The Old Barn is a beautiful holiday cottage, converted from an old cow byre and situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The farm: The farm is a site of special scientific interest and produces organic beef, lamb and mutton, which are for sale during your stay (subject to availability).
Walks Etc: The Wessex Ridgeway and the Jubilee Trail cross the farm and there are many long and short walks to try without the need of a car. The cottage is six miles from the sea and there is fishing in the River Hooke, which makes up one of the farm's borders.
River Cottage HQ: We are only half an hours drive away from Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage HQ.
This house is way prettier and the surroundings much more lush than the photo suggests. The owner's gardens are gorgeous, and we enjoyed watching the horses in the adjoining fields and the chickens looking in our windows! (and we enjoyed their fresh eggs for breakfast, too). A table and chairs on the terrace was the perfect location for relaxing with a pre-dinner wine and snacks with views of the gardens, pastures and woods. Inside, rooms are clean and very spacious, and prettily decorated. Skylights keep the bedrooms and bathrooms nice and bright. The kitchen is fully stocked for cooking. Fresh flowers and a bottle of wine were awaiting us on the kitchen table.
Location is very convenient for touring the Jurassic Coast. We enjoyed looking for fossils at Lyme Regis, the spectacular beach scenery at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, and searching for the amusing sculptures at Tout Quarry near Portland. And the Giant of Cerne Abbas gave us a laugh, too.
Dorchester is about 30 minutes away and has big grocery stores, but many pubs serving wonderful food are just a short drive from the house along the scenic country lanes. This is a great location to "get away from it all" while still being near enough to all the attractions of the coast.
The owner, Mandie, was very helpful in lending us her "sat nav" (GPS to you fellow Americans) when we needed to make a mad dash into Dorchester to pick up our daughter at the train station. We got there in record time!
We stayed four days and wish it could have been longer. The whole area is extremely beautiful and there are many cute little towns that would be worth exploring. Hard to believe that this peaceful haven is just about two hours from Heathrow.
