About the property

Spacious, 3 bed 2 bath, balcony & sea views, quiet location, downstairs bedroom

This spacious modern property is situated at the edge of the village just a short stroll (2 mins) from the sea front. Estrella de Mar is a small seaside village with a number of bars and restaurants all within a short walk of the house. Beware of properties which claim to be near the beach but are actually located on a golf resort a 30 minute drive away!

The house is very well appointed internally and has an attractive private patio garden with seating, sun-loungers and a BBQ. The garden is enclosed and therefore safe for children. It also has balcony with table and chairs and a great view across the Mar Menor and the surrounding countryside.

The property has three bedrooms two upstairs and one downstairs. Normally one room is set up with a double bed and the others with singles but it is possible to set up all bedrooms with single beds if preferred. There is a bathroom upstairs and a shower room downstairs. The living & dining area is open plan.

We live just 10 mins from the property therefore you can be assured that if you have any problems we are just around the corner.

Information on Estrella de Mar:

Estrella de Mar is a small seaside village with a number of bars and restaurants all within a short walk of the house. It is a pretty village with wide streets and a number of parks.

The village beach club has a large swimming pool, tennis courts, table tennis, mini golf, children’s play area and a multi-sport zone; these are free for your use with just a small charge for tennis.

The large communal pool is situated a 5 minute walk from the house. It is just behind the promenade and next to a café. We specifically chose not to purchase a property which had a pool next door as you would get noise all day from children playing in the pool, in fact this can continue well into the night!

The pool is for the village of Estrella de Mar and is not open to the general public, we provide you with an electronic key to get in. Many houses in the village have pools of their own so it doesn't tend to get overcrowded.

The small Spanish town of Los Urrutias is a 3 minute walk; it has a supermarket, hardware shop, newsagent, several cafes and restaurants, a marina and a market on Thursday mornings.

Suitability for Elderly or Disabled:

The property is WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE except for single step at front door; a private bedroom and shower room are on ground floor. Please note: you cannot fit a wheelchair in the shower room.

Estrella de Mar and the surrounding area is flat so the walk to the beach, the promenade and the restaurants are all on the level.


The Mar Menor is a huge salt-water lagoon, the ideal location for all types of watersports and very safe for swimming. Its calm shallow waters are really warm and shelve very gently so it is ideal for small children.

Information on lots of activities is available at the villa including: hiking, thermal baths, golf, diving, bike hire and mountain bike routes, water-sports, horse riding, go-karting, bowling, paint-balling etc.

We run a watersports company called Aqua Adicta and offer dinghy sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, SUP (stand up paddle) and power boating. Our activities are suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities. We also have a website which has lots of information on local activities simply type “aqua adicta things to do” into Google and you will find it.

There are 7 golf courses within a 30 minute drive to cater for all handicap levels and budgets. La Manga Club, famous for its sporting facilities, is just 10km away. 3 top class 18 hole golf courses, a football centre that attracts premiership teams for winter training, tennis centre, bike hire, hotel, spa and gym.

The area is very popular with cyclists. If you enjoy road biking there are flat routes all around the Mar Menor and those who enjoy hills should head for the area around La Manga Club, Portman and La Union. Mountain biking is also very popular; there are some great off road trails and the Calblanque Natural Park offers challenging cycling and amazing views.

Bars & Restaurants:

There are a number of good very reasonably priced restaurants and cafes most within a 10 minute walk. The English restaurants have free entertainment during the weekends and also run quiz nights, BBQ evenings and other activities on a regular basis.

Why Julian and Lesley Singleton chose Cartagena & Mar Menor

We specifially chose this property as we wanted somewhere quiet, close to the beach but also close to local aminities like shops and restaurants. The house is 2 minute walk to the beach but not right down on the promenade where you would get a lot more hustle and bustle. It is located in a quiet street at the edge of the village overlooking countryside and the Mar Menor. It is also just 15 mins to Murcia airport so you don't have to waste lots of time travelling (we do not get flight noise)

What makes this house unique

The village of Estrella de Mar is very pretty and has several communal parks and gardens. There is a beach club with a lovely swimming pool, play area for the kids and multi-sport area for bigger kids. You can head down to the beach club if you want to socialise and head back to the house for a bit of peace and quiet! There are 5 restaurants / bars in the village and many more in the neigbhouring village of Los Urrutias. If you want shops you will find a few small stores in Los Alcazares but more serious shoppers need to head to Cartagena or Murcia. The area is ideal for those who like to explore, the Calblanque Natural Park is just 10 minutes away and has some of the best beaches in Spain, it is also great for walking and cycling in the cooler months. The pretty fishing port of Cabo de Palos is 15 minutes drive which has lovely beaches, great fish restaurants and also some great walks around the lighthouse and rocky headland. We love living here and have no plans to leave...we hope you will love it too!

Excellent Stay

Have stayed at the property many times over the years and would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone wanting to stop in the area. The house is always very clean and has everything you need for your holiday. The garden is lovely to sit out in the afternoon. The property is within easy walking distance of the few bars and restaurants in the village and the supermarket and beach are handy too.

A lovely house in an ideal location

We had a lovely holiday. The house was ideal; it was in a great location, very comfortable and well equipped. The information pack and emails were really helpful. If we are back in that part of the world we will definitely stay again.

Sunny relaxing holiday

We have just returned form a 2 week stay at this home which is well equipped and everything worked efficiently. Our plan was to stay and sunbathe at the house but sadly this was not possible as the sun does not get to the sunbathing area at the front until afternoon, that plus the fact that the road was being dug up outside and the fields locally were being spread with chicken manure, which really made for a terrible smell, meant that we had to re think our plans. There was also a covering of reddish dust each day which required cleaning in order to use the outside tables and seating. However these things are just part of life in a rural area and we adapted by getting up and out each day exploring the area. We left the car at Los Nietos station and went for the day to Cartagena, roamed the length and breadth of Mar Menor, the local beach was cordoned off. My other plan was to have a swim in the village pool each day however the hours that it was open were limited ( I had hoped for an early morning session) also there are no sun beds round the pool and the few chairs that are there were occupied with peoples clothing so my husband had to sit in the café which is right next to it. The pool is clean and well maintained however despite the fact that there are clean changing/shower rooms next door the swimmers seemed to feel it was totally acceptable to strip naked when they got out of the pool and change in full view of everyone, No doubt just a cultural difference but a bit shocking to a prudish brit.

We enjoyed a peaceful walk each day along all of the local promenades, they were usually almost empty but sadly there was lots of dog faeces, until this is policed effectively as it seems to be along the front at Los Alcazares, it does spoil otherwise pretty areas. The local shops are friendly and for a bigger shop Lidl and Consum at Los Alcazares cannot be beaten on price and selection. The only downside to these big supermarkets is that they look like they have been built on a land fill site as there is so much rubbish strewn around especially at the back. There are large areas in this part of Spain where there is a great deal of rubbish especially plastic, perhaps this would be less noticeable if there was more vegetation earlier in the year. We were amazed to see the farmers had ploughed all the plastic into their fields, perhaps its biodegradable but it looked very odd.

We take great pride in our house and keep it very clean and well looked after which is why all our other reviews have 4 or 5 stars. ....I would like to highlight the final statement which is a good summary. “…lovely sunny break, nice clean house in safe area, great for cycling “ I´m sorry about the ploughing and the road maintenance but these things will happen from time to time. Here is some other information which you may find useful 1....The swimming pool is open every day from 9am until 8pm (end of April to mid-October). There is a café/restaurant next to the pool where you can relax with a drink or snack. 2....Estrella de Mar is very clean and well cared for. It has several parks and even a pond with turtles. 3....The house has two terraces one front and one at the back so you can get sun at the back in the morning and at the front in the afternoon. 4....The house is located in a rural area it makes the prefect break for those who want a bit of peace and quiet and also wish to explore the area around. There is a huge amount to see and do including exploring historic cities with their architecture or museums or enjoying the outdoors with the beaches, watersports, walking and cycling.

Lovely compact townhouse

We booked the house because friends own a place on one of the nearby golf resorts and we wanted a place so that we could see them. My parents also stayed with us for 10 days of our stay so It was nice to have the extra bedroom downstairs and the two bathrooms.

The outside terrace and upstairs balcony were fully utilised for al fresco breakfasts and a couple of barbecue nights. The house has some decent restaurants nearby and a small local supermarket which is ok for your daily needs. Be aware that if you arrive on a Sunday and need supplies you will have to travel to one of the larger supermarkets in Los Urruitas or San Javier as the smaller places will be closed.

We preferred the beaches on the Med Coast rather than the Mar Menor ones, either South towards La Manga or North of San Javier. All are easily accessible within 20 minutes or so.

Reasonable value for money,especially considering we were in school holiday times. The owners were quick to answer any questions by email and easy to deal with.

Lovely well kept house with nice garden

We had a relaxing time in this lovely property. Having stayed at many similar properties throughout France, Portugal and Spain, we were delighted with the high standard of presentation, cleanliness and comfort here. It had a well equipped kitchen, excellent WiFi and a lovely garden. The owners met us at the property and went through everything with us, which was spot on. The resort itself is very quiet with just a few restaurants and no shops. There is a good grocery store in the next village which is well stocked and is about an easy 5 minute walk away from the house. There is a large Mercadona Supermarket about 10 miles away in Los Alcazares which was an easy drive with good parking undercover up a ramp above the store. The beach was a little disappointing as it appeared uncared for but we accept that we were there out of season. We ate out twice, both times at Paddy Singh's which is just at the end of the road. We had the Indian menu one night and the English menu on the other and both meals were excellent! They even had gluten free beer available. We would highly recommend this property for a relaxing holiday. It is near the airport with excellent access to the motorway network and makes an excellent base for exploring this wonderful region of Spain.

Owner's Response: We are really glad you enjoyed your time in our house . We try very hard to ensure everything is just as it should be so that you can relax and enjoy your holiday. Regarding the beach; the area between the marina of los Urrutias and the beach at Estrella de Mar is silting up due to the causeway to the marina. The council have actioned work on the area to rejuvenate this zone which is due to start shortly. The majority of the beach will not be disturbed by this work as it is just affects the left hand side which is closest to the marina.

Murcia airport (MJV) is only 15 minutes away and Alicante (ALC) airport is 1 hour.

Car rental is recommended to make the most of the area. We can arrange airport transfers if you prefer not to drive. We also have a driver who can take you on trips to visit the many beautiful beaches and places of interest in the area for example: Cartagena, Cabo de Palos, Los Alcazáres, Murcia and the Calblanque Natural Park.

The area is very flat and therefore ideal to explore by bike, these can be hired and delivered to the house (you will need to arrange this before your holiday).

There is a train which runs from Los Nietos to Cartagena; it runs 7 days a week all year round. Buses also run from Los Urrutias (3 mins walk) to Cartagena, Murcia and Los Alcazáres. In the summer buses also run to other beach resorts around the Mar Menor and also to Cabo de Palos.

Places to visit:

A 5km drive takes you to LOS ALCAZARES, an old fishing town that has grown into a popular resort. Excellent shallow sandy beaches particularly safe for children as there are no tides or currents in the Mar Menor lagoon. Also come here for shops, supermarkets, restaurants and bars.

There are many beautiful Mediterranean beaches to visit within 10mins drive including the CLABLANQUE NATURAL PARK (10km) which is our favourite place to visit in the area. The Calblanque has beautiful long sandy beaches (some naturist) and natural countryside for walking and cycling.

CABO DE PALOS (12 km) has a lighthouse and a lovely old harbour well known for its fish restaurants and world class scuba diving at the Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve.

The historic cities of Cartagena (20km) and Murcia (30km) are just a short drive away; both cities have much to offer with attractive architecture, historical sites, cafes, restaurants and shops.

LA MANGA DEL MAR MENOR (14km) is the place to go for nightlife (during the summer months), shopping, water activities and great beaches.
