Overview

About the property

Villa, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Perched on a hillside above a secluded Bay on Tortola’s North West coast and situated amongst large boulders and mature trees, is the uniquely idyllic retreat of “Kerensa” The house is built on a private 2 acre estate bordering Mount Healthy National Park. It was carefully designed to have minimal impact on the beautiful natural setting and take full advantage of the stunning panoramic views over the Islands and Bays of the North Shore. Far away from any other houses, most of the time, the only sounds you hear are the waves on the rocks far below....

By combining colourful Caribbean style with quirky antiques and flea market finds from Europe the owners have created an aesthetic, highly individual dwelling that delightfully complements the spectacular location. The house is simple, comfortable and well equipped with accommodation consisting of one bedroom, a bathroom, dining area and a kitchen / living room together with a covered veranda, a brick courtyard and wooden decks around an infinity edge pool and hot-tub area.

The bedroom has an elegant and very comfortable queen size bed with stylish antique furniture and polished wooden floors. There is also a very quiet A/C unit in the bedroom if you prefer to close the doors at night. Adjacent is a bathroom with a Turkish marble sink and a unique, private indoor/outdoor shower area. Fine quality towels and linens are provided.

The kitchen / main room is equipped with a professional Viking stove, stainless steel fridge with ice and water dispenser, coffee maker, blender, toaster and everything else you might need. There is also a quiet A/C unit to cool you down or you can simply open all the glass doors and let the breezes flow through. Outside the kitchen there's a modern Weber gas grill for Barbequing

The recently upgraded audio visual system includes high speed wifi, Bose 5:1 Surround sound, outdoor speakers, Samsung Smart TV and a powerful Sony receiver capable of connecting to many devices including guests own smartphones and tablets if you have your own music. Netflix and Spotify accounts are provided for streaming movies and music along with several other entertainment options. A local phone is available for your convenience with free local and US calls.

One of the loveliest features of Kerensa is the beautiful infinity edge pool. A sophisticated salt water chlorine generator system keeps the water crystal clear and gently sanitised without harsh chemicals. Lights in the pool can be controlled remotely from the house and depending on your mood, can be set to subtle fading colours, plain white (or even flashing disco!). There is also very private hot tub nestled among the boulders with a view across Shark Bay. Surrounded by fairy lights strung in the trees at night, the setting is truly magical.

Close by are the world class beaches of Brewers Bay (3 minutes by car) which features an uncrowded half mile of golden sand and superb snorkeling and Cane Garden Bay (10 minutes) with its’ famous beach and plethora of lively bars and restaurants. Just along the coast to the East are two stunning, white sand and very out of the way beaches - Trunk Bay and Rogues Bay, that you can often have just to yourself. Kerensa is centrally situated to explore the island. Roadtown (the capital) is 15 minutes over the hill on the South Shore.

Access from the public road is along a short unpaved track (a 4WD vehicle is advisable), once inside Kerensa' s remote-controlled electronic gate the driveway is fully paved. The parking area has been deliberately sited away from the house to preserve the natural ambience, with a series of steps (39 to be precise!) leading down to the house.

“Kerensa” is the Cornish word for love and if you’re looking for a unique and romantic retreat, "far from the madding crowd", look no further....

About Ben Bamford

Jessica is a native born Tortolan while Ben is originally from Cornwall in the UK. We live a few miles along the coast from Kerensa with our two young children. We also run The Last Resort, a well known restaurant and bar in Trellis Bay

Ben Bamford purchased this villa in 1998

Why Ben Bamford chose British Virgin Islands

We bought the land in 1998 because of the seclusion and the amazing views and then built the house a few years later. We originally planned to build several villas on the large plot but loved the fact that Kerensa was so private that we decided to keep it that way.

Unbelievable views, gorgeous property!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderful stay here, we wish we could have stayed longer! The day we arrived the owner was having some trouble with the water supply, and stayed late working until the problem was fixed. After that everything was perfect! The villa is very remote (don't expect to walk anywhere) and private. A short drive gets you to numerous beautiful beaches. I recommend renting a Jeep or other 4wd vehicle, as the roads are extremely steep and rough, especially if you go to Smuggler's Cove. We can't wait to go back to Tortola!

Beauty, Peace and Privacy!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I booked Kerensa 13 months ahead of time as we were contemplating celebrating 25 years of marriage. After 3 plane rides we arrived at Beef Island airport at 3:30pm on Sunday.

After renting our car we texted Ben and preplanned to meet him at the main Riteway Grocery in Roadtown after we shopped.

His lovely wife met us in the parking lot and we followed her far up into the hills of northwest Tortola where she left us with Ben and he brought us to Kerensa.

We are Americans and driving on the left side is certainly different. Some roads are windy, narrow and incredibly steep. And I'm not exaggerating. My husband however quite enjoyed the challenge. The driving may not be for those faint of heart.

Just driving behind a house to get to the dirt road leading to Kerensa was quite interesting. Once you get to the automatic gate the road is paved. Getting out of the driveway was a daily challenge for my husband and he improved every day.

If I can offer one word of very important advise: Rent a 4WD SUV! You will absolutely need it.

We rented a Hyundai Tucson at the airport. We thought it was a 4WD but when we got to Kerensa we realized that it was not. We traveled every crazy out of the way place and my husband managed with the car we had, but it would have been much easier with a 4WD.

Back to Kerensa: Ben showed us around the property for a few moments. It is one thing to see the pics, but quite another to see the lazy sun hovering over Jost Van Dyke at sunset. Quite a sight!

There are 2 buildings: 1 building is the kitchen/living room area. The other building is the bathroom and bedroom. In between is a covered breezeway with a large dining room table. Up on the hill amongst the trees, flowers and jungle is a practically new beautiful hot tub. We were the 2nd people to use it. And it was wonderful!

We ate breakfast every morning there and a few dinners. We closed the doors in the bedroom at night and used the AC. It is something to sit up in the bed in the morning and have the horizon of the ocean staring back at you. The bed was very comfortable.

Places to go that we liked: Journeys Massage in Roadtown, Botanical Gardens, Roadtown. Pussers on Marina Cay, hiking on Mt. Sage (try delicious banana smoothie at Mountain View). Take a ferry to Virgin Gorda and spend the day. Hit as many beaches on north end of Tortola. Our favorite was Long Bay Beach.

We loved our stay at Kerensa and the island of Tortola. Every person we met was friendly & helpful.

Peaceful, private, romantic, lovely... I could go on and on!

  • 5 of 5

We can't say enough about this wonderful property!! The privacy! It felt like home... not a rental property. We loved waking each day and having breakfast on the desk watching the morning sailboats. Tortola is great home base... we loved driving around and exploring (finally learned our way after a few days!) Great beaches and not crowded! (Smugglers Bay, Brewers, Cane Garden on a non cruise ship day) We took day trips to Virgin Gorda and to Jost Van Dyke which were an easy ferry ride. But what we loved the most was the quiet time in nature. Peace on earth! We only went out to dinner once and really enjoyed cooking at "home". The sound system is awesome, Wifi works when you need it- which isn't often, and the outdoor shower was awesome! Plus the hot tub! Like I said, I could go on and on. It's hard to go back to the same place twice since the world is so big... but this place changed our mind! Cheers!

Remarkable View

  • 5 of 5

By far this is the best place we have ever stayed at!! Get your groceries in town and fix your dinners at home. Because the view is the best you could ever see. Venture out during the day and have lunch but be back by 3 to play in the pool and fix dinner watching the sunset. I hope to be back one day but there is so much to explore in this world. But if we do this is our place to stay.

Dream come true

  • 5 of 5

Kerensa Villa is so much more than words or pictures can express. We spent a magical three days on our second honeymoon. We really enjoyed meeting Ben. He and his wife have put everything into this place to make you feel at home.

Let me put it this way, I cried when we left.
