the wonderful pool, the garden, and although we didn't have long enough for everything - it was great to have the football pitch, snooker table, table tennis, volleyball etc too
We had 6 children of various ages and there was done thing for everyone.
My husband also loved having a nespresso - like a home from home
The property and extensive grounds are beautiful and we'll maintained. The facilities and equipment provided have been well thoughtout. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. May and her caretaker Roger where excellent hosts. We would highly recommend the venue to others and look forward to booking again soon.
The Loire Valley is a often referred to as the 'Garden of France' due to the abundance of vineyards, fruit and vegetable orchards which line the river Loire. This stunning part of France is noted for its historic towns, architecture and wine. The Loire Valley wine region is world-renowned for it's production of distinctive fruity crisp wines. The area is also known for it's 'bubbles' with any of the local vineyards and champagne houses offering excellent wine tasting tours. You will find some fabulous choices from a very modest budget to the more extravagant. The spectacular opening of the champagne with a sabre sword is not to be missed…!
The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its exceptional cultural landscape of historic cities and villages and of course the stunning architectural monuments - the châteaux; the legacy of its time as home to the French royalty for a century and a half. The River Loire’s width engages a real feeling of space and freedom even during the peak summer tourist season and offers plenty of family-friendly outdoor activities whether you fancy cruising or canoeing/kayaking on the water, cycling along the banks of the Loire or exploring ancient cave dwellings.
The local fabulous zoo in Doue la Fontaine approximately 5mins drive from us, is well worth a visit. The Zoo was originally created out of old stone quarries and underground caves and is now home to a variety of exotic animals including big cats, penguins, reptiles and vultures. It’s conservationist approach has won many of our reluctant guests over!
One of the pleasures of visiting the Loire is to enjoy wandering through one of the many traditional French markets! You’ll find wonderful local fruit and vegetables alongside cheese, bread, patisserie and much more for you to pick up for your alfresco lunch/dinner!
We are fortunate to be located in between two major cities; Saumur, a short 20mins drive, is a beautiful city with it's recently restored chateau majestically overlooking the river Loire and some fabulous quaint shops, including a typical french cheese delicatessen. The excellent selection of restaurants provide an ideal opportunity to enjoy the ambience of the city along with a typical 'confit de canard' and espresso! Saumur is also known for its Cavalry and the famous 'Cadre-Noir' performances as well as other events and tours are available. Angers, a mere 35mins away, is the capital of Maine-et-Loire and steeped in history and character, whilst providing many more amenities typical of a larger city. The shopping in particular is fabulous, with it's own 'Galleries Lafayettes' department stores as well as a number of other fashion chains.
We are well located to combine a visit to EuroDisney in Paris - 1½ hrs by TGV train from Angers. Approx 1hr 15mins, this is a Medieval theme park, Puy de Fou, with live jousting, battles and Falconry. It’s a great day out for the family, with a wonderful night show starting at 10:30pm until 12:30am – booking essential. Well worth a visit!
Take a fantastic journey into space and enjoy a voyage of Fantasy, Discovery, Pleasure and Excitement!! Futuroscope is a great family day out with a huge range of activities. Futuroscope is about 1½ hours away just outside Poitiers.
