Overview

About the property

Cosy cottage in the Lake District, with exposed beams and log fire.

Situated in a quieter part of the Lake District with easy access to the south and western Lakes and Solway Coast, this cottage is an ideal family holiday cottage at any time of year with a garden for relaxing in on sunny days and a cosy open fire for winter evenings.

The picturesque village of Great Urswick is awash with history from the hill fort to the ancient village church. The village tarn provides the perfect place for lazy days spent picnicking or fishing. Walks over Birkrigg common are accessible from the village and will reward you with panoramic views over the Furness Peninsula, Morecombe Bay and the fells of the nearby Lake District. Just three miles from the village is the traditional market town of Ulverston, famed for its diverse range of festivals throughout the year. The pretty cobbled streets are littered with specialist shops, cosy pubs, traditional markets and cultured hotspots. South Lakes Wild Animal Park is only a short drive from Oronsay, here you can hand feed giraffes and walk amongst wallabies, kangaroos and lemurs.

Oronsay has been delightfully refurbished, blending modern design with the irreplaceable charm of old exposed beams, pretty latched doors and traditional fireplaces. Cosy nights can be spent dining in front of the open fire or in the warmer months enjoy a glass of wine alfresco in the quaint garden.

About Rachel Hunter

I am a young professional currently living in Liverpool and working as as Senior Designer in one of the UK’s biggest online retailers. I love the country, walking, running, arts and culture.

I am married with a 4 year old daughter and I have a twin sister.

Rachel Hunter purchased this cottage in 1982

Why Rachel Hunter chose Great Urswick

My late mother bought the property when I was 6, my sister and I had an amazing childhood in the cottage and village. 3 years ago sadly we lost our mother, and we wanted to keep the property on so we spent a year and lots of money renovating it to the standard it is today.

What makes this cottage unique

It has beautiful views of the tarn and is in an idyllic village which is steeped in history. It is 16th Century and used to be an old wash house. It was merged into the cottage in-front originally, then it was made into 3 cottages, now, we have merged 2. Only through renovation work it has a couple of straight walls, all of the others are crooked! It has beams that have come from viking ships.

My mother did a lot of travelling, the house is named after the SS Oronsay, a ship which she sailed to Australia on. She visited many countries and you can see artefacts from her travels on the walls.

We loved our stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely weekend at this cottage. The beds were very comfortable, and the house had everything we needed. We sat out in the garden and the kids also really enjoyed playing out in the garden. We enjoyed cooking together (first time we used a slow cooker!), sitting around the dining room table having lengthy meals and using the sitting room at night to hang out in. Very conducive to a relaxing break. Excellent value for money. Would definitely book this cottage again. The owner is also very friendly and helpful.

Amazing

Wonderful family get together at this beautiful, comfortable and well equipped cottage. Ideally situated for pleasant walks. We enjoyed a morning at the Stan Laurel museum. Log fire was amazing and enjoyed ourselves emensly. Would recommend a stay here. Owner was helpful and efficient, and knowledgeable of the area. Can’t wait to stay again. Thank you.

Chilled out three days

  • 3 of 5

We had a lovely stay with our family but there are three issues I'd like to bring to your attention.

Firstly one of the single beds had slats missing on the bed base, this made the mattress sag through the gap during the night (uncomfortable) When my granddaughter first sad on the bed when we arrived she near went straight through it.

Secondly the pillow cases on the bed in the en-suite bedroom smelt on our first night they we clearly not clean pillowcases they smelt of sweaty head and dirty hair, I had to wash them.

Thirdly I think you should forewarn your guest of the noise the macerator toilet makes in the en-suite. It woke us up several times throughout the night.

Owner's Response: Hi Ann, Thank you for your response it's always good to get feedback, we rely on a maintenance company as we live well over 100 miles away but I'll forward this on. I believe it was children jumping on the beds which broke the slats this had since been rectified and the guests were deducted the money to fix this from their deposit.the pillows is s concern but will bring this up. The macerator is a necessity as the main water pipe is at the other end of the property it should only go off if people use the facilities in the ensuite. I hope you had a lovely stay despite this. Kind regards Rachel

Delightful homely cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a relaxing, delightful stay at Oronsay cottage. It had all the creature comforts and made one feel at home. It's situated in a beautiful part of the lakes with good access to the rest of the lakes district

Rachel was a superb host and dealt with a glitch we had with the boiler immediately and generously. Would definitely recommend Oronsay

Quaint country living

  • 4 of 5

Charming cottage in a pleasant village just outside Ulverston. The cottage was very comfortable and accommodated our family of six adults and two children. The amenities at the cottage were great especially in the kitchen which had everything we needed to cook, even a roast dinner. We would definitely consider staying here again. Rachel (the owner) provides lots of local information prior to arrival and answered all of my questions when asked.
