Overview

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday villa in Tortola - Kerensa Villa

Villa, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Perched on a hillside above a secluded Bay on Tortola’s North West coast and situated amongst large boulders and mature trees, is the uniquely idyllic retreat of “Kerensa” The house is built on a private 2 acre estate bordering Mount Healthy National Park. It was carefully designed to have minimal impact on the beautiful natural setting and take full advantage of the stunning panoramic views over the Islands and Bays of the North Shore. Far away from any other houses, most of the time, the only sounds you hear are the waves on the rocks far below....

By combining colourful Caribbean style with quirky antiques and flea market finds from Europe the owners have created an aesthetic, highly individual dwelling that delightfully complements the spectacular location. The house is simple, comfortable and well equipped with accommodation consisting of one bedroom, a bathroom, dining area and a kitchen / living room together with a covered veranda, a brick courtyard and wooden decks around an infinity edge pool and hot-tub area.

The bedroom has an elegant and very comfortable queen size bed with stylish antique furniture and polished wooden floors. There is also a very quiet A/C unit in the bedroom if you prefer to close the doors at night. Adjacent is a bathroom with a Turkish marble sink and a unique, private indoor/outdoor shower area. Fine quality towels and linens are provided.

The kitchen / main room is equipped with a professional Viking stove, stainless steel fridge with ice and water dispenser, coffee maker, blender, toaster and everything else you might need. There is also a quiet A/C unit to cool you down or you can simply open all the glass doors and let the breezes flow through. Outside the kitchen there's a modern Weber gas grill for Barbequing

The recently upgraded audio visual system includes high speed wifi, Bose 5:1 Surround sound, outdoor speakers, Samsung Smart TV and a powerful Sony receiver capable of connecting to many devices including guests own smartphones and tablets if you have your own music. Netflix and Spotify accounts are provided for streaming movies and music along with several other entertainment options. A local phone is available for your convenience with free local and US calls.

One of the loveliest features of Kerensa is the beautiful infinity edge pool. A sophisticated salt water chlorine generator system keeps the water crystal clear and gently sanitised without harsh chemicals. Lights in the pool can be controlled remotely from the house and depending on your mood, can be set to subtle fading colours, plain white (or even flashing disco!). There is also very private hot tub nestled among the boulders with a view across Shark Bay. Surrounded by fairy lights strung in the trees at night, the setting is truly magical.

Close by are the world class beaches of Brewers Bay (3 minutes by car) which features an uncrowded half mile of golden sand and superb snorkeling and Cane Garden Bay (10 minutes) with its’ famous beach and plethora of lively bars and restaurants. Just along the coast to the East are two stunning, white sand and very out of the way beaches - Trunk Bay and Rogues Bay, that you can often have just to yourself. Kerensa is centrally situated to explore the island. Roadtown (the capital) is 15 minutes over the hill on the South Shore.

Access from the public road is along a short unpaved track (a 4WD vehicle is advisable), once inside Kerensa' s remote-controlled electronic gate the driveway is fully paved. The parking area has been deliberately sited away from the house to preserve the natural ambience, with a series of steps (39 to be precise!) leading down to the house.

“Kerensa” is the Cornish word for love and if you’re looking for a unique and romantic retreat, "far from the madding crowd", look no further....

About Ben Bamford

Jessica is a native born Tortolan while Ben is originally from Cornwall in the UK. We live a few miles along the coast from Kerensa with our two young children. We also run The Last Resort, a well known restaurant and bar in Trellis Bay

Ben Bamford purchased this villa in 1998

Why Ben Bamford chose British Virgin Islands

We bought the land in 1998 because of the seclusion and the amazing views and then built the house a few years later. We originally planned to build several villas on the large plot but loved the fact that Kerensa was so private that we decided to keep it that way.

NIRVANA DEFINED

  • 5 of 5

The definition of Nirvana is a state of perfect happiness; an ideal or idyllic place. This also defines Kerensa House.

We planned an 8-day charter sail of the BVI's and afterwards a few nights stay at Kerensa House. Our sailing trip had totally relaxed us...or so we thought. When we arrived at Kerensa house, we made our way through a wooded area down the long rock stairway and discovered a spot so serene that we did not want to leave.

Everything about Kerensa house characterizes a perfect Caribbean getaway. Terra cotta stucco trimmed in Caribbean blues, open dining area (just calling for a dinner party), a cool blue and white bedroom furnished with a most-comfortable 4-poster bed complete with a crystal chandelier in the sitting area and a bathroom to die for with an outdoor shower.

A perfectly appointed great-room includes antiques, artwork, and books, a kitchen on one end, a sofa that folds out and high-tech WiFi, TV, Bose speakers and A/C.

The house's balconies and porches have rocking chairs or lounges for sleeping, reading or day-dreaming. But the real calming effect comes when you step out to the vista. The infinity pool stretches out over a 180º view of The Caribbean Sea with tiny sailboats catching the wind up and down the waterway, silhouettes of distant islands and drop dead sunsets. Behind the pool finds a pergola with a vine of wisteria-type purple blossoms and comfy seating.

We have been visiting the BVI's since 1976...sailing and renting houses. I can only say this...DO NOT MISS the Kerensa House experience...it's one of a kind...and you will leave with a real sense of tranquility.

Couple's Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Dear Ben & Jess,

To say that my wife & I enjoyed our stay would be a massive understatement. The entire week at Tortola was magical and without a doubt the best part was the time that we spent together at Kerensa. Everything was absolutely perfect. The solitude, ocean sounds, and beautiful views make it one of the most special vacation destinations that the two of us have ever experienced. The salt water pool, rather than chlorine, was an added bonus. Sunsets & drinks poolside made for magical photographs. Having the pool lights on at night made for a very romantic setting and we often danced poolside while listening to your excellent indoor/outdoor sound system. We loved the furnishings and decor, so many nice little touches. Everything was well stocked, from kitchen utensils to snorkel gear. I loved the large cutting board.

Other highlights for us included the hot tub situated amongst the dense foliage with fairy lights which made for relaxing evenings of star gazing. The outdoor shower was wonderful and really made you feel like you were away from home and on a vacation. The french doors, the decor, and the robin's egg blue walls in the bedroom made waking up each morning delightful.

We both really enjoyed meeting you Ben. We felt that you really went out of your way as a host to accommodate us and make us feel comfortable. We appreciated the tips on places to eat and things to do, but we found that when we did venture out we were always anxious to return back to Kerensa to experience it’s solitude and beauty.

Our stay at Kerensa was one of the most special experiences of our lives and my wife and I truly appreciate the opportunity to stay as guests at your house. I told everyone that we met in Tortola about the wonderful villa where we were staying and I have recommended it as a destination for all of our friends here in the U.S. My brother will be getting married in the near future and we’ve told him that a honeymoon at Kerensa is a must.

We are also already planning for a return visit in a couple of years for our anniversary/50th Birthdays.

Leave the world behind!

  • 5 of 5

Amazing house, very secluded with all the amenities, pictures do not do it justice. We are still reflecting on our week at Kerensa, great place to recharge the batteries escape from reality and rekindle the fire. The attention to detail from the outside grill to the pool and hot tub being spotless and ready to go. Some of our favorite things about the house are the outdoor shower, as well as the hot tub hidden in the trees. The owner of the house Ben, very knowledgeable of the island and very nice guy. If you needed anything he was a phone call away. This is a trip we will never forget, and if we had stayed anywhere else it would not have been the same! Here are a few things that you need to do while on the island. Have sunset dinner at Bananakeet café. Dancing at Quito's in Cain Garden with Quito himself playing the jams. Take the ferry from the East End to the original Pussers on Marina Cay for a great lunch and free ferry ride. Definitely take the ferry to Virgin Gorda and swim snorkel and sunbathe at the baths. Most importantly have a painkiller and enjoy being on the island time!

Absolutely Perfect Honeymoon - Karensa!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I are in our early fifties. We are lifelong best friends and this past summer we took our kids and got married in St. Croix. We stayed in an amazing beachfront Villa and got married on a catamaran. We had a perfect wedding with our family but we also immediately started searching for a place to get away by ourselves.

After narrowing it down to Tortola and St. John we spotted Karensa. The reviews were positive. The pictures were amazing. The price was perfect. It was open for the week we were looking at so we booked it.

As everyone mentioned, Ben is an amazing host and while the pictures and reviews were all glowing, they do not do it justice. That view is a million dollar view! We just couldn’t get enough of relaxing by the pool, watching the sail boats go by and the sun setting over the islands in the background.

Karensa will make you think you are vacationing in the rain forest and at the same time the sound of the ocean and views will remind you that you are just a few steps away from the Caribbean. The villa is very private and the landscaping is stunning. Absolutely loved how they built the villa into the side of the mountain, retaining all of the large boulders as you walk down to the villa.

The villa is very romantic. Rather than “rustic” we found it simple and charming. We spent the entire week soaking up each other, listening to music and getting lost from the real world. No news, no sports, no TV, other than a couple movies in the evening time. It provided everything (which in some cases less is more) that we were looking for.

We have a rule, too many places to see so we don’t normally return. At the end of the trip we both agreed we have to come back to celebrate “us” in the near future. I can’t say this Villa is for everyone but if you value your time with your spouse like I do mine, stop looking.

BTW, we did have some weird issue with the hot tub. It lost water on the first night. Ben came out and looked at it. Ended up filling it up and it didn’t leak anymore during the week. Only other issue was that it was hard to control the cold water in the shower (We LOVED the outdoor shower). Plenty of hot water but hard to get the cold just perfect. I only mention this to try and give a balanced review….seriously, I really struggled to find any issues.

Thanks Ben for the wonderful memories we took home with us. Look forward to returning someday soon!

Can't stop thinking about it!!

  • 5 of 5

Where to begin?! Our adventure began with a 45 minute ferry ride across the teal coloured waters of the Pacific. We were greeted by our gracious host, Ben, who took us to our little piece of paradise we were privileged to call home for one week. (Next time we are definitely staying longer)

The pictures you see are just but a glimpse of what Kerensa has to offer. This villa has all of the modern day conveniences you could want whilst maintaining the island charm we were looking for. The furnishings are both rustic AND comfortable. You have access to wifi, outdoor speakers, endless music selections, a big screen TV, movies (Netflix), a brand new Weber Bbq (my husband was thrilled) and telephone. The overall condition of the villa was SUPERB! Very clean and well kept. There was no shortage when it came to luxurious linens or supplies.

Ben, a 30 year resident of Tortola, was extremely helpful with the planning of our vacation. He made himself available whenever we called upon him and was eager to suggest places to visit on the island.

The panoramic views from your VERY private 'nest' are spectacular! In morning we would wake to the breathtaking views and sounds of the ocean from our four poster, very comfy bed. In the evening we would pour a glass of wine, turn on some music and watch the sun set directly in front of us!

We planned To rent a car mid week to travel the island but to tell you the truth, once we were there, we had no desire to leave!! We were able to walk down to Brewers Bay (15 min walk) which had a lovely beach but couldn't wait to get back to the villa for a swim in the infinity pool and to watch the sunset! I'm still smiling as I write this!!

Prior to our arrival I ordered all of our groceries, wine etc on line. The grocers deliver free of charge so when we arrived all we had to do was throw on our bathing suits and jump in the pool... SEAMLESS!!

My husband and I have traveled many places. This is our 5th year renting with VR.com and KERENSA is the only place we woukd return to! Thank you Ben.... We'll see you next year!!!
