Overview

About the property

6 Large Bedrooms, Stunning Views, Luxurious Glamour Of A Bygone Age

Marine Villa, The Art Deco House offers luxury self catering family holiday accommodation for 14+ people.

A wonderful original Art-Deco House overlooking Sandown Bay on the Isle of Wight which is probably one of the most spectacular self-catering properties in the whole of Southern England.

Offering spectacular sea views (and sunrises) over Sandown Bay towards Culver Cliff, this magnificent villa was built in 1929 and takes full advantage of the cliff-top location, and is probably one of the Isle of Wight’s premium properties.

This grand detached house has decadently proportioned rooms: all main living and bedrooms have large windows topped by stained glass detail, framing the vistas. Art Deco influences include an upstairs sun room with huge sliding picture windows to enjoy the breathtaking sunrises by day and bay illuminations by night. Huge stained glass windows bring out the oak-panelled hallway, magnificent staircase and galleried landing.

Sleeping 14 adults comfortably (plus up to 5 extra guests in bunk beds or sharing rooms- best suited for children/teenagers) across 6 bedrooms (plus the 'Morning Room' which has 2 additional single day-beds), with a magnificent Art-Deco lounge (seating 18 comfortably) and a 20 seater dining table, this house is perfectly suited to a multi-generational family get together (it has mobility access for wheelchair users) for a self catered holiday, where you can treat the magnificent house as your own, with total privacy for your extended family.

Just about all of the furniture has been rediscovered and is lovingly resurrected from the 1930's. From the walnut cocktail cabinet in the lounge (which apparently was used on the Elstree Studios set for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof) to the stunning wardrobe and dressing table suite set in Bedroom 4, which were rescued from a house in East London, this house is simply Art-Deco at it's best.

Start your day in our house, by experiencing the most stunning and beautiful colours of sunrise, by leaving your seaward facing curtains open, even just a little so that you awake naturally. The sunrise photo shown here is a 100% genuine view from the window, taken on a mobile phone!

From the house, there are wonderful cliff top walks (or runs), you are right above the beach (actually it is a lot of steps to get down, perfect for walking off the dinner. If you have the excuse of a pushchair or use a wheelchair, then you may take the more leisurely slope down!) There are lots of cycle routes across the island. The whole of the Isle of Wight awaits you.

Included in the price are all linens (bedding and towels, except cot bedding), and free wifi.

Highest Grade Award by English Tourist Board ( 5 Stars and GOLD STANDARD for Customer Service )

Visit-Britain Mobility Grade 1 & 2

At an additional price, a special dinner including an in-house chef and hostess/stewardess can be provided for the evening or freshly pre-prepared gourmet meals delivered which you simply heat up and serve. A special event cake can also be organised.

The property is fully licensed for alcohol and we can provide a list of carefully selected magnums of wine and some fine champagne (and not at silly prices). For those seriously into wine, we also have a private collection that we can draw some exceptional cases of wine for the discerning palate.

About Laurence Smith

Sharon and Laurence bought this property in 2014 as their one and only holiday let property, which one day, when they both retire, will become their family home. Sharon is an executive in the music industry with a wonderful eye for design and colour. Laurence works in the IT (computer) industry, so leaves all the design to Sharon, he simply has no idea! Look for us on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIN and YOUTUBE, (look for artdecohouseuk and Marine Villa, the Art Deco House.

Laurence Smith purchased this house in 2014

Why Laurence Smith chose Shanklin

This property was bought because we love it, we love the architecture and we love the design. Each year we will introduce more and more Art-Deco 1930's features including more Art-Deco furnishings and furniture. Our goal over the next five years is to make MARINE VILLA one of the leading Art Deco houses in the UK. Uniquely, our business plan is that any profits we make from this house will be reinvested in the house, upgrading it continually. This is our home, and we are delighted to let you borrow it for your holiday or short break.

What makes this house unique

The design of the house is so wonderful and so true to the designs of the Art Deco era. It is a house that as you wander around you will say 'wow!' as you see the original incredible designs of the windows, the views of the sea, the spacious lounge and the sun room. You will not have stayed anywhere quite like this before. We hope that if you stay with us, you and your guests/friends will watch our journey into the incredible designs of the 20's and 30's as we continually take the property back to the luxury and wonder of a bygone age, and maybe, in the years to come, come back and see how it has changed. It is wonderful right now, but will be truly amazing in the years to come.

(we defy you to not say 'wow' as least 4 times when you first arrive!)

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had an absolutely fabulous weekend thank you. The house was amazing and everyone loved it - i'm sure they will be taking about it for a long time. You have certainly put in a lot of effort and it really shows.

Fantastic House and location

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the Marine Villa for 2 nights with 7 friends.

The house is fantastic and in a stunning location. Perfect for summer BBQs.

Lizzie was very helpful and there when we arrived to make sure we knew where everything was and that everything was working.

If I come to Isle if Wight I will try and stay here again.

fantastic long weekend stay with friends

  • 5 of 5

the house and garden exceded our expectations. It was stately with views over the sea from the top storey. The inside had an art deco theme with no expense spared, in the kitchen there was everything you could possibly need. American fridge-freezer and to our delight, (there were 10 of us) there were 2 dishwashers. we did the huge, stately dining room justice with banquet feasts (one evening we used the outside barbeque) the beds had top of the range tempur mattresses which were not too hot like some. the weather was a bit cold because it was October, so we didnt use the outside dining table or sun loungers, but it would be excellent for hot weather. the gardens were grand with a large well kept lawn with a central pond and fountain ( which wasnt on) there was fish food in the house to feed the fish in the pond. Wed would like to thank Laurence and Sharon for allowing us to share their much loved home

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review, and thanks for looking after our home. Its great to hear you did the dining room justice with some big meals, we love doing that too, its such a grand room, anything small, just doesn't do it justice! Please come back over the next couple of years, we are continually striving to improve the house and take it back in time to the 1930's but with all mod-cons! It is our own wedding anniversary next weekend, and there is only one place we can think of going to celebrate it...and that is Marine Villa, The Art Deco House, this really is our home, that we love to share and we love people appreciating all the work we put in to make Marine Villa special and unique, and a home!

Fabulous location

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a break for a large family The Art Deco House at Shanklin will do very nicely. The family owners are clearly passionate about this lovely house that takes you back in time to when children would play hide and seek in the magnificent gardens for hours, which ours did.

Beautiful dining room, good bedrooms and fitted out to the period when one dressed for dinner. A unique experience on the cliff top of Shanklin which boasts a magnificent beach with an abundance of cafe's, restaurants and bars.

This is not a City, it is an average sized seaside town.

Owner's Response: Thanks Lee, we are so pleased you enjoyed our time machine of Marine Villa, The Art Deco House and were transported back to a bygone age! Shanklin has much to offer, but you need to seek it out. The beaches are actually quite spectacular (and we promise, in the winter months too!). There are some great places to eat (and a few not so great too!!). We love our house (and seaside home) being enjoyed by family groups, its that icing on the cake for people to enjoy, what genuinely is our labour of love!

A Very Special Place!

  • 5 of 5

The unique Art Deco style and ambience, together with the wonderful location, make Marine Villa an exceptional property. The spacious rooms, large garden and panoramic sea views afford a wonderful feeling of opulent relaxation. Our visit was for a 70th birthday celebration with all of the family. One of the presents was a personalised monopoly board game with all of the places and streets important in those 70 years. Mayfair was Marine Villa! It certainly deserves that position! Laurence and Sharon, thank you for allowing us to share your home to make such happy memories.

Owner's Response: Thanks Susan for your lovely review. We loved being a secret for the birthday boy until you all arrived at Marine Villa, The Art Deco House, that really is doing it in style! We are so pleased to have such different groups of people enjoying Marine Villa and respecting our home too (the group that followed you were a group of 'mature men' having a pre-wedding grown up drink together for a few days and the group after that were several young couples all going away together post graduation!). We do hope you will come back soon, and stay a little longer next time! Happy 70th Birthday to the Birthday Boy! Laurence and Sharon.

Lovely Art Deco house

  • 4 of 5

The house was a wonderful homage to Art Deco, great facilities, and a lovely location. The only downside to the property is that if you have toddlers there is a large sunken pond in the garden which is obstructed from every seating area view, this doesn't allow for a relaxing break if you have any under 3s! For older children (who can trust won't fall in) it's a lovely large place to run around in.

Owner's Response: Thank for staying and for telling us how much you enjoyed yourselves. We are sorry that you had a concern about the ponds, but we do clearly mention in our words on this site about the house that there are ponds and we even mention it in our welcome letter, guest information guide and there are signposts by the ponds. However we certainly will undertake a further risk review as customer safety is paramount of course and we will continue to emphasise very young children should always be supervised in the gardens at Marine Villa, The Art Deco House. Thanks for staying and we hope to welcome you back another time!

Amazing place to stay

  • 5 of 5

There were 3 generations of the family staying. 13 in total.

Very well equipped and more glasses than most pubs have. Only slight downside is that en suite was not in vogue when the property was built. There are however enough bathrooms to allocate one to each bedroom, so only a very minor problem.

It is definitely in a much better condition that all other placed that I have stayed in and it is obvious that it is also the home of the owners.

It was very cold when we were there, but the heating system was up to it.

The Hidaway bar and restaurant is a 5 minute walk from the back gate and is open for breakfast. So no need to do too much cooking.

We all enjoyed ourselves, and have happy memories of Grandads 70th Birtday treat for the family.

Owner's Response: Hi there, and thanks very much for your review. We know it was probably one of the coldest weekends of this winter, but it was great you managed to enjoy yourselves 'out of season' and the central heating was certainly up to keeping you all very warm. Fully get your point about the fact the bathrooms, while all very modern are mainly not en-suite (except for 2), but we made the decision it would ruin the house if we made such a dramatic change to the bedrooms, so we kept it that way. We are planning to introduce robes this year so people do not have bring their own!!! It really is our home, and we are delighted that shines through! Marine Villa is the perfect place for a multi-generational get together, probably 60% of our bookings have 3 (or more!) generations staying! Thanks very much for looking after Marine Villa and we hope to see you again some time....(try coming when it is a bit warmer next time, so you can enjoy lying around in the garden too!) All the best from Laurence and Sharon
