The Center-Val de Loire (called Center before January 17, 20153) is a French administrative region that includes three historic regions: Berry, Orléanais and Touraine. The southeastern end of the territory was part of a fourth province: the Bourbonnais. Part of the region lies in the natural region of the Loire Valley. Seventh region by its area, the Center-Val de Loire covers 39,151 km2. With 2.58 million inhabitants on 1 January 2014, or 4% of the metropolitan population, the region ranks 12th in the country, making it one of the least populated regions in metropolitan France. Its density of 66 inhabitants per km2, half of that of metropolitan France, makes it a sparsely populated region. The population density is higher on the Loire axis where half of the inhabitants live.
