Space 1,722 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6 overlooking the countryside and sea

'Marias' possesses the charm of a traditional Zakynthian stone-built house but with all modern amenities. It is set in one and half acres of mountain garden with stunning views of the Ionian Sea and the island of Kephalonia. It is an ideal place for those seeking peace and tranquillity.

The main house has an open- plan living/dining/kitchen. The fully equipped kitchen & dining area has a large farmhouse table with seating for up to 8. The sitting room has 2 comfortable sofas set around a fireplace. There is a wc/shower room on this level. Upstairs are 2 double bedrooms, one with its own balcony, 1 twin bedroom and a further WC/shower room. Downstairs a covered archway leads to a large terrace perfect for al fresco dining & watching the sun set over the sea to Cephalonia. Steps lead down to a sumptuous 14metre pool with large shaded pergola. downstairs studio room separate to the house, a large utility room with washing machine, garage.

A newly built Boule Court set in the garden to compliment the Table Tennis.

Zakynthos town which is approx 40 mins by car is a thriving busy town (charmingly chaotic!). It combines both Greek island architecture and venetian. It has local and (a few international) shops, restaurants, banks, hospital and museum. The port for mainland Greece which is 1 hour away by large ferry is situated adjacent to the town.

The town has an outside cinema and a good nightlife.

About Barbara Upchurch

I first visited the North of this beautiful island with my family in 1998 when we came to the Peligoni Sailing Club.

We had a fantastic time and returned the following year, something we don't normally do.

The unspoilt beauty, people and atmosphere compelled me to build a house in 2000 and we have never looked back.

Why Barbara Upchurch chose Greece

Maria's is built in traditional zakynthian style, it is charming but completely practical.

It has a wonderful feel to it, people find it hard to believe it is a relatively new build and are convinced it is renovated.

Sitting on the verandas looking down the valley to the sea and Cephalonia is amazing.

Very few villas in my opinion offer such a unique location and such tranquility yet within close proximity to the local amenities.

What makes this house unique

A stunning fully tiled 14m swimming pool which you may have to share on occaisons with swallows and other birds and a large shaded pergola parallel to it with seating and hammock.

Not far from the village and other places but sits quietly in one and a half acres.

Peace and quiet and beautiful views.

Huge night skies, no light pollution.

The grounds are enclosed, children can run free.

The prettiest part of the island, and Marias had a sensational view. One of the best villas I have stayed in, with lovely gardens and a fantastic pool. Barbara and Makis have created something that they really care about and it shows in the detail and design of the place. The villa was comfortable and well equipped - very spacious and clean. The beds were lovely and comfy and the views from the bedroom windows were out of this world. I would definitely return! Top marks.

Maria's Villa

  • 5 of 5

We could not have asked for a better villa, spacious, well equipped and quiet. Sitting at the back of the villa all you can see are the hills, the sea, and the sunset. The best part of the day was having an evening meal and watching the sunset in the sea; we actually ate in every night bar one because it was so stunning and peaceful. The almost infinity pool is situated at the side and back of the villa, it has a big area to sunbathe, relax, read and watch the swallows drink; swimming in the evening with the sun setting (as if it is next to you) is the best feeling! Before we came we were slightly concerned about having no air conditioning but because the walls are so thick it is always cool inside even after above 30 degree heat every day. You think you have discovered every nook and cranny but there is a secret path leading to a washing line and a walled amphitheatre behind a closed door!

The cliffs are so steep it takes just under 15 minutes to get down to the sea; however, it is the best cove on the whole island! It is called Porto Sellinas and hardly anyone goes. You can swim through crystal blue water with great snorkelling; there is also a cave to swim through with an overhang that you can jump from!

Thank you to Barbara and Makis for being very generous and helpful owners who gave great advice, we really enjoyed our holiday. Phoebe, 13.

Owner's Response: Dear Phoebe it was our pleasure to have you and your family stay at Maria's Villa. Only you and your adventurous family could have chosen the most difficult but most beautiful cove to swim at, the other easy little coves posed no challenge for you at all! Hoping we see you again sometime in the future.

Marias Villa - Paradise in Zakynthos

  • 5 of 5

Gorgeous setting, gorgeous house, gorgeous pool - what more could you want?

The house is very clean and comfortable, has everything you need to enjoy your holiday. A stunning freshwater pool that provides endelss entertainment with swallows dipping in for a drink, plus fabulous view over the valley with Kefalonia in the distance. Drive away to lovely village of Volimes where there's a couple of good tavernas and fresh bread daily.

Can't recommend enough and Barbara will ensure everything is there for you.

Great Romantic get away

  • 5 of 5

"This villa was fantastic. I would recommend this to everyone we had such a relaxing, peaceful honeymoon. We just wished we had booked two weeks. The villa was very clean and well equipped. The views are to die for. Barbara and Maki called by to check we where settled in but this was so in obtrusive and we knew they would be there to answer any queries we had. They invited us over for a few evenings and were made very welcome. Wish we were there!

The panorama view is amazing a 180 degree of the coast and out to sea as you eat on the terrace or sit by the pool. The Villa is spacious, well maintained and with good facilities. This is a fabulous villa, so light, airy and spacious with everything that you could want. The pool was a really good size and got the sun all day, with plenty of room for the loungers around the poolside.

The location of the villa was perfect for us as we just got married on the island. Don't take to many cloths YOU WILL NOT NEED THEM. There is no one around or over looking you.

Overall, The villa itself was very very nice indeed. It was kept very clean, and the grounds were stunning to say the least! One dip in the pool, and you'll understand what I mean, the view was picture postcard lovely!

We miss you both Barbara and Maki and cant wait to go back again.

Idyllic. We have have enjoyed two wonderful holidays at Marias. It has everything we desire for a peaceful holiday ; complete peace and quiet, privacy, stunning scenery, marvellous weather (including a lovely breeze which mellows the heat) a real swimming pool which is great for messing about in and proper swimming, and and a very well appointed comfortable spotless and beautiful villa. There are so many places to just sit and enjoy the peace. Our host Barbara has made us so welcome to her delightful hideaway, without being intrusive. In our opinion she has got it just right on all counts. She has provided us with a map marking the best beaches and shops. The visitors book is full of the most complementary messages which speaks for itself. We would go back tomorrow and would not hesitate to recommend Marias to all especially people and families seeking a really peaceful break.

On a practical note, you need a car if only to shop for food and making the trip to the sea.
