Access to the Upper Apartment is via a communal hallway and staircase at our home called Griffin House – the flat covers the whole of the top floor of the property and is totally separated by a wall and door at the top of the stairs .

This 65-sq-metre (700-sq-ft) apartment has a generous size kitchen/diner/sitting room and two good size bedrooms - one that can be set up with twin beds or a UK superking double and one with a UK king double bed. There is also a sofa bed in the lounge.

The fully-equipped kitchen/diner/sitting room has tv, dvd, stereo, dishwasher, fridge, microwave/conventional oven, stove, iron, ironing board, safe, espresso machine and cafetiere (French press).

The flat has a free super fast wireless fibre optic broadband, t and comes equipped with an ironing board and iron, hairdryer and a safe.

The light and airy bathroom features a double Belfast sinks, plus a powerful shower/deep bath.

About Nicholas Kynaston

Hello, my name's Nicholas, I love to travel (who doesn't?) and I am lucky enough to make my living out of it – by being a travel journalist and renting out two holiday apartments in the house I share with my Civil Partner Ben and our dog Barney.

I love gardening too and if you stay you'll probably see me weeding or maybe tending the chickens who live in an 'eglu' at the bottom of the garden.

I believe London is one of the world's greatest cities, so if you've got a question about the capital, don't hesitate to ask.

Unusually for an Englishman I like foreign languages too, and can speak good Spanish, OK German and a bit of French.

Why Nicholas Kynaston chose London

The moment we saw the house, we fell in love with it. It is one of the oldest in area , having been built in 1790 as the vicarage for the local church of Saint Andrews. Stockwell is central but not touristy - it takes just 8 minutes by tube to reach Victoria. It's a multicultural neighbourhood that we are proud to live in and is close to the vibrant districts of Vauxhall, Brixton and Clapham.

What makes this apartment unique

Large windows flood it with light and the 30-metre (100 ft) back garden is unusual in London for being such a good size. When we moved in, the house was in a sorry state, dilapidated and having been used as a squat. We've now restored it to its former glory uncovering marble fireplaces that had been painted over with white paint and lovely wooden floor boards in the process. We love living here and we love having guests to stay.

Very comfortable and relaxing stay in a well-outfitted apartment.

My 2 teenage daughters and me recently spent a week at the upper apartment. We loved the garden, though didn't get to use it much due to weather, the space, the kitchen. It was so convenient having the Costcutter just across the street and 2 tube lines in less than 10 minutes walk. We like fans for the background noise and moving air, and there were 2 in the apartment. One wasn't working and Nick sorted a replacement right away. He also allowed us to do a load of laundry as we'd just come from vacationing in Paris with no laundry facilities and were running out of clean clothes!

Barney was a dear, sweet old dog - he'd often greet us when we came in and get lots of pats and hugs in return. If you don't like dogs it would probably be best not to rent the upper apartment. I thought it might have been a bit awkward to enter Nick and Ben's hallway and stairs every time we came or went, but we got used to it. If they wanted privacy they could close any of their doors, otherwise they didn't mind us passing by.

The wifi worked well and it was nice to have a dishwasher. Just bear in mind that the fridge is a small under counter one, so tall bottles can only fit in the door and there isn't a ton of storage. The freezer is tiny, so can't store whole frozen pizzas etc. It's fine for people not cooking and storing tons of food, and Costcutter is right there that you can buy any large stuff right before cooking it.

Just a tip: if you want to take the train to or from Gatwick, the closest London Terminal is Clapham Junction, which is a 9 pound, 15 minute taxi ride from the apartment (less by Uber probably). From Clapham Junction the journey to/from Gatwick is 25 - 27 minutes via Southern Rail, and trains come quite often. You can also use Oyster to pay. If you are traveling during peak time you avoid a lot of the worst traffic that way. Taking the tube with luggage at peak times is difficult.

Great place to stay

The apartment was clean and very nice. We especially liked the fact that a grocery store was basically just across the street from the apartment. The Stockwell subway station was within easy walking distance. Nicholas was helpful and very nice to work. Since this was our first time travelling outside of the US, we were surprised to find that the beds did not have a top sheet, but had what we considered a top sheet-comforter. This was nice for cooler nights, but it would have been nice to have just a sheet on the warmer nights. Because of our travel plans we were out early in the morning and back late a night, so we did not have an opportunity to ask Nicholas for top sheet or for a fan. We would stay there again, but come to England when it was a little cooler than when we where there.

You would have found spare sheets in the cabinet in the living room where we also have spare pillows, duvets, etc. We do also have fans in our apartments which we set up early June in our apartments. A word or a note would have solved the issue. But Thanks again for the great review.

Fab long weekend in London

we have just had a lovely long weekend in London, Stockwell tube few minutes walk away. Excellent for getting around London. And doing the tourist thing! Barney the dog who welcomed us on our every arrival is a most loveable dog that even non dog lovers would melt their hearts. Flat is ideal for us, 4 adults and 1 teenager, nice and cosy, beds so comfy, bath is huge! Will definitely be coming back. Nick and Ben were away for our stay but they had Gavin there to welcome us and answer any questions we had.

Great and cozy apartment

Had a great time staying here, owners were awesome and very welcoming. About 8 minute walk from tube. At first surrounding do not look great but area its safe! Stayes with the whole family 4 adults and 3 (1 toddler)kids and we fit confortably. Learning how to work the shower temperature was a challange a the begining but once you do it a few times it works great. Everything was super clean! Overall a great place to stay. Thank you guys!!

We are located in Stockwell, an up-and-coming area of London and to reach the West End and City of London, takes just 5 minutes from our local tube (metro) station. We are opposite a small supermarket and have l great local pub as well as an organic bakery and sewing cafe in the area. The trendy 'hipster' area of Brixton is a five-minute walk away, as is bustling Clapham High Street, which is home to over 20 restaurants.

Five minutes walk from us is the district of Clapham with its high street containing over 20 restaurants and pubs.

Brixton, one of London's new trendy areas is 5-minutes walk the other way. Here you'll find Brixton Village, a Victorian former market hall that's' been turned into a must-visit destination with a couple of dozen restaurants, bars and vintage shops packed into its colonnades. And there's Pop Brixton, a fantastic new venture that showcases street food from around the world along with cute vintage shops in a complex made of sea containers with a central seating area where you can listen to live bands and some great djs.
